Police blame mob for biker’s
death, arrest 4 for attacking cops
By Our Staff Reporter
Police are likely to initiate
action against the 10 individuals found responsible for attacking two traffic policemen
after a young man died in K.K.
Nagar on May 9.
A magisterial inquiry is underway into the incident in
which the traffic policemen
were blamed for the death of
19-year-old Selvam who
rammed his scooter into a road
median after policemen tried
to stop him from speeding
away. His two friends escaped
with minor injuries.
Onlookers who witnessed
the incident thrashed traffic
inspector Sargunam and constable Sivanandam leaving
them injured. From footages
from nearby security cameras
and videos captured and uploaded by witnesses onto social networking sites, police
have identified ten persons
involved in the attack on the
policemen.
K. K. Nagar Police said that
had the mob not turned violent and let the policemen do
their duty, Selvam could have
been taken to a hospital in
time and saved.
K.K. Nagar police arrested
four of the attackers on May
14. The police have named K
Bhaskar, 44, a film director,
and Ashok Kumar, 30, an auto
driver and realtor, as the
prime accused based on video
footage. The injured policemen are undergoing treatment at Government Royapettah Hospital and have been
placed in the ‘vacancy reserve’.

Chain snatching incidents in West Mambalam
Sir, I would like to bring to the attention of the readers a spate of
chain snatchings which took place on the mornings of May 9 and May
10 in West Mambalam. I was staying at my parents’ house on
Subramanian Street. At around 5.15 a.m I heard a loud scream. I ran
outside and found that a man had snatched the chain from an elderly
lady who lives in our building. The incident happened when a man
accosted the lady who was entering the flat after buying milk. In the
pretext of asking her an address, he followed her into the flat and
pulled at her five-sovereign mangalsutra. Even though she tried to
hold on to her chain and shouted loudly, the guy still managed to pry
off her chain. He immediately ran out of the flat and got into a waiting
auto and sped away. We later came to know from our milk vendor that
similar incidents had taken place with two more women the previous
morning on Jubilee Road. However I am not aware if any police
complaint was lodged in any of the above mentioned cases. I appeal
to women in the neighbourhood to be careful and not to wear any
jewellery when they venture out on early morning household errands. – Balaji, Subramaniam Street, West Mambalam, Ph:

Power connection given to building flouting norms
Sir, Electricity connection was denied to a building just opposite
the T. Nagar MLA’s office (Usman Road, T. Nagar) as completion
certificate was not issued to it by CMDA for violating various
construction norms. It had earlier housed Sri Sankarapandian
Stores. Hence, the store was lit up with the help of gensets. As there
was no business activity throughout, it wore a deserted a look. As per
the CMDA’s website, this building is listed under the Violation
category. For the past few weeks, extensive interior and exterior
work has been taken up to spruce up the building. This indicates that
it will soon become operational. The building owners have probably
managed to get power connection by taking refuge under the Section
113C of Tamilnadu Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, which has
become a blessing in disguise for the building owners to knowingly
violate the rules, thereby overlooking the mandatory requirement of
obtaining completion certificate. It is not known how a building
under violation can take up renovation/rectification work, thereby
violating the norms again and again. Complaints made by the
Association to CMDA have had no effect. – T. Nagar Residents’
Welfare Association, 30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar
Remove encroachments before starting ‘Project Skywalk’
Sir, This refers to the proposal of the Chennai Corporation to build
a skywalk between Mambalam Railway Station and T. Nagar Bus
Terminus to facilitate hassle-free movement of the public, at a cost
of Rs. 20 crores. At present, the pedestrians are forced to wade
through the ever-busy Ranganathan Street and Natesan Street/
Railway Border Road. What one could infer from the above proposal
is that the Corporation does not want to remove the encroachments
from Ranganathan Street, Natesan Street and Railway Border Road.
Is it an uphill task to remove the encroachments? Will not the
inaction encourage proliferation? While the construction of the skywalk is welcome to provide immediate relief to the pedestrians, the
Corporation should remove all the encroachments from the above
mentioned roads. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

AmmaV
Unlike the old British monarchs who serially numbered
themselves Henry I, Ii, III etc, the democrats of TN
fortunately did not call our ruler Amma I or Amma II. But
Jaya takes the cake for the longest occupation of the CM’s
throne, which Paneerselvam felt is out of bounds for him in
her absence caused by judicial diktats.
So, until any interloper makes a bid for the throne,
‘Amma V’ is the serial number at present, thanks to Justice
C. P. Kumaraswamy of Karnataka High Court, who felt
that her tenure of the throne is beyond judicial interference.
Let us have more of her on the hot seat as she is cool with
sitting on it for 18 years in all, fending off covetous eyes and
grabby hands.
The fact that there had always been a retinue of allied
grabbers masquerading as her makkal benefactors is a
historic truism that has kept pace with her stardom of the
shadowy world of make-believe where she reigned supreme. She could do no wrong as a law maker or on the silver
screen, and a fabled success formula hit the bull’s eye every
time.
Jaya stands apart not because she desires it, but those
less endowed feel that nature demands a step back as the
ordained natural stance. Consequently, Jaya is pushed a
step ahead to lead and she can’t help winning! Would you
wonder at a fish having expertise in swimming? It can’t but
swim!
You can’t bet on what a court verdict would be; that is one
plank that is abstemiously left alone by punters. I am not
surprised at the learned judge saying “Appeals allowed” and
walking out, leaving the world to brightness and joy and
Jaya to her worshipping millions.
Her political enemies wanted her locked up in jail for the
rest of her life but, arithmatically, her millions of followers
appeared through Justice Kumaraswamy to chuck the
cock and bull story into the rubbish bin where it rusts in
pieces.
Even cinema fiction should be supportive of facts. Cinema producers and directors will do well to send such stories
to Nepal to bury it miles deep in the fissures. Fiction-free
courts should be Jaya’s new promise to Tamil Nadu when
she returns yet again to Fort St. George.
