Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS) A one
Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS) A one-day learning conference for 6th-8th grade girls Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS) was formed by the University of South Alabama Women In Science Organization to foster young women’s interests in the study of math and science throughout middle and high school. Since 2001, a group of dedicated professionals have conducted GEMS at the University of South Alabama so middle school girls can receive hands on experience from a wide variety of professionals in the fields of science, math and engineering. Your help is needed to present a workshop. Why should I help? On average, 100 girls attend GEMS. The number is limited only by the number of workshops available. This is why your participation is important. We want to reach as many students as possible! As a professional in your field, you are the best person to promote your field as a career option. You can do this by conducting a fun, hands-on workshop and use your time with the girls to tell them all of the great things about your job! Workshops last approximately 55 minutes and typically look like this: Greeting and opening introduction about your field: 5 minutes Question and answer session: 5 minutes – just to get the girls started Exercise or experiment: 35 minutes Closing questions and answers: 5-10 minutes We encourage you to provide handouts and take-home information so the girls can continue to consider your field or science as a future career option. Remember, this is an opportunity to promote yourself, your company, and your career! What do I do? Select a fun, hands-on workshop that engages the students in a math- or science-related activity. Check out the attached presenter form from the last GEMS to get an idea of the types of workshops that are typically offered. If you need ideas for a workshop, please call Angela Nocera (832) 490-6722 for additional information. Select fun, engaging assistants to help you run your workshop. Or, let us know how many volunteers you will need to help you run it. Complete the presenter information form and return it to the GEMS workshop committee as soon as possible. The information you give us is used in the registration brochure. Two workshops will be presented during the day on March 21, 2015 so please be prepared to present your workshop twice.
