The Coto de Ximonde, one of the most important salmon preserves in Galicia, emerges from these lifegiving waters and nowadays is home to a fish breeding and rearing station. With animal milk, an exceptional cheese is made, and together with the cream of the fruit, what a delicacy! Even better if accompanied with traditional sweetmeats made with the flour from the local mills. Throughout the year, Vedra offers a wide range of cultural, social and sporting activities. You could discover beautiful spots along its walking trails; canoe down the different rivers; relax in the rest areas or go shopping for craftworkall good reasons not to miss this charming corner of the world. Wine presses and stills complete our recipe, giving us fine liqueurs, firewater and wines, with a guarantee of origin from the Rias Baixas and some of the best fiestas around. River Pereiro walking trail The characteristic microclimate of this valley makes it ideally suited to agriculture, as reflected in the fields, vegetable gardens and vineyards. Noblemen and lords from times past commissioned beautiful gardens which continue to delight visitors today. Camellias play an especially important role and their many varieties brighten up the dark hours of winter. Thanks to all of the above, our lands are known as the vegetable and flower garden of Compostela. Fish such as salmon and trout, amphibians or riverside trees make up the beautiful countryside of this valley which can be enjoyed at any time of the year. This natural area is protected by the Red Natura 2000 network. In addition to its religious buildings, Vedra is also famous for the numerous pazos (stately homes) and casas grandes which served as second residences for the nobility. The most outstanding examples are the pazos of Ortigueira and Santa Cruz de Ribadulla, the latter declared a Cultural Heritage Site. The stately homes of Ximonde, Guimaráns, A Costa and Vista Alegre are also worth a visit. There are many ways to enjoy your free time in Vedra; outdoor activities and nature trails are one of the best ways to appreciate its countryside. We sow pulses, fruit and vegetables; breed pigs, cows, rabbits and hens; we produce top quality products which we cook for discerning palates. tourist map-guide legendary firewater With the strength of fire and the warmth of its people, this magic potion - claimed to have curative and revitalizing properties- has been distilled since time immemorial. Many are the historical ways that have converged in Vedra since days gone by. Vestiges of roman times, such as the Miliario de Calígula, provide evidence that the IV Roman Military Road, which linked Brácara (Braga, Portugal) and Astúrica (Astorga, Spain), passed through Vedra. A Ponte Ulla gives access to the penultimate stretch of the Vía de la Plata, the most used of the various Ways of Santiago. This path, a prolongation of an ancient Roman road, that linked Compostela with the south of the Iberian Peninsula, facilitated the pilgrims´journey to the Apostle´s tomb. One of the most succulent and aromatic wines in the region is produced here in Vedra, fruit of our vineyards and the ancestral wisdom of our vine growers. cheese Green fields and a long tradition of dairy farming give rise to a mild cheese that has become a hallmark of the Ulla valley. fruits of the land Thanks to the fertile soil and the sheltering effect of the Pico Sacro, a wide range of high quality fruit and vegetables are grown in Vedra´s vegetable gardens and orchards. These provide prime ingredients for the tasty dishes that will satisfy the most discerning palates. All year long, but especially in the summer, numerous celebrations are held in the different parishes of Vedra. Religious feast days and processions honour the saints of the local churches and chapels, while other fiestas mark the different solsticies. Without a doubt, the most important fiestas are the ones where local products can be sampled, such as the Wine Festival, the Firewater Festival and the Pigs´Ear Festival. air of time paths with a past fiestas - non-stop party wine presses fire of taste water of life Engineering works and ethnographic elements reflect the lives of the people of Vedra and the waterrelated architecture. From bridges that cross the rushing river Ulla to irrigation dams; thirst-quenching springs to communal clotheswashing areas where the womenfolk used to meet up; or flour mills for milling the grain. The latter can be observed in the Área de Interpretación dos Muíños (Water Mills Interpretation Centre). This impressive group of restored mills and water channels formed an important part of previous generations´lives, who would pass the time while waiting for their turn at the mill telling stories, dancing and singing. land with history elemental vedra english Vedra belonged to the bishopric of Iria until the 10th century, at which point it came under the wing of the Diocese of Compostela. Thanks to this, the Ulla valley was able to benefit from the skill of the master stonemasons who worked in the capital, and consequently left their mark on the parish temples. water-related architecture There are many ways to discover the history of this area - through its nature, culture, architecture, ethnography and gastronomy; all part of a land with a past which looks to the future. leisure time cradle of pazos currents of the Ulla Vedra can be defined in terms of the four elements; with the water of the river Ulla, the land of its valley, the air sheltered by the Pico Sacro (Sacred Peak) and the fire in the warmth of its people. elemental vedra vedra elem ental Casa dos Peóns CENTRO DE DINAMIZACIÓN E PROMOCIÓN MUNICIPAL TOURIST INFORMATION OFFICE tel: 981 512 482 / 669 450 804 casadospeons@concellodevedra.com The Ulla area is also famous for its Carnival celebrations, where horseback-mounted "Generals" and "Correos" ride around the different parishes accompanied by colorful floats and locals in fancy dress. Vedra is renowned for being home to master firework makers and so it is no surprise that the beginning of all festivities is heralded by a series of loud firecrackers (visible from afar), and the end by magnificent fireworks.
