The Health Benefits of Being Active
* Improve your balance * Reduce falls and injuries * Stay independent longer * Help prevent heart
disease, stroke, osteoporosis, type-2 diabetes, some cancers, and premature death.
Physical activity plays an important role in your health, well-being, and quality of life.
Tips to help you get active
* Find an activity such as swimming or cycling, that you like.
* Minutes count – Spread out the activities into sessions of 10 minutes or more. Increase your activity level 10 minutes at a time. Take part in at least 2.5 hours of moderate- to vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week.
* Active time can be social time – look for group activities or classes in your community, or get
your family or friends to be active with you.
* Walk wherever and whenever you can.* Take the stairs instead of the elevator
It is beneficial to add muscle- and bone-strengthening activities using major muscle groups at least
twice a week. This will help your posture and balance.
Aerobic activity, such as pushing a lawnmower, taking a dance class, or biking to the store, is continuous movement that makes you feel warm and breathe deeply.
Strengthening activity, such as yoga or lifting weights, keeps muscles and bones strong and prevents bone loss. It will improve your balance and posture.
Moderate-intensity aerobic activity makes you breathe harder and your heart beat faster. You should
be able to talk, but not to sing. Examples include walking quickly and bike riding.
Vigorous-intensity aerobic activity makes your heart rate increase quite a bit – you won't be able to
say more than a few words without needing to “catch your breath”. Examples include jogging and
cross-country skiing.

Message From The Chair
My message in this edition is just a simple request: when you have
finished reading your copy of The Bellows, please share it—share it
with a friend, a neighbour, a relative. It is very important that we let
others know who we are and all that we accomplish with just a small
staff and a dedicated Board, and on such a modest budget. Sharing
your copy of The Bellows could help reach someone in our community
who is in need but who is unaware of our programs and services.
And if you pass this issue on to someone who does know about us, you may encourage them
to become a volunteer. We are always happy to hear from new volunteers—the stronger we
are, the more we can help those in need in our community.
So please share... Share a copy of The Bellows, share a smile, share your time and your effort.
That is how we will keep the humanity in everything that we do.

Chair, Board of Directors

The 2014 Volunteer Lunch
The holiday spirit was in the air at the
annual Olde Forge Christmas luncheon
honoring our volunteers, who truly are the
heart of our organization. Many folks
arrived in their holiday best to enjoy the
spirit of the season. Britannia United
Church looked gorgeous with Christmas
trees and glitter and beautifully set tables.
Staff of the Olde Forge and guest servers
from Chartwell Kanata, filled guests’ plates
with a delicious turkey dinner prepared by
Verne Bruce and his capable crew. After
enjoying the wonderful meal, Anita Bloom
and Board of Directors Chair Carol Doyle
both delivered heartfelt thank-yous to all
for their giving their time throughout the
year and for having a positive impact in our
community. The afternoon wrapped up
with fantastic door prizes and fellowship.
We would like to thank our donors who
contributed to our Luncheon:
Chartwell Kanata, Priscilla Lanois, and
Valley Stream, and The Olde Forge.

I have been extremely fulfilled in my position
so far. I get to work alongside an amazing
team, and I get to enjoy all of the vibrant
personalities of our members that I have the

Though I am young, I believe that being
young-at-heart is something to be cherished!.
And now what Effie won’t tell you, but Marsha will!
You probably noticed, if you read Effie’s bio,

THE 2014 OLDE FORGE HOLIDAY BAZAAR
The Olde Forge 2014 Bazaar was once again a huge success, raising over $4,200. We wish to
thank the many people who helped, in advance and on the day, to make our 2014 Holiday Bazaar
