Call for research in Predictive Health: opportunity for innovative research & collaboration
with the Center for Health Discovery & Well Being (CHDWB)
The Predictive Health Institute and the ACTSI announce a call for research proposals using data and/or
specimens from the longitudinal CHDWB cohort. The cohort includes approximately 750 healthy
individuals who were enrolled as early as 2006 and have undergone annual assessments. Clinical and lab
variables collected in the cohort and biological specimens (plasma, serum, urine, buffy coat) from each

Leslee Shaw (Cardiology)
Dr. Shaw was awarded the 2015 Dean’s Distinguished Faculty Lecture and Award, among the most
prestigious and celebratory honors that the School of Medicine can bestow on a faculty member. Learn
more about this honor and read about Dr. Shaw’s lecture last week.
Brandi Wynne (Nephrology)
Dr. Wynne received the American Physiological Society Research Recognition Award - Epithelial
Transport Group at the Experimental Biology meeting this month. Congratulations to Dr. Wynne and her
mentor, Dr. Robert Hoover!
Anshul Patel (Cardiology)
Dr. Patel is site principal investigator of a clinical trial funded by Biosense Webster, Inc. entitled,
“Prospective Safety Assessment of the THERMOCOOL® SMARTTOUCH® SF Family of Contact Force
Sensing Catheters for the Radiofrequency Ablation Treatment of Drug Refractory Symptomatic PAF

Ms. Lu received the American Physiological Society’s Research Recognition Award for Undergraduates at

Transitions to Aging Research (GEMSSTAR)

The GEMSSTAR program provides two years of support for small research projects to allow early career
physicians trained in medical and surgical subspecialties to establish a research track record in geriatric
aspects of their subspecialty. The award will provide an opportunity to gain skills and experience in aging

Information about delays in activities due to NIH software upgrade
On April 9, 2015, NIH issued a notice informing grantees that its ability to issue competing and noncompeting awards may be delayed for two weeks from May 19, 2015 until June 3, 2015. This delay is
due to a software upgrade to NIH accounting and business systems that connect to NIH grant-making
systems. The PDF link below summarize the activities that will and that will not be delayed and

Update on reporting publications in the NIH Research Performance Progress Report
(RPPR)
On April 10, 2015 NIH issued an announcement requesting investigators to electronically report any
publications found in Table 1 of the RPPR which were previously reported using either the paper PHS
2590 non-competing continuation submission or as part of a competing renewal process. This is a
transitional one-time measure to report each publication in an RPPR to ensure that NIH systems can
appropriately store correct association between awards and publications. Read more…

Highlighted Researcher
Hanjoong Jo, PhD (Cardiology)
Dr. Jo is John and Jan Portman Professor in the Coulter Department of Biomedical
Engineering (BME) at Georgia Tech and Emory University, and Professor of Medicine
(Cardiology) at Emory. He is also the Associate Chair of the Emory Department of
Biomedical Engineering. His lab studies how mechanical force associated with blood
flow regulates vascular biology and cardiovascular disease, especially atherosclerosis,
aortic valve (AV) calcification, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. His work led to
discovery of several genes (mechanosensitive genes) that are turned-on by bad
blood flow and play key roles in atherosclerosis and abdominal aortic aneurysm
(AAA). By targeting some of these mechanosensitive genes, his lab has been able to
treat these disorders in mice. In his free time, Dr. Jo enjoys running and walking in
mountains and woods. He also loves to play racket ball and squash. Read more (you
