Shane Koyczan
Early in April, Grade 11 students of North
Nova had the rare opportunity to attend a
presentation featuring Shane Koyczan,
award winning Canadian poet, author and
performer.
Shane Koyczan told the story of how he
worked with students on his influential,
anti-bullying, “To This Day” Project video.
The video went viral in early 2013 and has
reached over 14 million views.
Shane is both a writer and spoken word
artist. Students relate well to his genuine
and honest style of writing are drawn in by
his boisterous performance.
We were also fortunate to share the experience with students of Northumberland Regional and Pictou Academy through a live stream. NNEC would like to
take a moment to thank Susan Malcolm and the Aberdeen Health Foundation
for sponsoring Shane’s visit.

Marathon of Respect &
Equality
With the constant messages of terror, violence, economic
strife, etc. in the media, we can become fearful and develop a feeling of anxiety, isolation, even helplessness.
However, together with our friends and families, we have
the ability to overcome fear and to meet the challenges life
presents us with confidence, strength, and love. It is not
that there is nothing to fear, but that fear does not have to
dictate how we react. MORE 2015 is encouraging us all to
stand up and say, “We’re not afraid” to be who we want,
do what we want, and stand up for what we believe!
This year’s run will take place on Thursday, May 7th. The
theme for this year’s event is MORE 2015: We’re Not
Afraid.
The Marathon of Respect and Equality will end at North
Nova Education Centre at approximately 3:00 pm on May
7th. The public is encouraged to support this year’s runners and are invited to attend the ceremony immediately
following the run.

NNEC Sports Report
Rugby
As a result of poor field conditions, our rugby teams have struggled to start their season as
originally planned. The girls team have played just one game thus far in their season beating Hants East by a score of 40-10. The boys have played 4 games to date going 3-0-1 during
that stretch. Both teams are off to the SMU Rugby jamoboree April 24-26. We wish both
teams continued success as they move forward with their season!
Badminton
Our NNEC badminton team participated in the regional championships on April 10-11 in
Antigonish. Although no banners or individual medals were won, the team experienced lots
of successes picking up key wins throughout the tournament. Congrats to all who participated and coach looks forward to a full squad next season!
Canadian Aboriginal
Hockey Championships
Girls Softball
Congratulations to Selena Denny and Tracey
Denny who are away the last week of April competing at the Canadian Aboriginal Hockey Championships.
Our girls softball team has been selected and continue their spring training in the NNEC
gymnasium. The team bolsters an exceptional line-up this year, adding depth at every position during the selection process. Once the fields dry out, the team is built to challenge for
a provincial championship. Good luck ladies!
Table Tennis
The Table Tennis team is 3/4 of the way through their season and after a very
successful district championship, 16 student-athletes have qualified for regional competition! The team is confident they have what it takes to compete at the regionals on April 28th. We wish the team continued success
and good luck at regionals!
Both athletes are on Team Atlantic Female Division and recently played to a 2-2 tie with Eastern
Door and North. They currently hold an 0-2-1
record in their division.
Athletes of the Month
Lacrosse
With close to 40 student-athletes trying out for the team, the lacrosse team have made
final cuts and are poised to get themselves back atop the Northern Lacrosse League. The
team has a strong group of returning players and with the addition of some very strong upand-coming athletes, this year's NNEC lacrosse team is definitely ready to make some
noise! Good luck to the team and we are hopeful the fields will be ready soon!
Boys Slowpitch
Boys slowpitch workouts happen every Monday at 7:30pm and Friday at 5:30pm, both in
the NNEC gymnasium. All boys in grades 9-12 are encouraged to come out. This is the first
year NNEC has ever attempted to field a slowpitch team and we are hopeful we can see
success in our inaugural season. For more information, please see Mr. Hampton.
Track
With over 40 student-athletes training on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, the track
team is preparing to have another great season as they run, jump, and throw themselves
into district and regional competition during the month of May. We are very confident the
team will once again have a great showing and are hopeful the hard work will pay off for
each and every athlete! Good luck and keep training hard!
True Grit Race
On Sunday, May 3rd, NNEC will host it's 2nd annual True Grit Race at
Trenton Park. Participants can chose distances of 5km or 10km on the
loop course. Cost is $15 for students, $30 for adults. To register,
please go to raceroster.com. Students can also register by bringing
their money to Mrs. Lewis. All funds raise will go directly back into
upgrading our athletic facilities and/or meeting the financial needs of our sports teams.

NNEC Boys.
Lindsay Feit is a third year player for the
Gryphons hockey team. This season she helped
her team advance to the NSSAF provincial championship game. In the NSSAF tournaFollow

We are still running a Resiliency Program with three grade 9 classes. This
program will cover topics such as confidence, friendship, self talk, positive thinking, coping skills, and problem solving. We are also introducing
a new mindfulness exercise with each session, in hopes that the students
will use these in the future. We are excited that we will be reaching all of
the grade 9 classes before the end of May.
Also Room 1040 is now open during Lunch breaks on Mondays and Fridays for students to come enjoy quiet activities like board games, reading, puzzles, or to have space to do schoolwork.
Schools Plus was happy to support the Gay Straight Alliance by providing
homemade goodies for a bake sale which raised $123.00!
At North Nova you can find Schools Plus team members located in the
Teen Health Centre on Mondays and Fridays. If we are out of the office
please feel free to contact us via email or text to arrange appointments
or time to chat.
IN CASE OF SCHOOL CLOSURE: Individually scheduled appointments
(including family appointments) will occur as planned; however, group
programming will be cancelled. EXCEPTION: In the case of a system shutdown ALL appointments will be cancelled as the schools are locked and
inaccessible for appointments. This can be checked at www.ccrsb.ca by
clicking on the school closures button. If unable to attend a scheduled
appointment, please call appropriate staff to cancel.
The GSA took part in "Denim
Day" which was a show of
support and awareness of
sexual assault victims and the
issue of victim blaming. The
group wore denim and took
part in a peace walk down
East River Road with community partners. Several members spoke to the
media afterwards and Kayla Petroff was quoted in the paper. Great job
everyone!
The GSA is planning its first ever Pride
Week at NNEC! If you would like to
become involved, drop in to our
meetings on Mondays at lunch in the
Teen Health Centre. We'd love your
input, everyone is welcome!
