BART Silicon Valley Extension will provide service to the Bay Area’s and
northern California’s largest city, San Jose, the “Capital of Silicon Valley.”
Thirty years ago, the VTA began studying the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit
(SVRT) corridor, The BART Silicon Valley Extension represents the final
link needed to complete the 20-mile gap in the regional rail system around
San Francisco Bay and tie together the region’s three major metropolitan
centers: San Jose, San Francisco, and Oakland.
Overwhelmingly supported by the voters of Santa Clara County, Measure
A Transit Improvement Program , is a ½-cent local-transit sales tax that
would provide funding for 14 transit projects, including the concept to extend BART to the cities of Milpitas, San Jose, and Santa Clara.
The first phase of 10-mile BART Silicon Valley Berryessa Extension is currently under construction
and anticipated to open for revenue service in fall 2017. Phase II of BART Silicon Valley is II of BART
Silicon Valley is the remaining 6-miles into downtown San Jose and over to Santa Clara near Caltrain.
Update of the environmental analysis is currently underway. This second phase includes four stations and
a new maintenance facility and is estimated to cost approximately $4.7 billion. VTA is currently determining the final layout and stations configurations as well as procurement and management strategies.
VTA will use “lessons learned” from implementing the first ten-miles is making these key decisions.
