Call the office or print the info form and email to the office The parshiot of Acharei Mot and Kedoshim open with the words describing the deaths of Aaron the High Priests two sons, Nadav and Avihu, "When they drew near before the Lord and died." The sudden and dramatic death of these two priests on the very day of their inauguration unto the service of the Tabernacle in front of the entire congregation of Israel gave rise to important questions. What was the nature of the offence? What did they do wrong? In answer the Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah) suggests that they were drunk on entering the Tabernacle, which was expressly forbidden. Indeed the very prohibition is found in the Torah in the very next section. The Parsha depicts them as impatient and ambitious to succeed the 'old timers,' Moshe and Aharon, thus giving the impression that they longed for their deaths. It is here that we realize that the purpose of doing the mitzvot, individually and collectively, is to produce holiness. Why then, is there a specific injunction commanding us to be holy? What does this imperative add to the other mitzvot? Kedoshim, with its classic command, "ye shall be holy; for I the Lord your God, am holy," is at the very heart of the Chumash (the Five Books of Moses). It physically lies in the central portion of Vayikra (Leviticus) and is truly at the core of the Torah. It is an entity sufficient unto itself. If the world were stripped of everything else ever written concerning the art of living, we could still found a fundamental philosophy, a religion, a way of life based on these chapters. This way of life if adhered to, would still surpass any other lasting civilization. Our Jewish way of life, so magnificently outlined in these chapters on holiness, spells out guidelines that have served our people and all mankind directly and indirectly down through the centuries. And these guidelines are still valid in our contemporary world of twentieth-century man. Good Shabbos Rabbi Gabe Elias
