Pine Forest United Methodist Church 400 Woods Avenue Dublin GA 31021 478.272.2441 Reaching out and sharing God’s love. May 14, 2015 “DID YOU DO YOUR BEST?” Walker Dixon Warner Livingston Kaleb McLeod Tanner Peters Mason Purser Christian Reeves Alex Shores Robert Strickland Taylor Tanner Annabelle Veal Morgan White “… Do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion; they will be life for you…” Proverbs 3:21-22, NIV In his book, Ordering Your Private World, Gordon McDonald tells the following story regarding Admiral Hyman Rickover and former President, Jimmy Carter. For many years, every officer aboard a nuclear submarine was personally interviewed and approved by Rickover. Those who went through the interviews usually came out shaking in fear, anger, or total intimidation. Among them was Carter who, years ago, applied for service under Rickover. This is his account of a Rickover interview: “I had applied for the nuclear submarine program, and Admiral Rickover was interviewing me for the job. It was the first time I met him, and we sat in a large room by ourselves for more than two hours, and he let me choose any subjects I wished to discuss. Very carefully, I chose those about which I knew most at the time—current events, seamanship, music, literature, naval tactics, electronics, gunnery—and he began to ask me a series of questions of increasing difficulty. In each instance, he soon proved that I knew relatively little about the subject I had chosen. He always looked right into my eyes, and he never smiled. I was saturated with cold sweat. Finally he asked a question and I thought I could redeem myself. He said, ‘How did you stand in your class at the Naval Academy?’ Since I had completed my sophomore year at Georgia Tech before entering Annapolis as a plebe, I had done very well, and I swelled my chest with pride and answered, ‘Sir, I stood fifty-ninth in a class of 820!’ I sat back to wait for the congratulations—which never came. Instead, the question: ‘Did you do your best?’ I started to say, ‘Yes sir,’ but I remembered who this was and recalled several of the many times at the Academy when I could have learned more about our allies, etc.” “I was just human. I finally gulped and said, ‘No, sir, I didn’t always do my best.’ He looked at me for a long time, and then turned his chair around to end the interview. He asked one final question, which I have never been able to forget—or to answer. He said, ‘Why not?’ I sat there for a while, shaken, and then slowly left the room.” As followers of Jesus Christ, the One who gave His best for all of us—even at the expense of His own life—can we afford to give Him less than our best? We are still imperfect human beings who will fail and falter at times? Yet our goal should always be to do our very best when it comes to the way we love and serve the Lord, and others. “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23-24, NIV). We will center on a lesson - for example prayer - for 6 - 8 weeks. During that time, the children will all attend Bible study, participate in a game time, and then comes the fun! They will choose an activity that they might want to get involved with. Some examples might be outdoor skills, painting, photography, cooking, wood working, etc. We want adults who are passionate about different hobbies to help us with these activities. During these activities, you will incorporate the focus lesson - for example if the kids were doing photography during the time we are learning about prayer, they might create a photo prayer journal. If you have any questions, please see me. There will be a form in this Sunday’s bulletin for you to note areas that interest you that you would like to help the children with. Just because you say you have a passion in an area does not automatically sign you up to teach but gives us an idea on who to turn to for help. MUSIC NOTES… from Mary Christmas is in the air! Yes, I'm listening to Christmas and other new music and making plans for when choirs return in August. Did you know that we start Christmas music as soon as we start practicing this fall? We work on the music 2-3 months, then the month prior we have the opportunity to polish and practice in the sanctuary. This allows our wonderful musicians to sing with the peace and presence of mind because they know how it will sound and what to expect. If you've been thinking about singing in choir, we have two brief rehearsals over the summer complete with lunch---June 14 and July 12. After the 11:00 worship, we'll have a light lunch and practice for 6075 minutes. Join us and see how much fun it can be to make new friends and have something to sing about! Our praise band is always glad to know about people in our congregation who might play an instrument. Year around, but especially in the summer, we have folks on vacation or on Mission trips and need musicians who can play and/or sing to help us out. Any instrument is helpful but especially guitar, keyboard, drums or bass. If you're interested, please let me know so we can work you into our schedule! Please pray for the students and chaperones who will be headed to Cincinnati on May 30 for our annual Music and Mission trip. I'll list the people next week but pray that God will help us as we sing and work, that there would be a spirit of unity and praising God as we prepare! Golden Notes: Please meet me in the sanctuary at 8:20 this Sunday morning to sing. Youth News …. from Jared Bowling Sunday afternoon. Bring money and meet at the Bowling Alley at 5pm. We will bowl 2 games. Prayer breakfast is over until the Fall. Be sure to check your emails for the summer calendar that went out. It is also available on the church website and youth Facebook page.
