Meritec Design Win: Military Cable Assembly
Meritec Design Win: Military Cable Assembly Battlefield ready, Meritec’s “Houdini” Custom Cable Assembly allowed the use of their Medical Division technology to solve a Military application. The product calls for a 5-pin cable harness to be mated to a rechargeable battery pack worn by a soldier during training exercises. The device powered the targeting laser mounted on their weapons, similar to Laser Tag. The unique requirement was to mate to a standard female connector mounted to the battery and not only have it be shielded for EMI purposes but, to have it be waterproof under one meter of water for 30 minutes. From clean room precision requirements of an operating room to the harsh environment of a battlefield, Meritec’s Xtreme High-Speed Xperts rise to the innovation demands of Customer commands. Meritec Design Win: Military Cable Assembly Meritec applied a conductive rubber technology developed and used on medical devices. The unique insert molded shielding grommet provides both EMI and environmental sealing. Instead of having to use the conventional steel stamped housings and O-rings to terminate the connection along with potentially having to pot the entire assembly to achieve waterproofing we achieved all of the above with one simple overmold. The cable shield is exposed and the conductive rubber bonds to it forming a low resistance ground path. The rubber gasket design is integral to the overmolding and is proven to The Customer waterproofing requirement. The Customer was impressed enough that they waived a test of prototypes between vendors and awarded us the contract directly. The following slide shows the details of the design.
