mission is to promote personal financial literacy. This year the

National Volunteer Week celebrates ordinary people doing extraordinary things to
improve communities across the nation. The Library extends heartfelt thanks to all
of our wonderful volunteers who share their time and talents so generously. Their
willingness to help in so many ways brightens and enriches everyone’s days. If you
see a volunteer in the Library, identifiable by their name badge, please stop to thank

Going Native in the Midwest

Award-winning Illinois Master Gardener Colleen
Graudins will teach us which wildflowers
homeowners should consider for their Midwest
gardens, from a seasonal bloom perspective (spring
to autumn) and non-blooming, multi-seasonal

recommendations will also be discussed. This

Adler Planetarium's Michelle Nichols discusses
the ISS, a cutting-edge Earth-orbiting
laboratory where astronauts from all over the

science research benefit humanity on Earth?

District 214 Community Education Travel Manager
Linda Kerr presents a picturesque slideshow tour of
Poland. From the rebuilt city of Warsaw to the tragic
history of Auschwitz to the wonder of the Black
Madonna and the beauty of the underground salt
mines, Poland is a country worth discovering. A prize
raffle will be held. R
England Coast to Coast
Tuesday, April 28, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Join avid trekker John Lynne for a slide presentation of
his 200-mile walk across northern England. Take in the
scenery, adventure, and sociability of the famed Coast
to Coast Path including the Lake District, various
places in Yorkshire where Downton Abbey is set, and
a side trip to England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike. R

Before Kindergarten
The 1000 Books Before
Kindergarten Challenge
encourages all families and
caregivers to read at least 1000
books with their young children
before they enter Kindergarten.
Reading to preschool age children
builds vocabulary and language
skills, helping to prepare them for
Kindergarten. In as little as 15
minutes a day, families can build
the skills for future school and life
success. Register in the Youth
Services Department and earn
prizes along the way!

Learn valuable defensive driving
skills and refresh your memory of
the rules of road in this eight hour
course presented by AARP
volunteers. After completing the

The 8th annual Low Vision Fair, sponsored by the North Suburban Library
Low Vision Consortium: Glenview, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Park
Ridge, Prospect Heights, Skokie and Vernon Area Public Libraries, will
feature glaucoma screening by the North Shore Eye and Vision Center,
assistive technology vendors, supportive service agencies, and diabetic
retinopathy screening sponsored by the Park Ridge Lions Club. Admission
is free; no registration is required. Refreshments will be served.
Free round trip transportation is offered by the Prospect Heights Park District,
847-394-2848 or phparkdist.org. Register to reserve a seat on the bus by
Wednesday, April 15.
