HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS Thursday, March 19, 2015 8:00 to 10:00 AM Room 252A Creating Video Content for Your Flipped Classroom Dan Spencer, Educational Technology Consultant, Jackson County ISD Experts publish and teachers are the content experts of their classrooms. Whether using your cell phone camera or screencasting from your computer, see how you can create video content your students can access any time and from any device. Come ready to make a video you can use right away in your flipped classroom, while also learning tips and tricks for easily creating video content in the future. Also learn about the equipment and management considerations you will need to plan for to use video in your classroom successfully. Note: Having a YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive, or Dropbox account will be helpful. Room 252B Utilizing Technology to Prepare for Next Generation Assessments Jennifer Arnswald and Kent Steinman, Educational Technology Consultants, Kent County ISD Next generation assessments are coming. What are you doing differently to prepare students for these online assessments? In this hands-on session, you will learn how to use technology tools to create online assessments that incorporate 21st century skills related to Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. Room 258 Getting More Out of Google Forms With Scripts and Add-Ons Anthony Buza, Technology Transformation Grant Facilitator, Genessee ISD In this session, participants who have experience with Google Forms will explore various ways to get more out of forms. This session will explore various efficiency tips and tricks as well as scripts that can be installed to improve workflow. Note: A Google account is required to create Forms. Participants are encouraged to create an account before attending this session. This session is intended for intermediate to advanced users. 2 Room 259 Creating Digital Books With iBooks Author Dave Tchozewski, Director of Information Technology, Jenison Public Schools iBooks Author is a free app from Apple that allows you to create interactive books for an iPad and now your Mac!. Using the built-in templates, you can easily drag and drop text, graphics, movies, and other content you have already created to build an interactive experience for the user. Join this session to learn the basics of iBook Author and build you first iBook. Note: This is Mac-only software and books created can only be read on an iPad or Mac. 1:00 to 3:00 PM Room 252A Introduction to Programming With Scratch Victor Horman, Professor, Calvin College The Scratch programming environment has long been recognized as an effective first tool to learn computer programming. The environment is so easy to use that students as young as second grade can learn to program with Scratch. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to Scratch and will learn how to build their own simple interactive games, computer art, and physics demonstrations, appropriate for use 4-12 classrooms. Note: No previous knowledge of computer programming is required. Room 258 Build Student-Drive e-Portfolios With Good Sites and Drive Lori Banaszak, Technology Integration Specialist, and Sharon Crain, Media Specialist, Clarkston Community Schools This hands-on workshop will demonstrate a process to help students build and collect electronic evidence for their e-portfolios so they can display work year after year. By creating e-portfolios students can create a digital profile, become digital leaders, and create a positive digital voice online. 3 Room 259 The Magic of iMovie Michael Rio, Teacher, Harper Creek Community Schools Imagine the enthusiasm your students will have for writing and collaborating when their projects can be turned into movies, animations, digital stories, documentaries, news segments, or amazing slideshows! Use these same movie projects to assess student learning. This two-hour hands-on session will cover the skills you need to effectively use iMovie with your students. Feel free to bring your own mouse and headphones to this fun and inspiring session. 3:30 to 5:30 PM Room 252A Blending Learning With Schoology John Breen and Natalie Karl, Teachers, Divine Child High School In this workshop, we will demonstrate how we used Schoology to support blended learning in our classrooms. After demonstrating how this free online platform enables teachers to give students extra practice, quick feedback, and multiple ways to access course materials, we will work with participants to create their own Schoology sites. Room 252B Screencasting for All Craig Steenstra, Educational Technology Consultant, Kent ISD In this workshop, participants will learn how to create screen-recording videos from their PCs (or learn how to do it better). These videos could be used by teachers or administrators to communicate or teach others about pretty much any topic. They could also be used by students to show learning or produce media for projects. We will go over tips and tools for efficiency and quality, and we will create various examples while exploring options for storing and saving our creations. Room 258 Chromebook Crazy: Add-Ons, Apps, and Extensions Anne Truger and Mary Milnar-Stephens, Directors of Ed Tech Innovation, Waukegan Public Schools District 60 (IL) New to Chromebooks? A seasoned Chromebook user? No matter what your level of experience is you will learn something new. Friday, March 20, 2015_________________________________________________________ 8:00 to 10:00 AM Room 252A The Future Is in the Hands of Your Students: 3D Printing in the Classroom Steve Dickie, Director of Instructional Technology, Divine Child High School This workshop is for teachers who want to bring the excitement and opportunities afforded by 3D printers into their classrooms. No previous experience in 3D modelling is needed. Participants will learn about and work with several free tools for creating and modifying 3D models while exploring project ideas covering concepts in science, math, design, programming, and entrepreneurship. Room 252B Coding in the Classroom Cheryl Lykowski, Teacher, Bedford Public Schools and Patti Harju, Teacher, St. Stephen School There are many great free resources available to teach coding in the elementary classroom. Coding requires students to think creatively, problem solve, collaborate, communicate, make predictions, persevere, and have fun doing it. Teaching students to code opens up a world of possibilities. We will share many coding resources including Code.org, Scratch, Tynker, Code Monkey, and iPad Apps Kodable, Cargo-Bot and Hopscotch. Learn how during this hands-on, practical session featuring Google Classroom, Google Drive Add-ons, scripts, and more. You Don't Need It! Andy Losik, Digital Learning Coordinator, Hamilton County Schools The antidote to torturous presentations lies in Apple's Keynote. Now free and online to anyone with a web browser, Keynote can make presentation slides, but excels when you let your creativity run wild. It is the ultimate app smasher because what you build in Keynote can enhance just about any creative project. Build infographics, animate, create high-end layered videos, and blow stuff up in this, "Hey, howdya do that?” kind of session. 6 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM Room 252A Creating a Makerspace Michael Medvinsky, Teacher, Bloomfield Hills, Schools You don’t need a hi-tech Makerspace to invent, tinker, design, play, and share. We will explore how to create an innovative thinking space with a Makey-Makey and Scratch, copper tape, playdoh, paper clips, conductive paint, different types of conductive materials, batteries and LEDs, and your imagination. This hands-on lab will be a playground for makers to play and share their inventions with one another. Let's be inventors, makers, tinkerers, musicians. Together. Room 252B Adventures With MIT App Inventor 2 - Make Android Apps Greg Marten, Educational Technology Consultant, Lenawee ISD This session will guide individuals through learning the basics of free, web-based App Inventor 2 software, which allows people to use blocks-based programming to create and share apps that run on Android devices. Attendees must have Google accounts for this session; they’ll use laptops to create and edit apps. Also, participants should bring an Android device with MIT AI2 Companion App already installed in it for live testing of newly crafted apps. Room 258 Digital Formative Assessment Tools Jennifer Bond, Teacher, Walled Lake Consolidated Schools Are you looking for ways to check the understanding of your students during your lessons? There are many digital tools that you can use in fun and easy ways that document where your students are with their learning. Engage in the fun of formative assessments and learn about Edmodo Snapshot, Plickers, Kahoot, and more.Bring your content to this session and spend time creating engaging assessments for your students. Room 259 Engage English Language and Struggling Learners Through Technology Cheryl Prindle, Teacher, Kentwood Public Schools English language and other struggling learners are part of the digital native generation. Their interest in and aptitude for technology can be focused to increase their skill acquisition. Visual engagement can help bridge the spectrum of educational backgrounds, cultural differences, heritage languages, and levels within a classroom. Use the web to augment comprehensible input in English and other content areas. Join in this session as we explore the use of free webbased tools for educational interaction and achievement. 7
