PRESS RELEASE Digital Health Live 2015 marks a new era in healthcare Collaboration is key to UAE’s digital health revolution Dubai, UAE, 7th May 2015: Digital Health Live 2015, which closes today at Dubai World Trade Centre, marks a new era in healthcare in the UAE. The world’s first interactive digital healthcare event gave visitors and industry experts a glimpse in to the not-too-distant future, including insights from the world’s major players in digital healthcare and technology and highlighted that collaboration is key to UAE’s digital health revolution. Dr Mohammed Al Redha, director of health data and information analysis department, health policy and strategy sector at the DHA, said: “We were delighted to partner with nuviun for this groundbreaking event. We must now look forward to working collaboratively across our public and private sectors to ensure our prime position as an innovative center for healthcare.” Dr Tamer Shahin, CEO and co-founder of nuviun, said: “The UAE Government and leadership is committed to advance healthcare and showed great support in the next stage of road-mapping the way forward, making the country the ideal benchmark to pioneer new technologies.” The technologies on display at the event – which include an ambulance capable of traversing remote desert terrain to the latest wearable devices - are either currently available or close-to-market, a market set to grow to nearly US$6bn this year1. Dr Shahin highlighted that in the same way healthcare professionals now use technology to work together to assess patients’ needs, the UAE also needs to operate collaboratively to bring these technologies together. “The next stage is to improve collaboration between healthcare organisations, professional and individuals to drive forward the digital health revolution and is key to a truly smart city,” he said. A smart city can improve healthcare efficiency on a macro-level through advancements including tele-medicine, mHealth and big data. The use of telemedicine, for example, where patients receive remote physicians’ check-ups via their usual home computer, could reduce waiting times by 30% according nuviun. Individual wearable devices that display patients’ vitals, such as body mass index and blood pressure, drive preventative care and ensure individuals seek medical advice sooner, thereby alleviating the healthcare system. Dr Shahin said that following the success of Digital Health Live 2015: “The next step, from this solid foundation is to capitalize and leverage the various thought leaders, decision-makers, influencers and investors of the healthcare industry and technologies to advance the developments.” Digital Health Live 2015, which brought together 400 hundred national and international healthcare and technology professionals, was hailed a success by the event’s brainchild and organisers, nuviun. The homegrown company founded two years ago signed a partnership earlier this week with the Dubai Health Authority. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance is the President of the Dubai Health Authority and His Excellency Engineer Essa Al Maidoor is the DirectorGeneral of the DHA. The DHA's aim in Dubai is to provide an accessible, effective and integrated healthcare system, protect public health and improve the quality of life within the Emirate. This is a direct translation of the objectives of the Dubai Strategic Plan 2015 launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Keeping the strategic plan in mind, the DHA's mission is to ensure access to health services, maintain and improve the quality of these services, improve the health status of nationals, residents and visitors and oversee a dynamic, efficient and innovative health sector. In addition to overseeing the health sector for the Emirate of Dubai, the DHA also focuses on providing services through DHA healthcare facilities including hospitals (Latifa, Dubai, Rashid and Hatta), specialty centres (e.g. the Dubai Diabetes Center) and DHA primary health centres spread throughout the Emirate of Dubai. The main pillars of service delivery at DHA health facilities are quality, efficiency, patients and staff. It is our aim to maintain and improve the quality and efficiency of DHA health services. An important aspect of the service delivery strategy is to focus on patients, their needs and satisfaction as well as attract, retain, nurture and support outstanding staff. Prior to the establishment of the DHA, the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), which was established in 1973, was the functioning authority that almost exclusively focused on health service delivery.
