Third Grade Summer Reading Program John F. Pattie Elementary School The purpose of the PWCS Summer Reading Program is to encourage students to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills. Student participation in the program is voluntary. Students who choose to participate in the program are required to complete a minimum of three books. Students participating in the program in Third Grade will complete a list of books read. The documentation is to include the name of the author, the title of the book, and a parent or guardian statement that the student has completed the reading. Third Grade students who participate in Prince William County Public Library's Summer Reading Program, the Public Library documentation will apply. Students in Third Grade who read a minimum of three books will receive an extra “A” (100) for each book completed, for a total of three. The summer reading documentation will be submitted by the student by the end of the first week of school. The following titles are suggestions for summer reading. Other books selected by the student with guidance from a parent/guardian and/or librarian may be used. Participation in the PWC Public Library Summer Reading Program and its documentation is also acceptable. All titles are available through PWC Library system. Third grade curriculum titles available at PWC Library-animals, geography, biographies, earth science, history, simple machines, soil, habitats, etc Bridgestone Books Non-Fiction Series Cox, Lynne Elizabeth, Queen of the Seas 2014 Relates the story of an elephant seal named Elizabeth that was transferred from the Avon River in Christchurch, New Zealand, to the ocean, but found her way back to the city. The Trouble with Chickens 2011 A hard-bitten former search-and-rescue dog solves a complicated missing chicken case. Part of the JJ Tully Mystery series Various Mercy is the main character in this beginning chapter book series. Mr. and Mrs. Watson treat her as a regular member of their family. 2008 An adaptation of the traditional tale, featuring a sleeping, snoring princess who is rescued by a prince after being cursed by a bad fairy. Hartland, Jesse How the Sphinx Got to the Museum 2010 Follows the history of the sphinx of Pharoah Hatshepust from its creation in ancient Egypt to New York City's Metropolitan Museum. Various Numerous topics including animals, language arts, geography, biographies, weather, habitats, solar system, etc. Zeraffa Giraffa 2014 Based on a true story, the Pasha of Egypt gives a baby giraffe to King Charles X of France as a gift. Atir, a servant boy, is chosen as Zeraffa Giraffa's loyal keeper. The most astonishing is the fact that Zeraffa walked 550 miles before arriving in Paris. The people fall in love with this never seen before animal. Jenkins, Emily The Whoopie Pie War 2013 Hank Wolowitz and Inkling, his invisible bandapat friend, try to save the family ice-cream store's business from a whoopie pie food truck parked outside. Jenkins, Steve What Would You Do With a Tail Like This? 2008 See the different ways animals use their ears, eyes, mouths, noses, feet, and tails. Find out other interesting and unusual animal facts in Steve Jenkins’ books. Kittinger, Jo Rosa’s Bus 2010 The history of the bus that Rosa rode when she refused to give up her seat to a white man from Montgomery, Al., to the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mi. The Adventures of a South Pole Pig 2013 Flora, the pig, ditches the sedentary life on the farm for an adventure in Antarctica, where she escapes the knife and lives her dream of pulling a sled with a team of dogs. Each is told in verse in a spread or two and is accompanied by astonishingly intricate watercolor paintings. 2009 O’Malley, Kevin Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude 2009 Bass Reeves was a former slave who was recruited as a deputy United States marshal in the area that was to become Oklahoma. He was recruited based on his ability to communicate with the Native Americans. In writing a fairy tale for school together, a girl imagines a beautiful princess whose beloved ponies are being stolen by a giant, and a boy conjures up the muscular biker who will guard the last pony in exchange for gold. Osborne, Mary Pope Magic Treehouse Series Various Some of the titles in series supporting the 3rd grade curriculum include Hour of the Olympics, Stallion By Starlight (Ancient Greece); Vacation Under the Volcano (Ancient Rome); Mummies in the Morning (Ancient Egypt); Day of the Dragon, Dragon of the Red Dawn (Ancient China.) Non-fiction companions support each subject; these are on higher reading levels. Pilegard, Virginia The Emperor’s Army, The Warlord’s Beads. The Warlord’s Alarms, The Warlord’s Puzzles. The Warlord’s Kites Sit-in: How Four Friends Stood Up By Sitting Down Various These unique math tales, full of adventure, often show the elements of fairy tales. Some titles include the histories of Chinese inventions. 2010 Tells about the Greensboro, North Carolina, sit-in at the lunch counter at Woolworth's as a protest against segregation to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the event. So You Want to Be an Explorer? 2005 So you want to be an explorer? What does it take? Find out in this book about some of the greatest explorers the world has ever known. In many of the books Geronimo travels back in time to a historical event. Also try the Thea Stilton series. Viorst, Judith Lulu's Mysterious Mission 2013 When Lulu's parents go on vacation, the formidable Ms. Sonia Sofia Solinsky comes to babysit and Lulu behaves as badly as possible to get her to leave until Ms. Solinsky reveals her secret.
