Memorial Band & Choir Concert
December 4-9, 2016
Perform with bands & choirs
from the United States and
Japan to honor the men
and women who gave their
lives for our freedom on
December 7, 1941.
THE SETTING
THE CITY :: Honolulu, Hawaii
Hawaii is a major tourist destination and Honolulu, situated on the island of
Oahu, is the main gateway into Hawaii. The city has been the capital of the
Hawaiian islands since 1845 and gained historical recognition following the
attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan near the city on December 7, 1941. Highlights
of a visit to Honolulu are Waikiki Beach, one of the most famous beaches
in the world, as well as a climb to the summit of nearby Diamond Head, a
volcanic tuff cone that gives visitors a panoramic view. Honolulu gives visitors
diverse natural scenery, a warm tropical climate, and spectacular beaches
along with gracious people who welcome the world to their paradise.
THE EVENT :: 75th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor
The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise military strike conducted by the
Imperial Japanese Navy against this United States naval base located west of
Honolulu on the morning of December 7, 1941. The attack would mark the
United States’ entry into World War II. Pearl Harbor is a lagoon harbor on
the island of Oahu. The 75th anniversary of the attack will be remembered
with a mass band performance featuring bands from both the U.S. and Japan
showing that they can work together as musicians in a performance that seeks
to inspire a world filled with love and peace.
THE VENUE :: Pearl Harbor
The USS Battleship Missouri Memorial in Pearl Harbor will be the backdrop for
the 75th Anniversary Pearl Harbor Mass Band Performance. The USS Missouri
Memorial is dedicated to preserving the ship’s legacy as the site of Japan’s
unconditional surrender to the Allied Forces on September 2, 1945, ending
World War II. It honors the commitment of all of the men and women past
and present who served our great country. The Mass Band of American and
Japanese musicians will present to the world, “A Gift of Music!”
