Your guide to the
best ice cream at
the Jersey Shore

I am notorious among my friends for
going out for ice cream in completely
inappropriate weather. For example, I
walked to Dairy Queen in the snow a few
months ago just to get my ice cream fix.
Some would call that ridiculous, but I say
sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve
got to do if you have a craving for ice
cream.
You might imagine that, as an avid ice
cream enthusiast, I am very happy for it
to be the summer season now as I can
enjoy cold, creamy ice cream in the hot
weather — and you would be correct.
My ice cream habit has brought me to
several of the Shore’s best ice cream
shops, but the ones I’ve frequented are
only the tip of the iceberg.
Let this list be your guide to the array
of top-notch ice cream shops in the local
area, and have a delicious summer!
Hoffman’s Ice Cream & Yogurt is one
of the best and most popular ice cream
parlors at the Jersey Shore. All of their
good-to-the-last-bite ice cream is made in
house using only the best ingredients
available. Hoffman’s also boasts the
“Octopus Challenge” — those bold
enough, and hungry enough, who finish a
massive ice cream concoction consisting
of eight scoops and eight toppings in
eight minutes receives a t-shirt and
eternal glory.
There are a total of four Hoffman’s
locations: 800 Richmond Ave., Point
Pleasant Beach; 569 Church Street,
Spring Lake Heights; 78 Oceanport Ave.,
Little Silver; and its newest location can
be found at 444 Ocean Boulevard North
in Long Branch.
Sundae Times Ice Cream Shop in
Spring Lake is another local favorite.
Sundae Times is an old-fashioned ice
cream parlor located at 17 Atlantic Ave. in
scenic Spring Lake. The shop is just a
stone’s throw from the Spring Lake boardwalk and is a great place to grab some ice
cream before enjoying a nice stroll on the
oceanfront. As you might have guessed,
you definitely have to try the hot fudge
sundae at Sundae Times.
In nearby Manasquan, The Main
Scoop, located at 140 Main Street, offers
a great rotating list of flavors. This ice
cream hot spot offers fresh toppings and
deals out generously-sized portions. The
friendly staff will keep you coming back
for more delicious scoops time and again.
Sundaes The Ice Cream Place is another great family-owned ice cream parlor
that focuses heavily on serving up the
highest quality ice cream at a reasonable
price. The friendly and old-fashioned
service provides a great hometown feel.
The four Sundaes locations include 3217
Route 88 in Point Pleasant, 32 Atlantic
City Boulevard in South Toms River, 2211
Highway 35 in Manasquan, and 1059
Highway 34 in Aberdeen.
OMG! Yogurt is a popular frozen
yogurt store that offers customers the
chance to serve themselves. They offer
14 different flavors, some of which rotate,
and over 50 toppings from which to
choose. After you have created your
modestly-sized froyo treat — or an
enormous dish including multiple flavors
and toppings — you pay by the weight
of your cup, similar to that of self-serve
candy stores. OMG! Yogurt is located at
2153 Highway 35 in Sea Girt.
Kohr’s Frozen Custard Inc. is a
timeless Jersey Shore ice cream and
frozen treat parlor that dates back to the
mid 20th century. Serving hand-dipped
custard, soft serve, and Italian ice, Kohr’s
is great place to enjoy some variety in
your frozen treats. There are five local
Kohr’s Frozen Custard locations: Kohr’s at
Dupont at 14 West Boardwalk in Seaside
Heights; Kohr’s at Porter at 1922
Promenade in Seaside Park; Kohr’s at
Farragut at 1818 Boardwalk in Seaside
Park; Kohr’s at Stockton at 1800
Boardwalk in Seaside Park; and Kohr’s at
Point at 409 Boardwalk in Point Pleasant
Beach.
Another famous Jersey Shore
destination steeped in charm and
nostalgia, Jenkinson’s Boardwalk
Amusements on the Point Pleasant
Beach boardwalk boasts an excellent ice
cream parlor of its own. Jenkinson’s Ice
Cream & Sweet Shop is the perfect place
to indulge your sweet tooth after a long
day at the beach or arcade. Offering
tempting treats from ice cream to toffee,
chocolate, candy apples and more, the
Sweet Shop is located at 300 Ocean
Ave., Point Pleasant Beach.
Rita’s Italian Ice, also known as Rita’s
Water Ice, is yet another famous haunt at
which to enjoy delicious frozen treats.
Rita’s operates several stores throughout
Monmouth and Ocean counties, and
many more across the country as well.
Some of the local locations include
Jackson, Freehold, Eatontown,
Woodbridge and Manalapan. If you
haven’t had Rita’s, you have to first try
the Italian ice, but you also need to order
the misto, which is a blend of Italian ice
and frozen custard and has a consistency
similar to that of a milkshake. They come
in an assortment of flavors and are
perfect for enjoying on the go.
Ice Cream on 9 is located at 2300
Route 9 in Howell. Ice Cream on 9 has
been family owned and operated since
its opening in 1999. All of its ice cream,
Italian ice, cakes, and other treats are
made on premises — perhaps even
more impressively, Ice Cream on 9

boasts a whopping line of over 150
flavors of ice cream.
Being a seashore community, it comes
as no surprise that Lavallette boasts a
few prime ice cream shops. Iceberg Ice
Cream, located at 403 Grand Central Ave.,
has been serving up cold treats since
1977. The ice cream is made daily on
premises and is created with only the
freshest ingredients. Iceberg offers a
selection of over 24 homemade hard ice
creams and over 24 flavors of soft serve.
They offer fat-free soft yogurt as well as
two sugar-free flavors that rotate,
according to availability
Also located in Lavallette, The Music
Man Singing Ice Cream Shoppe is
perhaps one of the most unique ice
cream parlors at the Jersey Shore. The
Music Man offers an old-fashioned experience with a unique twist. Customers are
treated with lively vocal performances by
the staff during each seating that is
reminiscent of the vaudeville style of
entertainment. Even the menu is written
in the form of a song. The Music Man
Singing Ice Cream Shoppe is located at
2305 Grand Central Ave. Visit

Shivers Ice Cream is yet another
family owned and operated ice cream
parlor, and has been so for over 30 years.
Located at 4037 Route 9 in Howell,
Shivers Ice Cream is dedicated to serving
the community nothing but the best in
homemade ice cream.
Nancie’s Ice Cream & Cafe is located
at 84 1st Ave. in Atlantic Highlands.
Nancie’s offers a satisfying selection of
cool, creamy, and delicious flavors. This
quaint little place offers a great selection
of flavors and provides a perfect place for
families to get some ice cream while in
town.
While not an oceanfront community,
Toms River does not fall short in the ice
cream department. Yellow Brick Road Ice
Cream Carousel, located at 1857 Hooper
Ave., offers a nostalgic, step-back-in-time
ice cream parlor with a vibe similar to
that of a carnival. Yellow Brick Road Ice
Cream Carousel offers a friendly
experience for families and some of the
best ice cream and ice cream cakes
around. Be sure to check it out for the
next birthday you’re celebrating.
Strollos Italian Ice, located at 500
Main Street in Belmar, is another highly
popular ice cream spot. With tables
outside and two serving windows, you’ll
likely have to wait on line on a hot
summer night, but it is well worth it. The
thick, creamy ice cream is like no other,
while the smooth Italian ice lies
somewhere between ice cream, snow
cone, and gelato. It is independent from
the Strollo’s Lighthouse Italian Ice stands
in Long Branch, Point Pleasant Beach and
Red Bank.
Strollo’s Lighthouse Italian Ice is also a
Jersey Shore favorite and also sees long
lines on warm summer nights at all of its
locations. Ice cream and Italian ice
enthusiasts have been frequenting the
Lighthouse for years to gobble up its topnotch products.
Mrs. Walker’s Homemade Ice Cream
is located at 132 South Main Street in
Forked River. Since 1986, Mrs. Walker’s
has been providing quality, homemade
ice cream to hungry locals. With over 50
flavors and countless sundae variations,
Mrs. Walker’s is a great spot to enjoy
delicious frozen treats masterfully
crafted. If you don’t see something on
the menu, or you want to create your
own sundae, simply ask and the great
staff will try to accommodate you to the
best of their ability.
The Cone Zone has been serving up
some delicious, fresh, daily made ice
cream since 1993 using only the finest ingredients to be found. The Cone Zone is
located at 2040 State Route 33 in
Neptune.
Just a stone’s throw away in Neptune
City, The Ice Cream Shoppe is located at
96-98 Route 35. The Ice Cream Shoppe
offers a good selection of flavors and
friendly service. Everything they serve,
from hard ice cream to milkshakes to ice
cream cakes, is delicious and makes for a
great place to grab a treat on the go or
enjoy in the store. The ice cream at The
Ice Cream Shoppe is entirely homemade
using the best and freshest ingredients.
In Belmar, Niki Maccanico’s
Homemade Ice Cream, located at 1301
Main Street, offers some delicious
selections of homemade ice cream
scooped by friendly and efficient service.
Boasting a nice balance of classic and
innovative flavors, the soft serve ice
cream at Niki Maccanico’s is particularly
delicious.
Ocean Grove is one of the most
historic Shore communities, so it’s no
surprise that one of its two ice cream
parlors — Day’s Ice Cream — has been
serving sweet treats for nearly 140 years.
This is one of the area’s most beloved ice
cream parlors, and since 2012, residents
of Asbury Park have been enjoying the
same delicious ice cream at Day’s
second location, Just Another Day’s,
located at the First Avenue Pavillion on
the Asbury Park boardwalk. The original
Day’s is located at 48 Pitman Ave., Ocean
Grove.
Nagle’s Apothecary Cafe is another
Ocean Grove gem with an army of
loyalists. This cafe serves up a mean
breakfast, but is also the host of a
delicious ice cream parlor. I tend to
frequent Nagle’s for breakfast, and I can
hardly ever resist the temptation to get a
malt shake after breakfast. I highly
recommend going for a shake, as they’re
a personal favorite of mine, but their
homemade ice cream is also fantastic.
Ryan’s Homemade Ice Cream offers a
variety of delicious ice cream flavors. This
local gem stands out as one of the best
for traditional and more uncommon
flavors. Ryan’s Homemade Ice Cream is
located at 462 Shrewsbury Ave.,
Shrewsbury.
Looking for amazing ice cream and
frozen yogurt in Rumson? Look no further
than Crazees. Crazees is located at 2
West River Road and is one of the area’s
best ice cream parlors. You know humans
are not the only ones who enjoy ice
cream, so feel free to bring your canine
pal along to Crazees, as it is dog friendly.
With plenty of seating outside, both twoand four-legged creatures will have a
blast at Crazees.
Carvel Ice Cream is one of the premier
ice cream businesses in the Jersey Shore
area. Many of the ice cream parlors we
know and love today, including some on
this list, started as Carvel Ice Cream
stores. Carvel specializes in serving up
some of the most delicious and soughtafter cakes, novelties, and soft serve ice
cream in the business. They pride
themselves on being a family-friendly
business that is dedicated to making any
special occasion the best day possible.
There are three notable Carvel
locations at the Jersey Shore. The West
Long Branch store is located at 175
Monmouth Road; the Little Silver store is
located at 523 Prospect Ave.; and the
Brick store is located at 371 Brick
Boulevard.
In the beloved “City by the Sea,”
Asbury Park, sits Cookman Creamery.
Located at 711 Cookman Ave., Cookman
Creamery thrives on serving up delicious,
homemade ice cream. Cookman
Creamery offers a variety of options like
splits, sundaes and milkshakes, and they
also specialize in serving up take-home
treats like cakes and other novelties.
Cookman Creamery also offers alternative
options like vegan, kosher, gluten- and fatfree ice cream, making it among one of
the most accessible ice cream parlors I
have ever encountered.
Another Shore gem to check out this
summer is Gracie and the Dudes Organic
Ice Cream, located at 1062 Ocean Ave.,
Sea Bright. Gracie and the Dudes has
been serving up delicious, organic ice
cream treats since 2009. Gracie and the
Dudes is the only organic ice cream store
in Monmouth County and prides itself on
serving up tasty treats that are kind to
both the body and soul.
Summer Sweets Ice Cream and
Sweet Shoppe is located at 3071 Route
35 in Ocean Beach/Lavallette. With over
42 flavors to choose from and candy
galore, Summer Sweets is certainly a
great place at which to indulge your
sweet tooth.
Farley’s Ice Cream, located in the
Bennetts Mills Plaza in Jackson, offers a
selection of delicious homemade flavors
and is one of the most popular places to
purchase a birthday cake in Jackson. The
staff is always friendly, and options like
the pumpkin ice cream keep people coming back for more.
Finally, what ice cream list would be
complete without mentioning Dairy
Queen? The chain of soft serve and fast
food restaurants is well-known across
the country. The iconic menu item the
Blizzard is a thick milkshake/ice cream
hybrid. Be sure to watch as they serve
your Blizzard upside down!
Dairy Queen locations can be found
all over the state, but locally, stores can

Brannagan was all smiles when it
came to the bar this year.
“We’re very happy, and very
fortunate, to have had a wonderful

the last couple years have brought us
some unfortunate, cold and nasty
weather,” he said. “We are very lucky
to have had an excellent start to the
summer.”
Now that the summer has
unofficially begun, Brannagan expects
to see huge weekend crowds once kids
are home from school. Right now, it’s
like the calm before the storm.
“Once the middle of June hits, we
start to see larger and larger crowds.
Then, by the time the Fourth of July
rolls around, we are probably at our
busiest for non-holiday weekends for
about the next six to eight weeks,” says
Brannagan.
Martell’s is busy getting ready for
that busy period by sprucing everything
up.
“Another cool thing we did to help
spice up the interior is to put some new
stained wood paneling along the bars,
just to freshen things up a little bit,”
Brannagan said — and, luckily for
Martell’s, none of the interior work is
the result of Hurricane Sandy’s
devastating blow in 2012.
“Fortunately, our interior was able to
come out relatively unscathed after
Hurricane Sandy,” he said. “There was
no major damage inside, and we have
been lucky enough to make these
changes and renovations on our own
terms, instead of being defined by the
damaging effects of the storm.”
Another change made this year to
the bar is the sushi bar. Martell’s has
always had one, but it has been a
station located at one of the bars
inside.
“We built a brand new sushi bar to
give it its own appeal, separate from
that of the other bars,” Brannagan said.
“Like many of the other changes we
have made, the newly relocated sushi
bar has done very well for us thus far.
We’ve done sushi for years, but now
that it’s out in the open, people are able
to see it and it pops a little now that it
is separate from the bar.”
At the bar, frozen drinks rule.
“By far the most popular drinks are
our frozen drinks,” Brannagan said.
“Pina coladas, strawberry daiquiris, and
those sorts of things are really popular
with the beach crowds for obvious
reasons. We also make a multitude of
fresh OJ drinks. We squeeze a ton of
orange juice. I don’t see anyone
squeezing more fresh juice than me,
but I know someone does, and I
squeeze a lot.”
The Tiki Tea is another popular
choice, he said. Devotion Vodka makes

When I was 17, I started working
out on a regular basis with my older
brother to get ready for college

Each day, I have a different muscle
group I concentrate on, so I don’t

The important thing for me is to keep
a consistent routine. The gym has become worlds easier when I maintain

Each day, I start with a five-minute
cardio warm up, to get the blood flowing and break a bit of a sweat before I
jump into my lifting routine.
Once I am done with the muscle
group I am targeting, I do a little bit of
ab work and finish off the day with 10 to
20 minutes of cardio on either the stair
master or the elliptical.

I like to do sitting curls because

the movement of you arm, forcing your
bicep to do all the work.
Rear delt flies are one of my favorite
exercises to do for back.
Most people are probably familiar
with front facing flies that work your
chest, but they can also be done in
reverse to hit those back muscles.
Pull-ups are a really good exercise
for the back (and a bunch of other
muscles, too).
A traditional pullup works the back,
shoulders, lats and abs.
I admit, I can’t do a pullup without
using the machine that assists you, but
since I started using that machine, the
definition in my back has become
more noticeable.
THURSDAY
Shoulders. Admittedly, shoulders
are one of my least favorite things to
work because it is where I am the
weakest.
To hit shoulders, there are various
exercises that can be done, including
the shoulder press. At most gyms,
there is the option to do a shoulder
press with a machine, as well as with
free weights.
Deltoid raises are good for the
shoulder, as well, and very simple.
With a dumbbell in hand and your arm
at your side, raise the dumbbell up
and then slowly lower it.
FRIDAY & SATURDAY
Since I workout five to six days a
week, I have to a get a bit creative
once my fourth day of workouts is
over.
Typically, on Friday I repeat
exercises from Monday and Tuesday,
making sure to hit at least two
exercises for chest, tricep and legs.
The same goes for Saturday. On
Saturday, I focus on Wednesday and
Thursday’s muscle groups, making
sure to hit at least two exercises for
back, biceps and shoulders.
ALWAYS LEARN
I am constantly observing people
at the gym.
Despite a wide knowledge, I still do
not know everything there is about
working out.
I like to observe people who are in
better shape than I am to see what
they are doing.
I often pick up new exercises from
those people, which help diversify
what I am doing each week.
The most important thing is to
have fun. If your workouts are
constantly changing, there is less a
chance you will get bored in the gym.

The Galleria’s Farmers Market: a local treasure

When you think of a farmers
market, what comes to mind? If
images of bountiful fruits and
vegetables jog your memory, you’re
on the right track and will be
pleasantly surprised with that which
resides in Red Bank’s Galleria every
Sunday through November.
The local farmers market, run by
Sourlis International, is even more
than what you might be expecting.
Fresh, locally-grown produce from
some of New Jersey’s finest farmers,
as well as a satisfying variation of
food and local craft vendors are only
some of what you’ll find at the market,
located in the Red Bank Galleria
parking lot on the corner of Bridge
Avenue and West Front Street.
On any given Sunday, patrons
numbering in the thousands stroll
around the parking lot, which is
delightfully disguised as a pop-up
market that hosts around 40 vendors.
According to George Sourlis, comanager of the market, the farmers
market was not always such a
booming locale. Sourlis said the initial
idea sprouted 15 years ago as a
thought by his mother, Elaine. The
market is operated by George, his
brother Jim Sourlis and brother-in-law
Ted Whitehouse. During its inception,
the market had only a few vendors
and not nearly as much to offer as it
relates to what you’ll find there
present day.
“There are farmers who have their
own garden supplies and produces,
bakeries and bread companies, a
vegan truck,” he said, also mentioning
coffee, craft and honey vendors.
Sourlis said 2,500 to 3,000 people
visit the Galleria parking lot to taste,
try and take home different offerings
from the vendors, all of which are
from New Jersey.

Sunday afternoons at the Galleria
have become a “destination point”
and friendly gathering according to
Sourlis, who finds that many people
he has known in the past show up for
the freshest fares.
“It’s a great way for people to
come see their friends, get some food
and also get other things they need,”
he said.
Not only does the market offer
shaded tables that accompany the
vendors’ products, but it also features
two unique food trucks to go along
with the country-wide recent food
craze.
Vegan lovers can indulge in
offerings from “The Cinnamon Snail”
truck and those with the opposite
preference can dabble in different
options featuring New Jersey’s
carnivorous necessity — pork roll —
at “Johnny’s Pork Roll and Coffee
Truck.”
For those interested in enjoying a
Sunday afternoon with the chance to
take home local foods, pick up fresh
flowers for your special someone or
just to wander and gaze at the area’s
freshest cuisine while forging a sense
of community, the farmers market is
Red Bank’s best place to do so.
A short walk from the downtown
and a rough 100 yards from the Red
Bank Train Station, the market is
conveniently situated and sure to
please.
The market opened for the season
on May 17 and will run through
November from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The market is a member of the
New Jersey Council of Farmers and
Communities as well as a source of
Jersey Fresh from the Garden State.

The Jersey Shore is teeming with talent. More often than not, I find myself
at a bar jam-packed with locals when I
hear an awesome rendition of a Rolling
Stones, Journey, or Bruno Mars song
when I think to myself, “Man, these
guys sound better than the record I
listen to on my iPod.”
More goes into it than just sounding
good; you’ve got to have showmanship
and you need to have a compatible
group of talented musicians who know
their stuff, and know how to deliver it.
That is where the band GoodFellas
comes in.
GoodFellas hails from the Brick and
Point Pleasant area and they are an
awesome cover band that has been
tearing up the music scene lately. You
might recall a band by the name of
American Psychos — they were
around for some time, but recently
changed their name to GoodFellas. As
drummer Tony Nugent put it, “We
wanted to appeal to a wider audience
and open ourselves up to a bigger
market of establishments to play at.”
GoodFellas is a more attractive name,
and the band has had a great start
under the new name playing regularly
at local hot spots such as the
Broadway Bar & Grill in Point Pleasant
Beach, Rella’s Italian Tavern in Brielle,
and Water’s Edge in Bayville.
Nugent is from Holmdel and a
current resident of Brick. The rest of the
band members live in Brick and Point
Pleasant.
GoodFellas’ vibe fits perfectly into
the summer life at the Jersey Shore.
The band is a rock and roll group that
mixes in hits from many eras.
GoodFellas’ repertoire truly does
transcend time as they play songs
made famous by everyone from The
Beatles and the Rolling Stones, to Daft
Punk and Pharrell Williams.
“Our variety is what keeps our fans
happy,” says lead vocalist John
Rumplasch, “and we constantly have
audiences members — young and old
alike — approaching us after shows to
tell us how much they enjoyed hearing
their favorite hits, whether it be from
the ’60s, ’80s, today, or anything in
between.”
Rumplasch moved to the Jersey
Shore area in 1995 after living in Jersey
City, along with bassist Joe Minnervinni.
The two started playing together, and
after seeing an ad online, Nugent joined
in. Together plus another guitar player,
they started American Psychos. In
February, they picked up a new guitarist
— Steve Esposito — and GoodFellas
has been thriving ever since.
“We all come from different musical
backgrounds,” Nugent tells me. “I
started right out on the drums when I
was in second grade and I haven’t
looked back since.” Nugent took a brief
hiatus from the music business after
playing with a Grateful Dead cover
band and a brief stint on some original
projects. “I wanted to get back at it a
while back, and the opportunity arose,
and I have been having more fun than
ever with these guys.”
Along with their backgrounds, each
member of the band has a distinct
personal taste in music. For example,
Nugent mentioned that he is into
alternative music, while Esposito, the
guitarist, is interested in the ’80s. He
draws a lot of inspiration from Eddie
Van Halen, as evident in the tone he
produces with his guitar.

Funky Music” into “Brick House,” “This
Is How we Do It” into “Jump Around,”
and “Rollercoaster” into “Superfreak”
into “Tonight Tonight.”
Other notable covers include songs
from artists like Bruce Springsteen, Cee
Lo Green, the Black Keys, James Brown,
Outkast, Gin Blossoms, Def Leopard,
John Mellencamp, Flo Rida, Bon Jovi,
Avicii, and more. “We have even gotten
into playing some country lately,
playing songs by Florida Georgia Line
and other popular country artists. We
want to keep everyone happy and
having fun, and we want to keep up the
variety,” says Nugent.
GoodFellas is a great party band that
resonates with the upbeat atmosphere
of Jersey Shore bars. They can be found
all over Monmouth and Ocean county

There is a lot to choose from in
Manasquan, especially when it comes to
breakfast and lunch eateries.
One of the best and most popular
places where you can enjoy some
delicious burgers and sandwiches, as
well as an assortment of breakfast
items, is The Committed Pig.
Located at 168 Main St., The
Committed Pig is a “burger and pancake
house,” as indicated by its sign. That
interesting combination of two
mealtimes might lead to some confusion
in the early hours of the day. Should you
order breakfast, or lunch?
Well, as a frequent customer of The
Committed Pig, I can tell you to
absolutely make multiple trips to enjoy
the many different breakfast, lunch and
dinner options available.
The Committed Pig is one of the
more popular local spots I’ve been to in
awhile. You’ll likely have to wait for a
table, especially on the weekend, as the
space inside is rather small, but it is well
worth the wait.
When you walk into this local haunt
from Main Street, you’ll likely notice the
exposed brick walls and large front
windows that allow the sunshine to
brighten up the dimly-lit interior. This
creates an interesting setting for a
restaurant — you might at first think
you’ve stumbled into a new, hip bar. The
Committed Pig does not serve alcohol,
but the option to bring your own
champagne for mimosas or wine for
dinner is always on the table.
Before I had ever eaten at The
Committed Pig, I had noticed a few
people around town sporting t-shirts and
sweatshirts with a single word —
“bacon.” I thought it was some kind of
meat-lovers’ cultural movement, and I

one. I realized that it was actually a
shirt sold at The Committed Pig when I
first went there to eat.
I had heard people rave about the
restaurant, so I had to check it out for
myself. I first went early on a Sunday
morning. I had gotten there at the
perfect time, it seemed, as the hostess
had told me it would be about a fiveminute wait. Just then, a table opened
up right in the front of the restaurant
and I was seated.
I scanned the breakfast section of
the menu while enjoying a fresh glass
of OJ, served in a trendy Mason jar.
My eyes were immediately drawn to
the pork roll and cheese on the menu,
as it stands out in a big, blue font. I was
particularly interested in the pork roll
and cheese sandwich as it is served on
a brioche bun, like a burger, with American cheese ($9).
For once, I didn’t go for the pork roll.
Instead, I went for the one-eyed Pete
($9), which is two eggs grilled between
two pieces of bread and served with
bacon and hash browns. Other notable
breakfast choices are the breakfast
quesadilla ($13), made with scrambled
eggs, onions, tomatoes, ham, fontina,
gruyere and white cheddar on a wheat
tortilla and served with fruit, and the
avocado omelette ($11), an omelette
filled with shaved ham and cheddar
served with toast, bacon, and hash
browns.
The pancake and french toast
options, however, are likely The
Committed Pig’s most delicious and
outstanding breakfast options. For
example, the cookie dough pancakes
($10) are chocolate chip cookie-infused
pancakes that are far better and more
interesting than your standard
chocolate chip pancakes. Similarly, the
red velvet pancakes ($11) rely on the
use of red velvet batter, a cream cheese
glaze and bacon to serve up an
interesting and unique blend of
breakfast flavors.
As mentioned earlier, The
Committed Pig isn’t just a great spot to
enjoy some delicious breakfast, but
also a great place for lunch and dinner.
As indicated on the sign, the burgers
are a specialty and you have a wide
array of options from which to choose.
The illy dilly ($14) is a burger served
with fried pickle chips, American
cheese and Russian dressing. The
jalapeno popper ($14) is served with
cheddar jack cheese, tempura jalapeno
and cream cheese; it should come as
no surprise that I ordered this one, as it
seemed to be the spiciest. Though that
is what I ordered, I was certainly
tempted by the mac and cheese burger
($14), which is — as you might have
guessed — a juicy burger topped with
creamy macaroni and cheese.
Other options include salads, grilled
cheese sandwiches, wings and even
fish tacos that are all definitely worth
checking out if you plan to eat regularly
at The Committed Pig.
The Committed Pig is a great place
to enjoy a tasty meal in downtown
Manasquan, whether it be breakfast,
lunch or dinner. Be patient and
anticipate waiting for a few minutes if
you go on a weekend. You will certainly
not regret your decision to wait for a
table.

area between Belmar and
Manasquan, is packed to the brim
with Irish pubs, so dining out can get
a bit monotonous if you’re not the
biggest fan of that scene.
Luckily, if you’ve gotten bored and
are seeking something different in
this area, then Fratello’s Restaurant in
Sea Girt is the place for you.
Fratello’s is an Italian restaurant
that borders on the Irish pub
atmosphere with its large center bar
and small, cozy booths that hug the
perimeter of the restaurant, although
a private party dining room offers the
authentic Italian dining experience.
The menu offers excellent and
delicious Italian offerings that have
seemingly been lifted directly from a
kitchen in the heart of Tuscany.
Fratello’s is a great haven from
your standard pub scene in the area
as it offers a similar setting inside,
but with a menu entirely its own and
you’ll wonder why you haven’t eaten
here more often.

Beer aisles these days are jampacked with eclectic bottle
selections, and American craft beer
seems to be the driving force behind
it. With a new brewery opening every
day in America, it’s no wonder why.
American craft brewers are
flooding the shelves with a wide
array of packages, from
reinterpretations of old-world styles
to new and unheard of concoctions
with ingredients that have never
been used for. These brewers are
making it easy and fun to get into
beer, so it’s no wonder that when I’m
standing in the beer aisle these are
the bottles I see flying off the
shelves. As exciting as this is, my
heart breaks for a section of the beer
aisle that slowly gathers dust and is
left underappreciated and forgotten
about: Belgian beer!
Without Belgium it’s very hard to
imagine craft beer would even exist
today. While Germany was enforcing
the Reinheitsgebot, a law which
defined what made up beer, the
monks in Belgium were brewing with
whatever they wanted. Wheat, rye,
honey, invert sugar, spices, fruit and
barrel aging were all part of the
Belgian brewer’s play book. Going
against the grain and brewing their
native styles as pilsners and light
lagers began to take over the world,
the brewers of Belgium provided the
inspiration needed to start the craft
beer movement here in the states. I
would even go as far to say that they
are the world’s original craft brewers.

One of the best places to go to
quench your thirst after a long day at
the beach is The Beach Bar in Asbury
Park, nestled on the side of the Asbury
Park Convention Hall.
Here, friendly bartenders are waiting
to take your order and provide good
conversation, like bartending veteran
John Butler.
Butler has been in the game for the
past 15 years, starting as a dishwasher
and working his way up to bartending.
“Usually you become a food runner,
then a bar back, then a waiter and
then a bartender,” Butler said, stating
he enjoys his job. “I’m never going
backwards.”
According to Butler, he was
recruited by The Beach Bar around six
years ago while working at another
bar.
“I’ve seen Asbury grow a lot over
the past six years,” Butler said.
“Especially this bar.”
He said he loves helping people and
giving them the hospitality they
deserve, especially on an off day.
“Just seeing that smile and knowing
that person is here to see you or
remembers your name or had a great
time,” Butler said, describing some of
the best moments when it comes to
bartending.
He said everyone should have the
same experiences as if they were at a
full-service restaurant, whether it be a
selection of The Beach Bar’s cocktails,
appetizers or full-service menu.

The Beach Bar is famous for its rum
buckets, served in an actual bucket,
and the signature drink is a fruity blend
of juices and flavored rums.
To start off, Butler starts to fill the
bucket with a mix of Cruzan rum in
citrus, guava, pineapple and coconut
flavors.
He then takes cranberry, pineapple
and orange juice and fills the bucket up
the rest of the way before topping the
drink off with freshly cut lime, lemon
and orange.
The simple drink is one of the most
popular, and Butler said it is fun to
make because people get bewildered
at the sight of so many bottles going
into one bucket.
The Beach Bar is open from 12 p.m.
to 2 a.m. and has full kitchen, serving
lunch and dinner. Butler said the menu
is being revamped, but recommends
trying the bar’s fish tacos in the mean
time.
