Missing aircraft: Search teams inch towards location NT Bureau / PTI Chennai, June 15: The extensive search operations for the Dornier aircraft which went missing a week ago with a three member crew, made progress when a submarine picked up feeble intermittent signals this morning. It may be noted that naval submarine INS Sindhudhvaj that was into underwater search had also picked up signals on Sunday which are most likely from the missing plane. The submarine was brought to the Karaikal-Cuddalore region to confirm the transmission of 37.5 Khz from sonar locator beacon of the missing aircraft. While experts from National Institute of Oceanography (NIOT) team and a black box detector are already involved in the rescue mission, it is reported that a vessel belonging to the National Institute of Ocean Technology would launch its under-sea probe today. A team of four scientists are also on board a Coast Guard ship to help locate the cockpit voice data recorder of the missing plane. Earlier, the assistance of the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad, was requested by the Coast Guard to provide satellite imagery for analysis of the area for possible location of the aircraft. Tatkal ticket booking no more the same q New system comes into effect from today q Plan aimed at keeping agents at bay NT Bureau Chennai, June 15: From today, the Indian Railways will implement new timings for online booking of Tatkal. Under the revised timings, slots have been divided based on AC and non-AC tickets. ‘The online reservation for air conditioned coach tickets under Tatkal scheme will open at 10 am on the previous day of journey, and from 11 am, passengers can book for non-AC classes’. Railway officials say that increased online traffic and fraudulent agents are reasons for the new timings. ‘We want to ensure that individuals get more access to tickets’. The change has been effected to facilitate hassle-free booking by reducing load on the server, a senior Railway official said. ‘Staggering the timings will help reducing load at windows and the ticketing sites,’ he added. Suresh Prasad, who commutes regularly to Kolkata, welcomed the move. ‘For those who couldn’t make it in AC class can at least try in sleeper without losing hope,’ he stated. In an attempt to facilitate the common man, all ticketing agents including those of IRCTC will be restricted in booking tickets for the first 30 minutes from the opening time--- from 8 am to 8.30 am for general bookings, from 10 am to 10.30 am for Tatkal AC classes, and from 11 am to 11.30 am for Tatkal non-AC classes, the Railways said in a statement. Meanwhile, Vasudevan, an approved IRCTC agent from Sowcarpet said that this change would do no good to common people. ‘The probability of unapproved agents making profits is high. Only when the system is completely organised to prevent it, people will be benefited,’ he added. He also said that the burden on office goers will increase as they should be keen in booking the tickets at the prescribed time. However, the proposal of refunding a percentage of fare on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets will be beneficial, if implemented. An ex-railway official from Adambakkam, Sudarshan said that the railways should not delay the proposal. ‘Poor and middle class occupy a large part of railway commuting for whom the money means a lot. The implementation should be done at the earliest,’ he felt. School children take a look at the ‘Yagnaterium’ at Chinmaya Heritage Centre, Chetpet. Mithrananda, Director - National Projects, All India Chinmaya Yuva Kendra (AICHYK) said Guruji (Swami Chinmayananda) preached values of high worth, it is upto all of us to imbibe them in our lives. Releasing the voice card (opening the brain, which uses glucose to work, lacks energy. Breakfast restores one’s glucose levels and gets metabolism back into action, doctors and dietitians said. It improves concentration and memory and is good for your waistline. Nutritionists advised that while breakfast should be eaten within two hours of waking up, a lot depends on what you eat. Dr Shail Yadav, nutritionist at a city-based clinic, said, ‘the day’s first meal should be loaded with important nutrients like calcium, iron, proteins, fibre and vitamin B. Unfortunately, food consumed as breakfast in India are not made for good health. The excess of sugar, butter, ghee (clarified butter) and oil pose which pours out a message from Swami Chinmayananda), he said ‘the message is only for 20 seconds, but if one listened to it carefully, its value and essence was for a lifetime.’ Earlier, children had an opportunity to see a multi-media presentation on the theme ‘God though manifests in many forms, he is one,’ in an Yagnaterium, an igloo-shaped structure establised at Chinmaya Heritage Centre. About 200 children got to go inside the structure to watch the presentation which lasted about 18 minutes. A representative at the Yagnaterium said the presentation dealt with the symbolism portrayed by our deities, but how the common factor behind all these forms of divine manifestation is the same. ‘Take Lord Ganesha for example, we tried to explain what the trunk symbolises, when it comes to Lord Shiva the presentation tried to bring out the significance of Lord Shiva’s trident and the real idea behind the three sacred ash lines on His forehead.’ About 200 children got a chance to view the presentation. Yagnaterium also attracted attention of elders too with many opting to catch a glimpse of the manifestations of various Gods. HENCE THE FENCE a huge problem, she said. She pointed out that greasy, oily foods have a high concentration of bad fats, undermining health. They are also a lot of calories and dietary fats, leading to obesity and elevated levels of bad cholesterol (LDL). The slow but steady deposition of fat and plaque on the walls of arteries obstructs blood flow and eventually triggers a heart attack or stroke. High cholesterol can also create a bile imbalance, leading to gall stones. Today’s youngsters get so busy with life that they most often skip breakfast. They do not realise the danger of this but later while growing old they suffer, she added. To maintain optimum health, you also need to cut down on added sugar, replacing sugary breakfast cereals with those high in fibre and low in sugar content. Sugar addicts can use sugar substitutes as a safe alternative. These are also ideal for those suffering from diabetes, obesity and other health conditions. Stevia, aspartame, and sucralose are three sugar substitutes popular worldwide those are now available in India too, the doctor said. Shail Yadav advised people to have food rich in whole grains, fibre, protein and carbohydrates, and low in added sugar or saturated fats. It is important to rotate the diet and also not to eat the same dish every day. ‘Have variety in terms of dishes and even on the same day consume a little bit of everything.’ ‘Some healthy breakfast options include porridge, oatmeal, fruit salad, Doctors say it is important for people to opt for healthier substitutes to butter and sugar and look to consume food rich in whole grains, fibre, protein and carbohydrates whole wheat bread, table spreads with Omega-3, muesli, multi-grain dosa, poha, upma, sambar dal, soya, sprouts, vegetable sandwiches, corn, low-fat or zero-fat milk and yogurt, buttermilk, cottage cheese, fresh fruit juices, brown rice, whole grain cereals, and fruits like banana, watermelon and apple. Avoiding food with high sugar content like pastries and cereals filled with sugar, canned fruit juices, omelettes or paranthas fried in unhealthy cooking oil, butter or ghee, white bread, white rice, French toast, instant noodles, fatty meats, yogurt and other products made from whole milk. Her advice: Go for healthier substitutes to butter and sugar. Towards a cleaner Marina beach ‘Displaced’ vendors unhappy, say income down NT Bureau Chennai, June 15: Beach-goers are in for better, read cleaner times as the city Corporation’s efforts to maintain neatness took a big step forward as the unorganised hawkers agreed to move to designated spots. Sources said the Corporation had already completed most of the work on shifting shops by reclaiming the sands from 2,500 unorganised vendors along the stretch from Triumph of Labour Statue to Light House. After the regulation drive, Corporation beach cleaning machines have been able to clean more spaces on the beach. Many of the shops were a hindrance for cleaning the beach. Machines were unable to clean the waste collected near shops. Now the sands can be kept clean of this waste as the machine can move freely across the stretch. Children are now seen playing in large numbers on the vast expanse of unoccupied sands, without hindrance. ‘Shopkeepers used to prevent us from playing fearing that we would hinder their business. Chennai, Jun 15 (PTI): The arrest of some African nationals for allegedly trafficking narcotic drug cocaine in Tamilnadu is causing concern to the authorities here as they suspect it could be part of a larger smuggling network. A gang comprising nationals of several African countries is suspected to be behind the supply chain of cocaine to individual addicts in Tamil Nadu and is operating from hideouts in Bengaluru, a top official said. ‘A gang in Bengaluru, (which is) a network of some African guys, is behind the supply of cocaine to Tamilnadu and it could be a bigger gang or part of a larger network as smuggling and supplying cocaine is not easy,’ Narcotics Control Bureau Zonal Director Prem Anand Sinha told PTI. Narcotics Control Bureau data related to those arrested in Tamilnadu for possession of commercial quantity cocaine (over 100 grams) in the past one year alone demonstrates the involvement of African nationals in drug peddling, he said. In February this year, Kuami Ebeniser, a Ghanaian national, was arrested for possession of 160 grams of cocaine here. Last month, a Nigerian, Izuoba Augustine Chibuike was caught with 190 grams of cocaine in the city, while a Tanzanian, Mark Hendry was arrested for possessing 123 g of cocaine. There is reason to believe that this will not be another committee and another report since the Modi government appears determined to transform the Railways and minister Suresh Prabhu was handpicked for the job. Well-off people may get a choice to travel by super-fast private trains run by the Ambanis and the Tatas. Allaying fears in some quarters, the committee has clarified that it has endorsed private entry as in the case of airports, ports, telecom and roads, but not recommended privatisation of the Railways. The Railways provides affordable travel to ordinary people. Without sacrificing this service, the Railways has to be made commercially viable. This is a challenge since high-end passenger and freight business would possibly go to more-efficient private players. To balance public service and private profit, and curb the malaise of political interference in the functioning of the Railways it is proposed that a regulatory authority be set up independent of the Railway Ministry having a statutory backing, with a separate budget and with quasi-judicial powers. Incidentally, the drama of presenting a separate budget for the Railways may come to an end as many experts see it as a colonial practice. The committee also favours the separation of peripheral activities like running schools and hospitals, real estate, catering and maintaining the Railway Protection Force from the core business of transportation. Three key functions of the Railways — policymaking, regulatory work and operation — may get separated. It is apparent the Railway Board is not going to be happy about the committee’s recommendations, which also include decentralisation of powers. It wants to develop divisions and zones as independent business centres. Big ideas all, and some make sense too, but where is the money? An investment advisory committee of experts has been proposed to raise resources. The railway assets, including surplus land, may be monetised or commercially exploited. The burden on passengers, however, should be minimum and freight rates should not become so high that industry turns to road transportation. It is an ambitious vision. Let’s see how this pans out. That’s called echo effect. But we don’t always press ‘like’ or ‘share’ buttons on every post that pops up in our Facebook feed, even if we like it or care about it. Now, Facebook would know even without any of your ‘labelled’ activity whether particular stuff in the News Feed interests you or not. Facebook is tweaking its algorithms to account for a new metric: the amount of time you spend looking at things in your feed, regardless of whether or not you actively interact with it, TechCrunch reported. Scroll past something without stopping for long, and Facebook’s algorithms will slowly learn that you don’t particularly care for that sort of content. Stop on a post for a bit, and Facebook starts the timer behind the scenes. If you spend more time on this story than you spend on most things in your feed a’ studying a picture, perusing the comment thread a’ they will take that as a signal that it’s something you care about. This change allows Facebook’s algorithms to take the hint without requiring you to lift a finger. Once things shift toward passive behaviour analysis, Facebook’s News Feed begins to understand what you care about more than you ever could. Facebook said it would be introducing the algorithm tweak in the coming weeks. However, don’t expect any dramatic changes to what pops up in your feed, at least not very soon. It will take some time before it actually makes an impact. Especially, pages are not likely to see significant changes in distribution as a result of this update. The young man, who was named as Abu Yusuf al-Britani, was shown standing next to a black vehicle in photographs posted on Islamic Stateaffiliated social media accounts, the Guardian newspaper reported. The posts said he then took part in a suicide attack in Iraq’s Salahuddin province. He is believed to be Talha Asmal, a teenager who left West Yorkshire in March, and was thought to have joined Islamic State, according to a statement from his family. ‘Although the information within these reports has not been confirmed and the relevant UK authorities are working hard to verify the facts, we can confirm that the photographs shown of a youth purportedly named MERS spreading amid porous quarantine SEOUL: The number of patients with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome continues to rise, with 24 cases newly confirmed over the weekend, bringing the total to 150. Many newly confirmed cases were the result of ignoring quarantine rules. An ambulance driver for Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, who was supposed to be closely monitored after contact with a confirmed MERS patient, moved freely around the hospital for several days before being diagnosed. Another driver of a private ambulance was also infected after coming in contact with a MERS patient without protection. And a staffer with an IT firm in Busan visited several hospitals and pharmacies before he was tested for MERS, because he did not tell doctors he had been seconded to Daechung Hospital, a source of MERS in Daejeon. That man alone is believed to have been in contact with over 900 people who may in turn have spread the disease. Health authorities are urging people to avoid hospitals and inform them if they have a fever so they can be transferred to a designated MERS hospital. Patients should give doctors as much detail as possible, including on where they have been. Cheong Hee-jin of Korea University Guro Hospital in Seoul said, ‘The MERS virus is not airborne, and people get infected by contact with body fluids like blood, sweat, and saliva. After it objected to a decision in March by Belgium to introduce a new 2 euro coin to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Napoleon’s defeat at Waterloo, the Belgians retreated, scrapping 180,000 coins they had already minted. But victory for France is proving elusive. This week, Belgium decided to circumvent French resistance by invoking a little-known European Union rule that allows countries to issue euro coins of their choice, provided they are in an irregular denomination. That led to the unveiling of a €2.50 coin - a first in Belgium - and 70,000 of them have now been minted. The coins, which can only be spent inside Belgium, display a monument of a lion atop a cone-shaped hill on the site of France’s humiliation, as well as lines indicating where troops were positioned when forces led by Britain and Prussia defeated Napoleon in the countryside near Brussels. Sudan President detained in South Africa JOHANNESBURG: A South African judge ordered authorities to prevent Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who is in South Africa for an African Union summit, from leaving the country because of an international order for his arrest, human rights activists said. al-Bashir appeared for a group photo with other African leaders at the summit in Johannesburg on Sunday, wearing a blue three-piece suit, a tie and a smile as cameras flashed. Earlier Sunday, a South African judge ordered authorities to prevent al-Bashir from leaving South Africa because he is wanted by the International Criminal Court, human rights activists said on Sunday. The African National Congress, which is South Africa’s ruling party, British Muslim family, and the entire family unreservedly condemned and abhorred all acts of violence wherever they were perpetrated. West Yorkshire police said they were aware of the reports, but were unable to comment further as the person’s identity had not been confirmed. According to media reports, Islamic State said ‘al-Britani’ was one of four suicide bombers - with the others said to be a German, a Kuwaiti and a Palestinian - who took part in the attack. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the region’s carriers are expected to see a 12.9 per cent growth in passenger numbers this year, the only region with a double-digit expansion. IATA said an improvement in profitability is also expected to be driven by lower fuel costs. Globally, IATA announced an upward revision of its 2015 industry outlook to a $29.3 billion net profit. On expected revenues of $727 billion, the industry would achieve a four per cent net profit margin. The significant strengthening from the $16.4 billion net profit in 2014 reflects the net impact of several global factors, including stronger global economic prospects, record load factors, lower fuel prices, and a major appreciation of the US dollar, IATA said. ‘All regions are expected to see an improvement in profitability in 2015 compared with 2014. There are, however, stark differences in regional economies, which are also reflected in airline performance. The industry’s fortunes are far from uniform. Many airlines still face huge challenges’, Tony Tyler, IATA’s director general and CEO, said in a statement. IATA said the recent decline in fuel prices was a welcome development. Monsoons & macro data to influence markets New Delhi, June 15 (PTI): Inves t m e n t t r e n d b y for e i g n i n v e s t o r s a n d progress in monsoon will set the tone for the market, which as per experts will open in the positive zone on account of surprise rise in IIP and steady inflation data. Federal Reserve’s meeting during the week will be keenly eyed as investors will look for clues on the timing of an interest rate hike. ‘...market is now likely to focus largely on how the monsoon progresses over the next few weeks in wake of sub-par monsoons predicted by the IMD’, said Hitesh Agrawal, head Research at Reliance Securities. Showing signs of recovery, factory output rose to a two month high of 4.1 per cent in April, driven by manufacturing, but retail inflation too edged up in May amid worries over deficient monsoon. Factory production measured on Index of Industrial Production (IIP) grew by 4.1 per cent in April as against 3.7 per cent in the year-ago period and 2.5 per cent compared with the preceding month. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) which had dipped to a four month low in April, inched up to 5.01 per cent in May. ‘...while the initial reaction to these data points is expected to be positive early next week, it is sustainability of gains which is questionable considering the weak set-up that the Indian stock market is in currently’, Agrawal added. Experts believe one of the key determinants, which markets are eyeing and would play crucial role ahead is the progress of monsoon. On global front, two-day meeting of the US Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled on 16-17 June. ‘Participants expect that the prevalent uncertainty over rate hike in US may ease post this meeting’, said Jayant Manglik, president-retail distribution at Religare Securities. Puri said there is an improvement in the ease of doing business. To a specific question on the scepticism in a section of captains of industry, he said: ‘I do not know about it... Consultancy major Deloitte Global said that women hold about 12 per cent of board seats worldwide while only four per cent of them are at the helm of boards. It noted that many Indian companies have started appointing women directors to their boards, at executive as well as non executive positions. The findings are part of the report titled ‘Women in the Boardroom: A Global Perspective’ released earlier this week. It is based on a data of nearly 6,000 companies spread across 40 countries, including India. In terms of percentage of board seats held by women, India’s score stood at 7.7 per cent while that of China was at 8.5 per cent. The US had a score of 12.2 per cent and that of Germany was 18.3 per cent. The highest percentage of women directors were in Norway (36.7 per cent), followed by France (29.9 per cent), Sweden (24.4 per cent), Italy (22.3 per cent) and Finland (22.1 per cent). However, Japan (2.4 per cent), Brazil (6.3 per cent), Russia (5.7 per cent), Republic of Korea (1.7 per cent) and Indonesia (3.7 per cent) are placed below India. The report said that at six per cent, gender diversity in some of Asia’s leading economies is the lowest compared to other parts of the world. ‘Many Indian companies have started to introduce women directors to their boards. Currently eight per cent of board seats are held by women and three per cent of boards chairs are women’, it said. Big PE deals sealed this year: Thornton New Delhi, June 15 (PTI): Private equity deals witnessed significant uptrend in May with transactions worth $1.24 billion, taking the tally for the first five months this year to $5.85 billion, says a Grant Thornton report. According to the assurance, tax and advisory firm, there were 68 PE transactions worth $1,249 million, up 48 per cent over same month last year when deals worth $846 million were announced. ‘PE activity continues to show encouraging trends, perhaps because of optimism and the fact that overall macro level indicators look positive’, Grant Thornton India LLP partner Prashant Mehra said. The deal value for the month was largely driven by big ticket deals as four large deals were announced during the month each valued at over $100 million. Mehra further said the increasing PE momentum, should get a lift with the government’s key reforms being implemented, which in turn is likely to further boost overall deal activity in the coming months. Meanwhile, in the first five months of this year, PE deals amounted to $5.85 billion, registering an increase of 66 per cent year-on-year with large investments in sectors like IT & ITES, BFS, pharma, real estate and manufacturing. Sector-wise, with more than 50 per cent of total volume, IT & ITES continued to be the preferred sector for PE-deals, while banking and financial services and pharma sectors also witnessed big ticket deals worth over $100 million, the report said. Apax Partners’ acquisition of 20.37 per cent stake in Shriram City Union Finance for $371 million from TPG Capital was termed as the deal of the month by the report. Brazil play Colom- One of the best phases of my career: Ashwin Fatullah, June 15 (PTI): India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, fresh from a five-wicket haul in Ravichandran Ashwin the one-off Test against Bangladesh, is enjoying ‘one of the best phases’ of his career. ‘It certainly feels that I am bowling at my best, it is one of the best phases that I have had. But I have said that in the past as well, so I might surprise myself again. Anyway the learning never stops,’ said Ashwin when asked about his bowling. He troubled the Bangladesh batsmen by generating sharp turn and bounce, ending with with figures of five for 87. Ashwin further said: ‘I think one area I have improved on is that I am bowling better with the Kookaburra ball. Also, I have been trying to use the angles more. Overall, it was a wholesome performance here.’ India had two off-spinners in the eleven with the return of Harbhajan Singh. Does Ashwin feel the competition? ‘As an individual, I just focus on how I can get better rather than thinking about the competition,’ he added. bia on Wednesday, while Peru play Venezuela the following day. ‘It was incredible,’ Peru’s Jefferson Farfan said of the late winner. ‘I think we did very well, we knew that we were facing a great time like Braz i l and we had a chance to at least get a draw but it never happened. Now we need to think of the next match.’ Rondon, the hero Venezuela beat Colombia 1-0 on Sunday, the biggest upset of the tournament so far and their first victory over their South American neighbours in the history of the competition. Southampton, June 15 (AFP): New Zealand’s Kane Williamson was happy to prove elegance and timing still had a place when batting in one-day international cricket with a brilliant century in a three-wicket win over England on Sunday. Victory at the Rose Bowl saw World Cup finalists New Zealand go 2-1 up in the five-match series. The Black Caps, chasing 303 for victory, were wobbling at 36 for two. But a New Zealand record thirdwicket stand of 206 between Williamson (118) and Ross Taylor (110), ultimately proved decisive. There have long been anguished debates about whether advances in bat technology and modern-day power-hitting are making ODI cricket too much of a batsmen’s game. But the 24-year-old Williamson proved the traditional virtues of touch Kane Williamson and timing remain effective in white-ball cricket. Indeed his final scoring shot, in a sublime 113-ball innings which included 12 fours, was a seemingly effortless straight six off David Willey. ‘I don’t think aggressive has to mean slogging or hitting the ball 150 metres,’ said man-of-the-match Williamson, Henriques breaks jaw in on-field collision London, June 15: ever, both Burns and Henriques left the ground ‘conscious and sitting up.’ Australia’s Moises Henriques was knocked unconscious and All-rounder Henriques broke his jaw in a sickening broke his jaw in three placcollision after running into es after he was struck by Surrey team-mate Rory Burns Burns’s knee. I’ve spoken a lot about consistency away from home, I just hope this is the start of it.’ Australia couldn’s have asked for a better Ashes warm-up than their two matches against a young and outclassed Windies side. After winning the first Test inside three days by 10 wickets, the victory at Kingston was just as comprehensive. Needing seven wickets to wrap up the win, the tourists claimed 5 for 56 in the morning session on day four before securing the series midway through the afternoon session. Steve Smith’s first innings 199 earned him man of the match honours while Josh Hazlewood, who took 2 for 18 in the second innings to finish with seven wickets in the match, was named as player of the series. Hazlewood ended the series with 12 wickets at an amazing 8.83 per scalp but Mitchell Starc (10 at 16), Mitchell Johnson (8 at 18.62) and Nathan Lyon (8 at 19.25) also ended the series with ousencounters at the Copa America. The other clash, back in 1979, ended in a goalless draw. Colombia now need a result against Brazil in their next match on Wednesday to avoid almost certain elimination in the first round, while Venezuela take on Peru on Thursday in their next outing. Williamson happy to play his way Now we can talk Ashes, says Clarke Kingston, June 15: The Ashes. The two words Michael Clarke didn’t want his team to speak about during their two-Test tour of the Caribbean. Worried his team might lose their focus and worry more about England than the West Indies, Clarke says he made it crystal clear he didn’t want any talk about the Poms over the past month. Now, having wrapped up a 2-0 series victory over the hapless hosts with a 277-run thrashing inside four days at Jamaica’s Sabina Park, Clarke is officially letting the Ashes build-up begin. ‘I’d be lying to say it hasn’t been in the back of everyone’s mind but the fact we’ve been really disciplined on playing really good cricket in these conditions against this West Indies team is a really good achievement Striker Jose Salomon Rondon scored the only goal of the Group C match in the 60th minute in the central Chilean city of Rancagua. Midfielder Rafael Ocosta swung in a deep cross from the right, Alejandro Guerra headed it back across goal and Rondon buried a firm header into the bottom lefthand corner of the Colombian net. Colombia, tipped as outsiders for the title, poured forward in search of an equaliser and James Rodriguez, Edwin Cardona and Juan Cuadrado all came close but Venezuelan keeper Alain Baroja kept them at bay. Colombia had beaten Venezuela in four of their five previ- averages under 20. Key wickets But replacement Ben Wheeler, like Boult a brisk left-armer, marked his ODI debut with an impressive return of three for 63 in 10 overs. ‘He came in and bowled really well, swung it a little bit and bowled with good pace,’ said Williamson of the 23-year-old Central Districts bowler. Federer looks for Wimbledon boost Halle, June 15: Roger Federer begins his bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title in the familiar surroundings of Halle on Monday admitting he’s still surprised by his staggering success on grass. The 33-year-old needs one more Wimbledon triumph to go clear of Pete Sampras who also won at the All England Club on seven Roger Federer occasions. As he prepares for his assault on an eighth title in Halle, Federer said his career record of 14 grass-court trophies -- more than any other active player -- still surprises him. ‘I never thought that I could ever play so well in my career on grass. It was always a dream to play such good tennis on grass or even be able to play on a grass court,’ he told reporters on Sunday. Safarova pulls out of Birmingham event London, June 15: Losing French Open finalist Lucie Safarova has withdrawn from the WTA grass-court tournament in Birmingham that gets under way on Monday. Safarova pulled out apparently as a consequence of her lengthy Roland Garros exertions. The late-developing Czech burst into the top ten for the Lucie Safarova first time this week following her victory over former French Open champion Maria Sharapova and a thriller with Serena Williams in which she took the world number one to three sets on the red clay of Roland Garros before losing to the American star in the final. Mixed bag CHENNAI ‘Youths need to do more to prevent elders abuse’ MONDAY 15 JUNE 2015 7 SC scraps pre-medical exam Orders re-conduct of test in four weeks Former Madras High Court Judge and patron of Senior Citizens Support Forum Justice T N Vallinayagam released the nationwide report on ‘Elder Abuse - The Indian Youth Speaks Out’ at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai today. NT Bureau Chennai, June 15: A series of events are being organised to mark World Elder Abuse Day today and HelpAge India conducted a programme at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital apart from a signature campaign on prevention of elder abuse. Also, HelpAge recently conducted a nation-wide survey said that around 90 per cent of the youngsters in the city admitted that senior citizens are abused. The survey was conducted in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kanpur and Madurai. Around 200 households were selected from 20 middle and upper middle localities in each city. The survey aimed to find out about the youngsters view on elders abuse and if they were aware of it. It was revealed that 73 per cent of the youth across the country admitted that elder abuse existed. While 42 per cent felt that it is a problem of all developing societies, 24 per cent of the youth perceive the son as abusers the elder blames the son in 59 per cent of cases. He further said that around 60 per cent of the youth are willing to take direct action if they come across abuse. Yet 64 per cent n Chennai and 45 per cent in Hydrabed were not willing to intervene. Toni & Guy opens 55th outlet at Mugalivakkam New Delhi, June 15 (PTI): Over 6.3 lakh students will have to take fresh test as the Supreme Court today scrapped the All India PreMedical Test (AIPMT) 2015 and ordered re-conduct of the examination within four weeks. A vacation bench of justices R K Agrawal and Amitava Roy directed the institutions involved in conduct of the examination to render assistance to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in this endeavour within the stipulated period decided by it. ‘Petitions are allowed. CBSE to hold AIPMT 2015 exam within four weeks,’ the bench said in its verdict. The apex court directed the re-examination in view of large-scale cheating in the test with students getting answers in the exami- nation hall at many places. The court had reserved its order on 12 June on petitions seeking re-conduct of AIPMT 2015 for alleged large-scale irregularities in the exam which was held on 3 May, saying the examination stands vitiated even if one student is being benefited illegally. It had said that CBSE could not be held guilty as such but taking into consideration the past incidents, ‘CBSE ought to have been cognisant of these things.’ CBSE, represented by Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar, had opposed the contentions seeking cancellation of the test, saying, ‘6.3 lakh students cannot be made to take the exam afresh when only 44 students have been found involved in taking benefits through unfair means.’ Earlier, the vacation bench had asked Haryana Police to file a fresh report indicating the number of beneficiaries of the alleged irregularities in the pre-medical examination. It had also asked police to identify as many candidates as possible who had been benefited from the alleged leak. CBSE was to declare the results of AIPMT, taken by over six lakh students, on 5 June. The court had said, ‘The bigger issue is that the sanctity of the examination is under suspicion. We want to be doubly sure that there is no alternative but to order re-conduct of the exam,’ adding that it did not want to take a decision ‘in haste.’ INDOWIND ENERGY LIMITED REGD Office: “KOTHARI BUILDINGS”, 4TH FLOOR, 114, M.G.ROAD, NUNGAMBAKKAM, CHENNAI – 600 034.
