FRED CHAPMAN • CPR: Science, Traditions and Hunches • Shocking News! An update on the science of defibrillation Fred Chapman, Ph.D. joined Physio-Control Corporation (now Physio-Control Inc. and, until recently, a division of Medtronic) in 1993. As the Director of Research, a Medtronic Technical Fellow and a Bakken Fellow, Fred leads a group that focuses on the science and technology of emergency cardiac care. He received a Ph.D. degree in biomedical engineering in 1988, and master’s degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering in previous years, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. His undergraduate studies at Cornell University focused on mechanical engineering and biological sciences. Dr. Chapman’s research interests include various topics closely tied to emergency care, including transthoracic defibrillation, physiological monitoring, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, and detecting and improving care for acute myocardial infarctions. He is widely published and enjoys extensive collaboration with a number of thought leaders in increasing the understanding of resuscitation and management of cardiac arrhythmias. In his spare time, he is an avid skier, bicyclist, hiker, and enjoys exploring the mountains of the Pacific Northwest with his wife and son
