On Saturday morning, May 16, 2015, students, families and school administrators from six counties gathered at the Double Tree Hotel in Charlottesville to honor African-American male high school scholars. This year’s event was the seventh annual event to feature student scholars from the Charlottesville region. Keynote speaker, Major Victor D. Smith, a career military attorney in the JAG Corps encouraged students to think of several prominent African American leaders and the characteristics that helped to make them successful. Fourteen Orange County High School students were among those recognized as distinguished scholars for having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. They include: Diontre Boyce, Raekwaun Braxton, Desmond Carter, Ahmad Frye, Donavan Jackson, Robert Kerkula, Nathaniel Lloyd, Brandon Martin, J’Air Alexander Rawlings, O'Shun Rosario, Michael Tafari Tamrat , Tyrone Warren, Amir Wright, and Yahmond Wright. In addition to the celebration of academic achievement, scholarships were awarded to thirteen area seniors. Michael Tafari Tamrat and J’Air Alexander Rawlings, OCHS seniors, were among those receiving this honor.
