Hello Neihardt Families, Our parking lot has been a hot topic of concern after school each day. You may have noticed law enforcement presence this week. They will periodically be in our parking lot before and after school. The officers are here to make sure that the cars picking up students are following traffic safety rules and ensure the safety of the students and staff. We can all be a part of the solution if the procedure on the attached map are followed each day. (See page 6). April has arrived! Please see inside for our Family Nights early in May. The last few years these events have been successful because of family involvement. Thank you ahead of time! 15-16 Class Placements In the next couple of months, we will begin the process of class placements for the 15-16 school year. When we create class lists, our primary goal is to provide a positive learning experience for all students. We work hard to create balanced classrooms that address different personalities, leadership, abilities, learning styles, peer relations, and a balance of girls/boys too. Our teachers know the children in the school environment and obviously have unique insights into their social, emotional, behavioral, and academic needs. We recognize that you value your child’s education and can offer valuable insight into your child’s placement next year too. While I DO NOT accept specific teacher requests because I have confidence in the abilities of each teacher in our school, I do want to provide you an opportunity to give me a perspective of what you see as your child’s strengths, areas of need, motivators, interests, and/or special needs or considerations. If you choose to provide some input, please email me at cnovotny@mpsomaha.org – title the subject line 15-16 Student Placement or by letter. The deadline to provide this information is on or before May 1st, 2015. I will email you back with a response that I have received your email/letter within 24 hours. If you don’t hear back from me, please contact the office by phone. Knights at the Museum Raffle Brought back by popular demand is the Raffle Theme Baskets! Our Neihardt Community loved all of the donations from last years’ raffle — that is what made this fundraiser such a huge success! Please see page 5 for your child’s grade theme!! Counselor’s Corner We are the Knights...The Mighty, Mighty Knights! We always try to do what’s right! As we approach testing season, especially for our intermediate students, many students, parents and even educators feel a sense of frustration and stress and ask “Why so much testing?” While we are all working under the duress of making sure we a have a way of measuring that all students are learning, let’s try turning our attention to the long term goal. Kids are learning so they can acquire the necessary skills for the world of work. This will hopefully lead them to fulfilling and rewarding lives. As adults, we all know the importance of feeling good at our jobs. After all, we spend a huge amount of our lives doing our work. March counseling lessons focused on school to work skills and the importance of persevering even when something is hard for us to learn. Talk to your kids about your jobs and careers. Link their school subjects to what helps you do your job! Highlight how you use reading, math, writing, or drawing and your physical skills to do your work and earn money! This will help kids to see the importance of what they are doing each day at school. This is especially important as we approach the end of the school year; when many kids experience “burn out” and focus on summer on the horizon. Together, we can partner to help our kids focus and persevere for their futures! Healthroom 3rd, 4th & 5th Grade NESA Testing Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade will be taking the State NESA Tests. They have been working hard to prepare for this assessment. It is important that all students are present for these testing dates. Please avoid making appointments or scheduling vacations during this time. In order for your child to be as successful as possible on this assessment, please make sure that they get plenty of sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and come to school with a positive attitude.
