Parktown Boys recently struck gold, showing we are the school of choice for culture, when Gabriel Matthews, Tristan Wilkinson and Zidaan Habib won the first place overall in the Inaugural South African round of the World Scholars’ Cup, However, Parktown Boys other two teams fared excellently too, coming third and fifth overall – meaning that teams from Parktown Boys made up 60% of the top five teams in the competition! The third-placed group was Mokgeseng Ramaisa, Micah Bwanali and Adam Vanker, with Muhammad Jhetam, Ronan Morris and Mishaylen Lutchman’ team placed fifth overall in the competition. The World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) presented the boys with unique challenges over two days of competition, with the Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, the gruelling Scholar’s Challenge and fast-paced Scholar’s Bowl targeting the skills of the nine Parktonians entered. The tournament was held at the Bishop Bavin School in Bedfordview. Other achievements by the boys included those of Mokgeseng Ramaisa, Adam Vanker and Micah Bwanali, all of whom were placed second in the Scholar’s Bowl, and third overall in the Best Team Debate. In addition our team being placed first overall, the boys also collected numerous trophies, and silver and gold medals on the day, and all three teams qualified for the Global Rounds to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, between 22-26 June this year. Adds Director of Culture Mr Andre de Wilzem: “The WSC Global Round will bring together 2, 500 leading scholars from over 45 countries, with the opportunity to earn pre-qualified berths at the Final Conference (the Tournament of Champions) at Yale University in November 2015. This is indeed a challenge for our Parktown boys! The biggest need at present is to provide adequate sponsorship for several of our boys in order to allow them to represent Gauteng at this most prestigious event in June. Should any company or individual be willing to sponsor the teams, please contact me, Mr André de Wilzem at 011 642 4531/2 (school number), or at the following e-mail address: dewilzema@parktownboys.com.” Check out the school website www.parktownboys.co.za for news of a great pizza promotion to help the boys!
