Tolbert Center Spring 2015 Training Schedule The Oklahoma Assistive Technology Center and the Oklahoma Autism Network are programs of the Tolbert Center for Developmental Disabilities and Autism. We are pleased to offer the following trainings. Finding A Place in the World: Supporting Youth and Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder More children with autism are growing up and often struggle to succeed in the adult world. Research has identified key factors that contribute to greater success in adult life. The presenters will provide information about the current state of transitions from school to adulthood, which key social and adaptive skills need to be addressed, and how to increase collaboration between parents and professionals to facilitate success in adult life for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. April 17, 2015 iPad 101: Secret Features to Use at Home and at School 9:00 am - 3:00 pm OKC 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Parents of children with autism work hard to get through any given day. We will explore ways to make decisions about supports and services for your child with autism and family. During this training, you will learn strategies to focus your time, money, and energy in ways that will be the most effective in achieving your desired outcomes for your child and family. May 8, 2015 Why Does This Have to be So Hard? IEP Training OKC An overview of research about technology use in young children will be discussed including the affects on brain development and use for children with autism spectrum disorder. Participants will leave with ideas for using technology to 1) expand curriculum options, learning opportunities and communication; and 2) strategies for creating structure and boundaries for the use of technology, as well as how to address challenging behavior associated with the use of technology. February 5, 2015 Thinking Beyond Tomorrow When You are in Crisis Today 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Take the mystery out of using the iPad as assistive technology for children with disabilities during this hands-on course. Learn instructional strategies about basic ways to set up and adapt the iPad, research/access apps, evaluate appropriateness of targeted app functions, provide adaptation/positioning interventions for children with physical / visual difficulties, and utilize built-in accessibility features to maximize functional and therapeutic use. March 27, 2015 Maintaining the Balance: Technology OKC OKC / Tulsa 9:30 am - 3:00 pm Developing an IEP that works can be complicated. In this course parents will learn IEP basics, strategies for collaborating with educators, and components of an effective educational plan for students with autism. After three business days prior to the course, 25 percent is deducted from the course fee for administrative costs incurred with registration and printing.
