1936 (June to October) Francis Chichester epic Australia to England flight in a light aircraft
(DH80 Puss Moth), tall cover with stamps applied and cancelled in Australia, Ned. Indies,
Straits Settlements 5c brown (Singapore), Siam, Indo-Chine (Laos), Hong Kong, China (2,
Shanghai & Peiping), India (Simla), Persia, Iraq, Egypt & finally atdestination G.B.(London).
Hint of ageing but fine. Interesting to note that the only backstamp on the cover is a Singapore
G.P.O. with a different time code to the ‘K’ type cancelling the stamp which suggests that
Singapore was the only G.P.O. which didn’t just chop the stamps but made him pay local 5c
rate and then delivered his mail to him! Manuscript “Guaranteed flown Francis Chichester,
pilot No.64” but despite cover number quoted this is a rarely seen item. Pilot signed by the man
who was famously knighted by the Queen on landfall after his much later Round the World
Solo yacht voyage. A remarkable pioneer air mail item. Australian Air Mail Cat #612 A$600.
