OUR SAVIOUR`S LUTHERAN - Our Saviours Lutheran Church
Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church March 29, 2015 2 Sunday of the Passion - Palm Sunday The first and second readings and psalm are the same this Sunday every year: Christ emptying himself of divine power and protection, willingly becoming vulnerable to those who struck him and put him to death. Mark’s passion story begins with an unnamed woman anointing his head, perhaps to proclaim him Messiah, and Jesus saying she has anointed him beforehand for burial. Gathering - In the gathering area we hear of Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem - L: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! C: Hosanna in the highest! *PROCESSIONAL GOSPEL L: The holy Gospel according to Mark, the 11th chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel is read. L: This is the good news. C: Praise to you, O Christ. *BLESSING OF PALMS L: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. L: Let us pray… *PROCESSION1 WITH PALMS Follow the worships leaders in a ritualized procession suitable for weather conditions. Please join us in singing: “Jesus is coming – pave the way with branches – Jesus is coming – Hosanna!” 2 – Homes for the homeless… 3 – Peace for the war-torn… 4 – Release for the captives… 5 – Debts are forgiven… As we process into the sanctuary: 1 The PROCESSION has been a liturgical (worship-related) activity throughout most of Church history. The procession recalls Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) and his procession to Calvary (the “way of the cross": Passion Sunday and Good Friday), but is not limited to these two events in the life of Christ. Bringing the gifts to the table at the offertory is a procession. Liturgical dance is a form of procession. Often choirs process. People process. Procession can be an act of solemnity (e.g., a funeral procession) or an act of celebration (e.g., a procession to Baptism). On this Sunday of Palm and Passion the procession of solemnity and celebration face off. Jesus ironically enters Jerusalem triumphantly, like a king might, but the story shifts painfully to his eventual procession to the cross. We are invited to join in this tension, keeping in mind that the ultimate procession from death to life is yet to come! 3 “You Are Holy” *HYMN #525 (Once – All together; Repeat in canon window side begins, piano side enters at #2) L: C: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest! *PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray. Sovereign God, C: you have established your rule in the human heart through the servanthood of Jesus Christ. By your Spirit, keep us in the joyful procession of those who with their tongues confess Jesus as Lord and with their lives praise him as Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated.) *GREETING L: The grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ, the embodied love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. 4 Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. - Quiet reflection – FIRST READING Isaiah 50:4-9a GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning GOD wakens— wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; the one who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? L: Word of God, Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God! 5 PSALM 31:9-16 All – Refrain; Cantor - Verses SECOND LESSON Philippians 2:5-11 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, although being in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but relinquished it all, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death— even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Sovereign, to the glory of God. L: Word of God, Word of Life. C: Thanks be to God! (Please remain seated.) 6 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Mark 14:1 – 15:47 Spark Story Bible pages 462-475 THE LITURGY OF THE PASSION During the reading we sing: “Stay With Me” 7 *HYMN OF THE DAY “There in God’s Garden” *CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS L: Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who brings us out of captivity into freedom, out of the wilderness into the promised land, out of death into life. C: Amen. L: C: L: C: L: C: Holy God, Maker of all Have mercy on us. Jesus Christ, Servant of the poor Have mercy on us. Holy Spirit, Breath of life. Have mercy on us. L: Let’s tell the truth about what’s going on in and around us and our need for God’s mercy. Silence is kept for reflection. L: I confess to God and in the company of all God's people that my life and the life of the world are broken by my sin. C: May God forgive you, Christ renew you, and the Spirit enable you to grow in love. Amen. C: We confess to God and in the company of all God's people that our lives and the life of the world are broken by our sin.
