Winter 2014 News to Suit You
WINTER 2014 A newsletter from Dress for Success Houston Dear Friends, Each year, I am awed and inspired by the women we serve and our committed supporters who empower Dress for Success Houston (DFSH) to embrace new ideas that break down the barriers many women face to gaining employment—and 2014 is no exception! At The Sky’s the Limit fundraiser in October, we introduced our newest initiative #beyondtheuniform, to support women veterans who often experience isolation, higher than average unemployment and lack a network of support as they transition from military to civilian life. What began as one all-veterans suiting day in June with 20 clients, grew to providing almost 200 female veterans with professional attire, career development tools and a network of peers who understand their challenges. As DFSH introduces new initiatives, our Professional Women’s Group continues to expand, launching three new programs this year: One Year, One Job, to encourage job retention in the newly employed; Legal Literacy, to educate women on their legal rights and obligations; and Dare to Dream, to help women frame career goals and an action plan for future achievement. All this would not be possible without your willingness to join Dress for Success, empowering more than 30,000 women since 1998 to envision a life beyond the suit—and now beyond the uniform— where they are equipped with the selfconfidence and tools for future success, security and stability. Best wishes for a joyful holiday season and blessed New Year! Nancy Levicki President & Co-Founder #BeyondTheSuit Above: Faithful supporters, Chris and Kristy Bradshaw (L) and Rebekah and Gary Reaves (R) co-chaired our largest fundraiser of the year, The Sky is the Limit, on October 18th. Dare to Dream, sponsored by PwC, provides PWG members with guidance to create personal development plans as well as regular one-on-one coaching sessions. Throughout the process, Dare to Dream coaches provide structure, feedback and accountability to support participants in reaching their self-defined goals. W om e n 2 W om e n Mentoring Program F in an cial L i te ra cy B O ecome a mentor! We are seeking professional women with an ability to listen and an interest in helping a woman succeed in work and life. The Women2Women Mentoring Program, sponsored by Wayne Duddlesten Foundation, continues to be one of our most popular PWG programs – both with the mentors and PWG members. If you are interested in learning how to become a mentor, please contact Charie Hopkins at charie@dfshouston.org. Program n October 9th, Houston Ballet’s Lauren Anderson joined the members of PWG in celebrating the accomplishments of this year’s Financial Literacy Program graduates. Anderson congratulated the 19 graduates and inspired everyone with her message of second chances and new beginnings. This life-changing program continues to equip women with the knowledge and skills necessary to make smart and empowered financial decisions. “ PWG Member Feedback I’ve learned how to respect my money, save before bills and pay myself first—all from the Financial Literacy Program. T wo years ago, Sherron found herself at one of the lowest points in her life—unemployed and living in a shelter with her two daughters. Although she felt embarrassed and overwhelmed by her situation, she refused to let it get in the way of doing what she needed to do to help her family. The Women’s Home referred Sherron to Dress for Success Houston where she received not only a suit but also a desperately needed boost of confidence. Soon after, she landed a job and so began the next chapter of her life. Sherron accepted the invitation to join the Professional Women’s Group but, honestly, expected to come to meetings where she would hear things that she probably already knew or that were just plain boring. How wrong “ she was! Sherron met speakers whose wealth of knowledge and experience far surpassed her expectations. She discovered a group of women who share her strength and resiliency, and who give of themselves so that others can succeed. She met her mentor, Melissa, who has become her biggest cheerleader and challenges her to reach beyond what she thinks possible. Sherron graduated from PWG’s Financial Literacy Program this October. Not only has she applied the lessons she learned there to her life, she’s making sure that her daughters see a woman who knows how to manage her money. Earlier this year, Sherron took a job at Memorial Hermann Hospital and loves it. She loves that she is able to make the world a little better by helping people smile in their times of uncertainty. She offers them the same respect and dignity that she received when she first walked through our doors. Supporters, both from the beginning and new to supporting our mission, gathered for an outdoor program honoring female military veterans. Houston’s top female chefs, once again, donated their time, talent and delicious cuisine as part of a moveable feast throughout the building with guests stamping foodie passports at all 14 stations. Dedicated supporters and friends, Kristy and Chris Bradshaw and Rebekah and Gary Reaves collaborated to chair this memorable affair with a boutique silent auction co-chaired by Alissa Maples and Virginia Steppe. This phenomenal event raised $405,000 to support our suiting, pre-employment and career education programs. What has been a special interaction with a client? I will never forget this moment with a DFSH client who was in the salon having her hair colored, her makeup done and I was in the process of cutting her hair. We started talking and she told me her story. She never wore makeup, very rarely had her hair cut and definitely could not afford having her hair colored. When I was finished cutting and blowing her hair dry, she looked in the mirror and started to cry. She said she never thought that she could be this beautiful! That statement went deep into my soul. How do you feel about being named Star Volunteer? I am honored and humbled to be the first male given this honor. Being involved with DFSH from the beginning, experiencing the three moves to larger locations through the years, and, finally, to a building of its own; meeting many different, interesting and wonderful people through the years; the hard work put into making it function like a business and be profitable; and to have been part of all it makes me very proud that I was part of the journey!
