HUMAN TRAFFICKING FORUM
A Public Forum on the disturbing reality of human trafficking in San Diego
will be held at Our Mother of Confidence Church, in Serra Hall, on Monday, May 11
from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. All are welcome.
Human trafficking is a $32 billion-a-year global industry. San Diego ranks
ninth nationwide in top destination areas. Our District Attorney says human trafficking
is a form of modern-day slavery where perpetrators profit from the sexual exploitation
and forced labor of men, women and children.
A panel discussion with Q&A from the audience will include Chief Deputy
District Attorney Summer Stephan, Presiding Juvenile Court Judge Carolyn Caietti, Department of
Homeland Security Special Agent Juan Jacobo, Public Defender Marian Gaston and Marisa Ugarte
from the Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition.
The forum will begin with a short film clip highlighting a human trafficking survivor. Light
refreshments will be served before and after the event. There is no fee. Please come to listen, learn,
discuss solutions and get involved. Invite friends and neighbors. For further information contact
Rob Moscato at 858-453-5785 or call 858-453-0222.
KNIGHTS BLOOD DRIVE
The Knights of Columbus will have their blood
drive on May 3rd in our church parking lot. If you
haven’t donated blood since March 8th, you are
eligible to donate. Please consider making this
life-saving donation.
For your convenience you can use the following link
to schedule your appointment:
https://www.mysdbb.org/Appointment/location.html?did=75477.
If you prefer to call Ed Brancheau at (858) 436-6147 with your schedule preference,
and he would be glad to help.
GRATEFUL THANKS
Here at OMC, we are blessed to have a Bereavement Ministry which
helps families to deal with the loss of a loved one and the planning of
funerals. The ministry is the legacy of Margaret Gurney who recruited
and trained almost all of these wonderful people. They work very hard
and give of their time freely. We are very grateful to have
Elaine Warner, Becky Wirkus, Cindy Lyons and Dorothy Shao.
God Bless you for the help you offer to our parish family in the midst of
their grief. We are thankful to all those who serve at funerals as lectors,
ushers, altar servers, Eucharistic Ministers, cantors and our Resurrection Choir who provide
uplifting music during the funeral liturgy.
SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEK
There will be a special collection next Sunday, after Communion, for the Diocesan Lenten
Initiative. Funds go to benefit Catholic Relief Services and the Missionary churches in South
America. There will be special envelopes in the pews next week. Thank you, in advance, for your
generosity.

PASTORAL DIRECTION
HOME FOR THE ANGELS
"As long as babies are being born,
God has not given up on humanity."
We are privileged to have visiting us and speaking at all
our Masses this Sunday, Good Shepherd Sunday, the founder of the Home for the Angels; a
crisis home responsible for saving more than 450 babies from abortion, neglect, abuse and
abandonment in the streets of Manila.
Lito Atienza, the founder, is a staunch prolife advocate who has been promoting the
culture of life for more than 25 years. He is a civic leader and public servant who has
served as the three term mayor of Manila, a cabinet member as Minister of the Environment
and Natural Resources, National Housing Authority General Manager and is currently a
Congressman of the Buhay/ Life Party.
The Home for the Angels founded on February 14,1995 is a non-government, non-profit organization,
registered and accredited by the Philippines Department of Social Welfare and Development, Securities and
Exchange Commission, committed to protecting and saving lives, from the womb to the tomb, by way of crisis
intervention and services.
Services are sustained by generous volunteers and the support of friends and benefactors. But for the
twenty special babies, at the home at any given time, there is an ongoing battle to generate resources for the
medical services, therapy, milk, diapers, caregivers and staff required for their care.
To help augment much needed funds, an innovative project involving senior
citizens who create jewelry from activated carbon, which promotes good health, was
started to help save more babies by supporting the Home for the Angels. Please give
the Atienzas a warm OMC greeting when you see them at Mass.

ADOPT-A-SENIOR-FRIEND MINISTRY
The Adopt-A-Senior-Friend Ministry is in need of a pool of volunteers
who would be willing to help make a stay-at-home senior's life more
social. Specifically, these volunteers would be called upon for driving
seniors to Masses, to social activities, shopping, library outings, the
monthly Senior Luncheon, or just for going for a walk. Volunteers would
not have to make a weekly commitment, but would merely be on call, if
needed. If you are interested in donating your time to this worthy cause, or
know of a homebound senior who could benefit from this ministry, please
call Lenore Martinez at 858-412-5123.

FORMING A PRAYER TREE
We had a Prayer Tree at OMC several years ago but it dissolved for several reasons. We are in the process of
starting a new one. It will involve praying for someone who has suddenly taken ill or who is going into surgery
or with some other personal emergency or need, who would like to be kept in prayer. People in this group will
be alerted to pray for someone by a telephone call and each person will be assigned two names to call to pass
the information further along. Collective prayer is a great source of grace and comfort for those praying and for
those being prayed for. Please contact Glenn D’Abreo at the Rectory, Mondays through Wednesdays, (858-453
-0222) or text or call him on his cell phone at 858-736-4128, if you would like to belong to this group.
BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP
People grieving the loss of a loved one are invited to join a new bereavement support
group which will be coming together shortly. Meet friendly people experiencing the
same feelings of loneliness, depression, guilt and all the other feelings which go
along with grief, which you are feeling. The grief experience is addressed in discussions centering around the “Stages of Grief”. If you or someone who might benefit
from this ministry please refer them to Lenore Martinez at 858-412-5123.

“God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to feed
on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way, without
bothering about religion. God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from Himself because it is not there.
There is no such thing.” C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity
