SPRING AT LAST! We are all looking forward to the warmer weather where we can finally shed those layers of clothes and enjoy all of the activities that the warmer weather offers. While we are enjoying this season we have to take steps to prevent bites from ticks that share the outdoors. Ticks can infect humans with bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause serious illness. There are several other tick borne diseases in addition to Lyme disease that you can get from a tick bite such as Anaplasmosis, Babesiosis, Ehrlichosis, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia. Ticks live in moist and humid environments, particularly in or near wooded or grassy areas. You may come in contact with ticks during outdoor activities around your home or when walking through leaf litter or nearby shrubs. Always walk in the center of trails in order to avoid contact with ticks. Products containing Permethrin kill ticks. Permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing and camping gear and remains protective through several washings. Use a repellent with DEET on the skin. Repellents containing 20% or more DEET can protect up to several hours. Always follow product instructions. Ticks may be carried into the house on clothing. Check your clothing for ticks. Any that are found should be removed. Placing clothes into a dryer on high heat for at least a half an hour effectively kills ticks. Showering within two hours of coming indoors has been known to reduce your risk of getting Lyme disease. It also may help wash off unattached ticks, and it is an opportunity to do a tick check. Conduct a full body check on return from the outdoors. Use a hand-held or full length mirror to view all parts of your body, including under the arms, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, back of the knees, in and around the hair, between the legs and around the waist. Remove an attached tick as soon as you notice it by grasping with tweezers, as close to the skin as possible. and pulling it straight out. Clean the area with soap and water. Watch for signs such as rash or fever in the days and weeks following the bite and see a health care provider if these develop. Your risk of acquiring a tick-borne disease depends on many factors, including where you live, what type of tick bit you and how long the tick was attached. If you become ill after a tick bite, see a health care provider. HEARING TESTS — Thursday, April 9, 1:30 — 3:30 pm by appointment. Emergency Preparedness EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS - The Mashpee Council on Aging maintains a list of seniors who are homebound, and/or frail to help the town provide assistance to them during a civil defense emergency such as hurricane or blizzard. If you would like to be on the list, please call the Senior Center at (508) 539-1440 and request a simple registration form for you to complete and return. Should you need assistance completing the form, please call Outreach Coordinator, Darlene Perkins. DISABILITY INDICATOR FORM - Are you a disabled elder? Disabilities would include life support system, mobility impaired, blind, deaf and hard of hearing, teletypewriter, speech impaired, cognitive impairment, etc. If you have any of the listed disabilities, Clay Nicholson, Mashpee’s 911 Municipal Coordinator, recommends that a 9-1-1 DISABILITY INDICATOR FORM be completed and forwarded to him so that if an emergency occurs, public safety officials will be alerted that an individual residing at your address communicates over the phone via TTY and/or has a disability that may hinder evacuation or transport. This information is confidential and will only appear at the dispatcher’s location when a 911 call originates from your address. Please contact Clay Nicholson, (508) 539-1400 ext. 8499 with any questions and to pick up a form. You can also pick up this form at the Mashpee Senior Center. Select a “resident” button on the left and enter your contact information here so local leadership may contact you with timely, important messages. THE FILE OF LIFE & THE PET FILE OF LIFE The “File of Life®” is a miniature medical history file that is posted on the outside of your refrigerator, and a smaller version which is placed either in your wallet or the glove compartment of your vehicle. In the event of an emergency, E.M.T’s, Firefighters and Police Officers who are dispatched to your home or vehicle will know where to find it. For any questions, please contact Darlene Perkins. The “Pet File of Life” is similar to your own “File of Life”, but for your pet. It will contain such information as: diet, emergency contact, veterinarian, health concerns.
