Bogoroch Bogoroch & Associates LLP SUNDAY, JULY 5 - SATURDAY, JULY 11, 2015 THE CURRICULUM The ITAW focuses on learning through participation in simulated trial sessions, coupled with individual and small-group critique by experienced trial counsel and judges. Demonstrations are used, but the focus is on individual participation and performance. The program, including format, materials and teaching methods, is the product of a significant co-operative venture between academic instructors and practising members of the Bench and Bar. The teaching materials are based on those developed by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, and adapted to Canadian court practices and procedures. INDIVIDUAL FEEDBACK AND COACHING Throughout the week-long program, each participant receives individual attention in a small group teaching environment. Groups of eight participants work closely with two (or more) instructors. Participants receive personalized feedback and coaching from their instructors. Performances are also filmed, providing the participants with the opportunity to self-assess. TYPICAL DAILY SCHEDULE* TOPICS INCLUDE: Sunday afternoon: Basic Skills and Case Analysis Monday: Examination-in-Chief/Cross Examination Tuesday: Impeachment Wednesday: Advanced Cross-Examination and Expert Witnesses Thursday: Opening Statements and Exhibits Friday: Closing Arguments Saturday: Courthouse Trials 361 University Ave., Toronto THE COURTHOUSE TRIAL 10:00 - 10:25 Coffee Break The program culminates with a full day trial experience. These trials take place at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice at 361 University Avenue, Toronto, and are presided over by judges and experienced practitioners. The trials provide an important opportunity to reinforce the learning and skills from the workshop. Evening and pre-preparation will be required. The ITAW is ideally suited to lawyers with at least one to five years of legal experience but with limited trial experience. JAMES SECKINGER FELLOWSHIP This fellowship recognizes the outstanding contributions made by Sheila Block and Prof. Seckinger to advocacy across Canada and around the world, and in particular to the ITAW program at Osgoode since its inception 35 years ago. Preference will be given to lawyers from non-profit organizations, and those in remote parts of Canada. JUDGE DAVID STOKES MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP In honour of Judge Stokes, a long-time and highly esteemed instructor in the ITAW, this fellowship will be awarded to a criminal defense lawyer with demonstrated financial need and requiring advocacy training. Program Changes Dates We will make every eff ort to present the program as advertised, but it may be necessary to change the date, location, speakers or content with little or no notice. In the event of program cancellation, York University’s and Osgoode Hall Law School’s liability is limited to reimbursement of paid fees. Cancellations and Substitutions Substitutions of participants are permitted at any time up to and including June 30, 2015 (subject to $150 administration fee). Substitutions are not permitted once the program has started. Cancellations received in writing prior to May 15, 2015 will receive a full refund (less $150 administration fee). Cancellations received between May 16 and June 12, 2015 will receive a credit for the amount paid (less $150 +HST administration fee). The credit may be used by anyone in the same organization and must be used within one (1) year of the date of issue. After June 13, 2015 there will be no refunds or credits.
