Walk-in: Walk-ins may be accommodated but there may not be program materials available and the credit certificate will be mailed by UMASS Medical School Credits/Contact Hours: Application has been made for credits to IMIA and CCHI Education Level: Intermediate to Advance Description: This 3 hour workshop focuses on overcoming the challenges medical interpreters may face when providing interpretation during a genetic counseling session. Participants will become familiar with the three branches of genetic counseling, (pediatric, cancer, and prenatal) and gain a working understanding of the principles behind each type of session. This working knowledge will help navigate interpreting complex scientific information that is common in genetic counseling sessions. Furthermore, attention will be given to areas of cultural difference, such as the aspect of patient-choice in healthcare, as well as socio-economic difference, such as sub-optimal insurance coverage. Participants will engage in group activities and role playing exercises in order to apply information learned. Identify unique aspects of genetic counseling Recognize the construction of a three-generation medical pedigree Identify the principles behind prenatal genetic counseling Describe how to navigate the challenges posed by the introduction of patient choice Recognize the principles behind cancer genetic counseling Summarize how to apply this knowledge to in-session group exercises and working as a medical interpreter Accreditation/Approval Information: Application has been made for credits to IMIA and CCHI CEU fee: $20.00 Certificates & Completion Requirements: Participants are expected to sign-in and out, attend the entire program, and complete an evaluation. Certificates will be distributed to participants at the end of the program. Participants will not receive a certificate of completion until payment has been received. If the certificate cannot be presented at the event, the participant will be mailed the certificate.
