In the past few years, his work has broadened to include video for the web, making over 180 short videos for the Gates Foundation funded web-­‐portal Teaching Channel.org He has won dozens of national and international awards for his broadcast filmmaking work. He is a five time Emmy Award nominee and two time Emmy winner. (winners: Earth and the American Dream, HBO, 1992; Loyalty and Betrayal: A History of the American Mob, Fox, 1994; Nominees: Soldiers of Conscience, PBS, 2007; Heiress and Her Chateau, PBS 2014 with 2 nominations.) Gary also edited two documentaries that were nominated for Academy Awards (Memorial 1989, NBC; Superchief: The Life and Legacy of Earl Warren, 1991, PBS) and received a Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film festival, for outstanding achievement in editing (Earth and the American Dream.) The Director's Guild of America nominated Gary as Outstanding Documentary Director for The Double Life of Ernesto Gómez Gómez, PBS, 1999; a documentary that in addition to receiving critical acclaim also had the very real effect of significantly contributing to the Presidential Pardon and release of Ernesto’s mother and 11 other political prisoners within a few months of its premiere broadcast. Gary’s national primetime network television credits include producing and directing three primetime documentary specials (The Story of Mothers and Daughters, ABC; The Story of Fathers and Sons ABC; Teens Get Real WB Network), and directing/editing 2 hours of a documentary mini-­‐series for Fox (Loyalty and Betrayal: A History of the American Mob). As a principle at Luna Productions, he produced a series of documentaries for non-­‐profit organizations that have helped to raise over $12.7 million for worthy causes. He often works for and collaborates with other documentary filmmakers, editing and acting as a consulting producer on A Fierce Green Fire (PBS 2012) and Have You Heard From Johannesburg (Emmy Award winner -­‐ best documentary series of the year, 2012) Notable other films include co-­‐editing Ballets Russes (the 49th most financial successful documentary of all time, as of the year after its release), edit doctor on And the Band Plays On (Emmy award winning HBO fiction film) and co-­‐editing Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam (multiple Emmy award winning HBO program.) He lives in Berkeley with Catherine Ryan, his wife, business partner and frequent co-­‐producer/director. He is a published writer, a former radio DJ, a passionate amateur pianist, and fluent in Spanish after 3 margaritas.
