BOARD BUSINESS
Lawn Mowing - Barbara Pesic
Starting in April, mowing will occur weekly (every Friday) through the month of September. Upcoming mow dates are: April 3, 10, 17 and 24, and in the following month: May
1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
Handling Grievances
Should you have any problems with the mowing service, please advise Barbara Pesic via
phone or email. It is requested that residents not give verbal instructions to the mowing crew.
All complaints are to be addressed by the management of the mowing service. Thank you very
much for your compliance.
Important Things to Remember – Gene Arend
If you are making changes to the exterior of your property, you are required to complete
an Architectural Control Form first to obtain approval -- even if those changes are minor, or
include changing out Windows or painting your property with a color that exists in the community. And, even though those type of changes have prior board acceptance, it’s still necessary
to complete the form. I understand there is an element of bureaucracy, but in order for us to
maintain consistency with our documents in the event of a legal issue, we need to record and
file the document.
If you are selling your property or leasing the property, there is a Sales/Lease Application
form required by the association documents. Again, this may seem bureaucratic too, but in order
BRIAR CREEK BUGLE
APRIL, 2015
N
5
to maintain an accurate roster and meet the Federal Housing Act that grants us the 55+ community, the form is necessary. We have Linda Miller and Pat Arend available to greet all new
residents prior to closing or leasing. Linda & Pat represent the Board of Directors and will sign
the Title Transfer Authorization form required by the Title Company prior to closing. Failure
to complete the process could delay the closing.
Both forms are available online on the www.mybriarcreek.com or in the bins outside the
director’s office. Your cooperation will help us maintain the community you all expected when
you purchased your home. If you are leasing seasonally with repeat residents and/or prior residents, inform Linda or Pat who can retrieve the original application. This will then expedite
the process and update our records. Roads/Grounds/Utilities

Board Meeting – Gene Arend
T
he next board meeting is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, April 1 at 7 PM. This
will allow our residents not available on early Wednesday to come and be a part of the
Board Meeting. Remember if you are a resident but not currently an owner,
the meetings are open and your opinion is encouraged. The board meeting is, of
course, a Corporate Business meeting among the seven (7) directors; however, we
encourage all to come and watch. It allows all of the directors an opportunity to
meet collectively under the Florida Sunshine Laws. We do on some occasion
ask attendees for input. There is always an open session for all at the conclusion
of the formal business portion. After this meeting, as summer months approach, the demands
change and we may move to an every-other-month schedule. Signs will be posted and the new
message center will keep you informed.

Clubhouse Restrooms – Gene Arend
W
e will soon be formalizing plans and requesting quotes for redoing the
two clubhouse restrooms. We already have a pre-approved budget. Our
plan is to blend some modest ideas and some modern ideas to improve
the restrooms. Although we want a new fresh look with improvements to meet
our senior needs, we will remain mindful these are restrooms of convenience.

Hey, Hey, Let's Recycle Today!
O
n February 18, Solid Waste Program Coordinator Jan Tracey addressed residents at the
weekly Wednesday meeting about recycling, especially as it applies to recent changes
in the program. As you may be aware, once-a-week trash pickup on Mondays is now
the norm for Briar Creek. Yard trash is picked up on Wednesdays and Recyclable products are
picked up on Thursdays.
Recent changes include a more detailed description of what can deposited in Briar Creek's
recycle bins. The good news is that every recyclable item can be put in the same container;
this is because Pinellas County has an automated separation process, something that will save
our residents time and effort. As you can see on the chart below, any plastic item that has code
numbers within the triangle (from 1 to 7) can be included in recycle tubs. For more detailed
information, see www.pinellascounty.org/recycle or, if you prefer to email, the address is recycle@pinellascounty.org.

VP Social Club and Entertainment Chairperson
Linda Edington
D
ear Neighbors: First a little information about me. I have lived in Briar Creek for three
months moving most recently from Largo. I grew up in Minnesota and have lived in
eight different states. I am single, no children and I have three brothers and three sisters
who live in different states. Professionally I was an administrator for colleges. A few of my
favorite things are dancing, reading, running, biking, swimming, hiking, laughing, doing house
projects, traveling and sewing.
Thank you for your confidence in me to be your VP of the Social Club and Entertainment
Chairperson this year. I am excited to partner with David and bring you a fun- filled year of
activities. As David has said more than once, we want your suggestions. Tell us, write in the
suggestion box, and send us emails.
Several of you have already offered your assistance and I am grateful for that. Be assured,
I will be taking you up on that offer and asking others to help as well. The activities here will
be successful with more neighbors’ contributions. As some of you are aware, Dave is also not
here full time in the summer and we invite anyone who wants to co-lead the Wednesday morning meeting to please, please let us know. Remember, let your light shine and share your talent
with us.
I have been making calls to confirm monthly talent. I will get you as much information
as I can about the performers to make sure you want to come and have fun with the rest of us.
You will see some changes intended to make selling tickets and simplifying preparations for
each event easier. Remember, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Our plan
is the same enjoyment that has been here year after year.
2/25/15 Social Club Meeting
A
t Wednesday's meeting, Pinellas County Deputy Charles Skipper addressed our attendee
residents on the various scams, phishing, and unsavory soliciting techniques floating
around that traditionally target older citizens -- and how devious (and believable)
many of these methods are. The methods all have one goal: to get your money!
Phishing is the attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames,
passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money) by
masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. In
other words, if you receive an email telling you that you've won some sort
of lottery, don't believe it! Just delete the email. If someone knocks on your
door, telling you they have a deal for you, don't fall for it. They may be "just
in the neighborhood today," or "they just sold your neighbor something," or "they
have something you can't live without," don't believe them. You have every right to privacy and

safety in your own home. Remember, you don't owe an uninvited stranger any undue courtesy.
You can tell them to go away.
If you have any concerns about your personal safety, don't hesitate to call a friend or neighbor
to come over. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then call the non-emergency number for
the Sheriff's Department (727) 582-6200.
As Deputy Skipper mentioned during his presentation, don't EVER hesitate calling that
number. Your safety is one of their biggest concerns. In other words, they care about you!
An Update from Deputy Skipper
H
ello, Neighborhood Watch chairpersons, just a notice that there has been at least four
burglaries inside the gated communities of East Lake Woodlands since January. These
burglaries have taken place during the day time. (Statistically, about 65%
of home burglaries occur during the day.) Two of the victims were home with
their garage doors open, when items were removed from the garage.
The other two, one of which occurred yesterday, were to unoccupied
homes during the day. During one, the burglary happened while the couple
were gone for less than 3 hours. The home had a security system, but it was
not activated. Both homes had large rear privacy fences and burglars targeted the
rear sliders as a point of entry.
Please report suspicious persons or vehicles in your neighborhood. Strangers on bicycles
with back packs or suspicious vehicles deserve a second look and your attention. The nonemergency number for suspicious persons is 582-6200. Stay safe.

Bereavement Flag Policy – Gene Arend
I
n order to give some organization and uniformity with regards to our community members
who have passed away, the Association President, Social Club President, and Bereavement/
Sunshine Committee Chair met to formalize a policy. With the installation of the new message center, when Mary Houpt receives notice someone from Briar Creek 1 has passed away,
she will list the names of the individuals on the message center board. She will arrange to have
the flag lowered to half-mast for three (3) consecutive days. This length of time is considered
a reasonable amount of time for the residents of Briar Creek to take notice and recognize who
passed away. The dates and other information can be found on the website and/or in the clubhouse. Once the flag is returned to its normal position, the names will be removed from the
message center. We also decided that any resident of Briar Creek, either past or present, will
receive the same acknowledgement. It was deliberated and agreed that all residents of Briar
Creek, past or present, have made contributions to our community and as such merit, a gesture
of reflection for those who may have known them.
Thank you
I
want to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for all the cards, calls and other expressions of sympathy that I received on the occasion of Tom’s passing. He was a dear and
good man, and I miss him.
Sincerely, Joan O’Dell
Library News
Naomi Fiacable/Linda Hayes/Carol Marsella (summer)
F
or those of you who use the library, you may have noticed a
different informal look. Most of the books are sideways on
the shelves so the titles, and, in most cases, the authors, are
more easily read. The reason we have chosen to do this rather than
the library norm is for those who have trouble reading sideways and
to provide more space on the present shelving for additional books.
We have moved the hardback NONFICTION books to the
bookcase in front of the windows and the shelves have been clearly
marked, but we kept the softback NONFICTION in the last bookcase by the door going to the
office. We separated the FANTASY genre from the FICTION and gave them a separate location
on the back of the center bookcase. These include both hard and soft-back books. These are the
Twilight and Harry Potter series as well as others which were mingled among the FICTION. We
BRIAR CREEK BUGLE

also separated the HISTORICAL ROMANCE from the ROMANCE for those who prefer a bit
of history in their romantic reading. They are located on the right front of the center bookcase.
Our volunteers who work in the library, work hard to maintain the library donations that
arrive daily. As always, we enter them into the New Books section to the left of the windows
where they remain for 30 days. All of the book shelves are clearly marked as they were before.
We hope we have made it easier to read the titles of the books you like and will continue enjoying our Briar Creek Phase I Community Library as you have in the past.
We also provide DVD's (movies) and AUDIOBOOKS (both cassette and CD) in the cabinets/bookcase by the Bingo Board in the main area. We have movies for children also. The
locations are clearly marked. We are currently accepting DVD and Audiobook donations. When
returning or donating new books, DVD's, or Audiobooks, please place them in the basket or, if
the basket is full, on the floor beside the basket for the library workers to stamp and put in the
proper locations.

tarting on March 8, Pat Arend and Jane Fedelem, two very accomplished Mahjongg players, will be offering free lessons of this ancient Chinese game to all who would like to
learn. Men and women are welcome to participate. No partners, just friendly competition
and a mind-challenging hour.
The lessons will be at 11:30 AM on Sundays and, after you feel competent enough to play
with others who have already learned the game, you’re welcome to join
those who play at 12:30 PM on Sundays or make up your own table
of three or four players. Sign-up sheet is on the hallway wall in the
Clubhouse so that Pat and Jane can get an idea how many new players
would like to participate.

ny one interested in playing table tennis, please contact: David

in a request to the social club to acquire a table for our use. We

APPRECIATION NIGHT
Ann Daley
A
ppreciation night was a huge success, and I was so happy my family, and friends could
be there to enjoy it with us. The programs were done, so professionally, by editor Jean
Richter and her reporters. Before the show there was a happy hour with great food
provided by Chef Mary Kay McBride and her staff of helpers. Joan Bienvenue choreographed,
directed and emceed the play like a true blue Broadway director with some help from a few
"back stage hands."
When the curtain went up and the show began, all 27 acts were so wonderful, better than
any Broadway play. All the performers were our own Briar Creek friends from Phase 1 and 2.
Jerry Richter, our paparazzo, did a great job taking pictures. I would like to thank everyone
who helped make this a night I will never forget. Good luck to Dave Doran, all his Officers and
Committee Leaders for this coming year.
MESSAGE FROM SOCIAL CLUB PRESIDENT
Dave Doran
A
s our term begins, we want to thank Ann Daley and all who worked with her during
the past year; great job. As President, I asked Linda Edington, who stepped up to do
entertainment this year, to also be my Vice President.
Between the two of us, we intend to do the best job we can, bring some fun into the club and
will work very hard to empower our community residents to volunteer for a number of different
projects and program, because without volunteers, these may no longer exist.
We have put up a "VOLUNTEER" sheet on the bulletin as a start. Add your name and
phone number, so if someone is looking for volunteers, they can call you. Or better yet, just ask
someone if you can offer help or volunteer in some way. Great way to meet people and have

Briar Creek Store
Dave Doran and Ray Jablonski
O
ur first full fiscal year is over and we did so good! Not only met a lot of interesting
people, but we tried hard to make the store a fun place to shop. Great place to pick
up furnishings if you're a new resident; great place to donate stuff that you are either
replacing with new, or just getting rid of stuff you no longer want or need. Thanks! Everything
we take and sell goes to fund Social Club events for the year.
Always check the BC website: www.mybriarcreek.com and check the BC Mart link. You
will be surprised at all the goods shown.
Thanks to Ray Jablonski who has been a great help this year, and also to Joe Guazzerotti,
who looks after the store during the summer. Come and visit us soon; hours are posted in the
store window!

Have You Lost Something?
D
id you know there is a "Lost & Found" area in Briar Creek's clubhouse? The cabinet is
located in the area opposite the Clubhouse Office door and look for the Lost
& Found sign on the white cabinet. Items that have been found by
the pool, near the spa, in and around the clubhouse are stored there. At last
check, there is a man's wrist watch (faux Rolex), a NYPD man's cap, a pair
of swim goggles, as well as many other items in residence.
Take a moment also to check out the bulletin board near the outside door
that leads to the shuffleboard area. Small items (earrings, keys, etc.) are clipped
to the board that also have been misplaced by their owners.
The bulletin board is also used to advertise "for-sale-by-owner" items. There just might be
something posted you cannot live without!

Briarettes’
Carol Smitley – President
L
ast month was our annual style show. I want to thank Yaeko Parish, Jane Galvin, Helen
Ham, Betty Hudd, Carolyn Jablonski and Jean Richter for volunteering to model the
clothes from BonWorth. They did a fabulous job even though the program was delayed
for a few minutes. Our meeting for April will be our famous Dump Salad.
For those of you not familiar with Dump Salad, Briarettes will supply
the lettuce and dressing and those that attend bring their favorite topping to
share. The sign-up sheet will be in the hallway in Phase I and II. Some may
choose to bring dessert. That would be great. Remember to bring a $1.00 for
50/50 and if you haven’t purchased your membership ticket the cost is $2.00.
The date is April 7th at 1pm, mark it on your calendar.
This will be our last meeting until October.

T
he Briar Creek II shuffle board team finished the season in second place in the Sterling
Shuffle Board League. As Captain of the your team, I am very proud of our team on
how they played to try and win each of their individual games and how they presented
themselves at the matches. I would like to thank Ellie Prevost & Vivian French for baking cakes
for the home games. Thank you to Pete Loranger for your continuous support of the
shuffle board club and for preparing the coffee at our home games. The team also
says a big thank you to the Briar Creek Social Club and the Briar Creek board of

till next season.
Monthly For April
ASPCA Month. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates
that an animal is abused every 60 seconds. Every April the ASPCA urges the public to “go
orange” in support of the fight against animal cruelty. Set aside one day each week to call attention to the problem of cruelty by wearing orange—or go all out and wear orange every day.
Find out more at the ASPCA website.
National Kite Month. Celebrate the arrival of spring by going outside and flying a kite.
The American Kitefliers Association plans events worldwide in April to promote the wonderful
qualities that kite flying has to offer people of all ages and physical ability levels.
Mathematics Awareness Month. Held every April, Mathematics Awareness Month was
created in 1986 to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. Activities
are organized on local, state, and regional levels by college and university departments, institutional public information offices, student groups, and related associations and interest groups.
Multiple Birth Awareness Month. The National Association of Mothers of Twins Clubs
Inc. is dedicated to supporting families of multiple birth children through education, research,
and networking. During April, the organization seeks to raise public awareness of the unique
qualities of multiple birth families.
