( “the many feathered wreaths at the summit, held in high esteem” )
As haumana (student) of Nā Lei Hulu I Ka Wēkiu, this is your kuleana (responsibility):
1. To remain a student in good standing, tuition is due each month, whether or not you choose to
attend classes. Fees include:
!
One-time $20 processing fee due at time of enrollment
!
Monthly tuition fee of $50.00 due at the first class of each month, but no later than the
12th of each month. Classes are held weekly and ongoing indefinitely.
!
For your convenience, we accept Cash, Checks and Bill Pay checks.
- Tuition fees can be given to Aunty Bobbie, Debbie Garcia, Debbie Tong, or John Shima.
- Checks are payable to PATRICK MAKUAKĀNE
- Bill Pay can be set up with your bank and sent to the hālau address:

Other fees may apply:
- $10.00 late fee when paying after the 12th day of the month – no exceptions
* Avoid this fee by mailing your checks to hālau address BEFORE the 12th of each month
- $20.00 Returned Check Fee due to insufficient funds.
- $20.00 Reinstatement Fee if dropped from class roll and re-joining (see #3 below)
- $ 1.00 Lost & Found Fee per item (see #2 below)
2. Class-Related Requirements:
! Please bring to class a 3-ring binder with notebook paper for notes, songs, and
instruction. Please write your name in your notebook and on hula implements. “Lost &
Found Fee” is $1.00 per item.
!
Recommended Attire: Non-restrictive clothing. Women are required to wear a hula pā’ū
(skirt) within 3-months of enrollment. Sewing instructions provided on reverse page or
email hālau dressmaker Debbie Tom sterlingrose@mac.com to special order.
!
To avoid class disruption, please be respectful, all cell phones should be turned OFF or on
silent mode while in session, unless you are on a 24-hour call due to your job.
3. Absenteeism:
! If absent more than 2 months, you will be dropped from the student rolls.
! If dropped from the rolls, there is a $20.00 re-instatement fee to re-join.
! To avoid being dropped, please contact auntybobbie@naleihulu.org if you know you will
be out for extenuating reasons (e.g. any personal or professional reasons you may have)
4. Make-up Classes:
! You may attend any class equal or newer than yours to make up any missed classes.
Make-up classes must be completed within two weeks of absence.
5. Personal Profile:
! It is the haumana’s (student’s) responsibility to notify the Hālau Kokua of any updates to
personal information ( address, e-mail, phone #, emergency contact, absences, etc.)

Instructions to sew a Hula Pā’ū
For waist less than 40-inches, use 4 yards material, or less.
For waist greater than 40-inches, use 5 yards, or more.
Sew the ends of the fabric (lengthwise); on one end sew a 2” hemline.
Measure skirt length 4-inches below middle of kneecap or to mid-calf.
Fold excess fabric in & press with iron.
From the seam line, sew a 1-inch ruffle casing followed by seven 1/2-inch casings.
Open every other casing and insert 3/8-inch elastic.
Adjust elastic to waist size.
