MANAGING DIRECTOR ELBA WORKS Appointment Brief March 2015 INTRODUCTION from Liam Kane, Chief Executive, ELBA Thank you for your interest in the post of Managing Director at ELBA Works. ELBA recently completed an 18 month long implementation of the key findings from its strategic review, undertaken in 2013. The last key element of the significant changes is the incorporation and launch of a new, operational delivery and consultancy providing trading subsidiary reporting to the main ELBA charity. Known as “ELBA Works”, it will be contracted by the charity to deliver and develop all of the ELBA initiatives in our Community Development and Education Works programmes. We need a charismatic Managing Director to lead and inspire the 22-strong team. With more than 100 City and Canary Wharf members and 250+ Community and Education partners to retain and service, you will need good, strong account management and organisational skills, as well as a passion for East London and its diverse, vibrant and engaging Community. Alongside London Works Limited, a fellow ELBA trading subsidiary, which delivers all ELBA’s employment programmes, ELBA Works will report to the Trustees of the ELBA charity. This is a senior role with excellent opportunities for programme expansion and development, as ELBA reshapes and responds to the changing CSR market place. Kane Chief Executive March 2015 2 Managing Director | March 2015 ABOUT US ELBA connects business with community organizations in the UK’s most deprived boroughs: every year, thousands of volunteering opportunities, hundreds into City & Docklands jobs – people from all walks of life connected to each other and to opportunities in east London. ELBA exists to promote and improve the efficiency of charities and community organisations, particularly those active in the boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Greenwich, Barking and Dagenham and Waltham Forest as well as the wider east London area , and to support them in the direct furtherance of their respective charitable and other objectives. We achieve this by encouraging private and public sector co-operation and acting as a focus for others in the economic and social improvement and development of the east London boroughs, facilitating the improvement and development of the physical and cultural environment of the boroughs within which we operate, providing opportunities for members to devise and implement local employment initiatives, and by playing a leading role in the training, educational and enterprise requirements across the footprint of the area within which we now operate. 3 Managing Director | March 2015 ELBA Works ELBA Works will be a wholly owned operating subsidiary of the main ELBA charity which funds the delivery of its charitable objectives through the subsidiary company. ELBA receives its income from members and grant funders and then funds the community and education actions, delivery and operations of ELBA Works by means of grant awards. Community Involvement Each year ELBA’s community team helps over 12,000 employee volunteers to support local organisations in east London, through a range of programmes including: Skilled volunteering – business skills support Community organisations often need business skills to support their growth, ranging from a one-off skills workshop to longer term trusteeship opportunities. ELBA provides: • Skills-based volunteering: putting the expertise of employee volunteers, individually or in small groups, to work in strengthening community organisations, supporting strategy, business planning, HR, IT, comms and much more ABOUT US • Mentoring & coaching: using the business experience of employee volunteers to support senior public and voluntary sector staff in developing and gaining fresh perspective • Board builders: becoming a trustee can be the ideal way for senior business people to share their business and finance skills with community groups without needing to be out of the office too frequently Practical volunteering – team challenges Supporting school governors, staff & students Our Business Action Group for Schools (BAGS) initiative sees senior business leaders working hand in hand with school leadership teams to:- address each school’s individual needs- define strategy- deliver volunteer activities that support governors, staff and students. The aim is to develop confident, employable young people, and enhance the knowledge of staff. Sponsored by KPMG and the L&Q Trust, BAGS is currently in operation in Newham and Waltham Forest. Each of ELBA’s member companies gets a number of free team challenges as part of their membership package each year. A great team building opportunity, team challenges are usually half a day or a whole day of hands-on activities out in the community for a group of employees. Tasks can include: • Environmental work on city farms, gardens, school playgrounds, nature reserves and waterways, e.g. clearing vegetation, building fences and pathways, landscaping gardens • Painting and decorating community centres, hostels, offices and schools • Employability days, which may include running CV workshops, helping with interview techniques, and hosting tours of your company’s offices. Education Whatever the motivation of our partners, whether it be to help raise the aspirations of a school student, help a graduate into work, or introduce someone to a potential career, employee volunteers can make a huge impact. ELBA’s Education Works team supports 13,000 beneficiaries in 30 schools, colleges and universities in east London, through a number of tailored interventions: Supporting undergraduates and graduates In higher education, ELBA member companies support local undergraduates and graduates through a range of activities. ELBA’s higher education programme provides employee volunteers with opportunities to drive social mobility and develop students’ employability skills through: • Higher Education Mentoring • ELBA’s Career Capital & Mock Interview Week • CV Surgery 4 Managing Director | March 2015 ABOUT US School mentoring ELBA’s schools Mentoring Works programme for Years 10 and 12 has matched over 4,000 students with City and Canary Wharf mentors since 1996. The programme matches a business professional and a secondary school student for fortnightly sessions at the mentor’s workplace. Students gain exposure to the world of work, set their sights on a career goal and build self-confidence. The programme has been expanded into Islington schools under its new name, Mentoring Works. Achievements & Performance After the excitement and highlights of the Olympic year, the following years were always going to be challenging and would mean that ELBA would have to work harder to match those achievements, which included engaging over 20,000 young people in a single year. However, ELBA has risen to the challenge, our volunteer numbers are up, we’ve helped a growing number of people into work and provided valuable information and guidance to an even larger number who have sought our support. We have also worked hard to remain relevant to the needs of our funders and to the individuals and communities that benefit from our work, providing ever more in-depth reporting, impact assessment, skills based volunteering and innovation leading to even more measurable community and people development Importantly we have also changed the way that we do things with our programmes now working across the whole ELBA area, rather than borough wide, so that we can readily meet members’ desire to be active in any area, removing the old borough-based wiring. 5 Managing Director | March 2015 Acknowledgment ELBA is deeply grateful to our members and for their much valued enthusiasm and support for our work. ROLE PROFILE Title Managing Director, ELBA Works Reports to Chief Executive, ELBA Charity Salary c.£65,000 per annum Hours 35 hours per week, some evening work is required Annual Leave 28 days per annum plus 8 public holidays Job Purpose You will have the challenging task of heading up ELBA’s Community Involvement and Education programmes. This will involve managing a senior group of four Programme Directors (PDs) with their respective teams totalling some 20 people representing almost half of ELBA’s entire staff; designing and initiating new and better community intervention programmes and being responsible for the management and development of the Challenge:ELBA team. Main Responsibilities • Develop annual business plans in collaboration with the Community and Education Programme Directors and the respective Forum chairs where applicable • Recruit and train suitably qualified programme and project managers to deliver the agreed programmes • Mentor and motivate the Programme Directors and Community teams, including the Challenge:ELBA team, as well as the Education Works team • Monitor and manage the teams to ensure the achievement of their respective Business Plans • Lead on the conception, initiation and implementation of community programmes, including refreshing the long established ELBA embedded Project Manager Model • Deliver12,000+ corporate volunteering opportunities each financial year • Identify and standardise best practice within Location Docklands, East London, E14 • Undertake team members’ annual/bi-annual appraisals • Lead on, and support the efforts of the ELBA Business Development Director on the relationship management of all ELBA members; performed in agreement with and in conjunction with the MD of the London Works employment team • Lead on the promotion, sale and implementation of ELBA’s flagship embedded project manager initiatives in conjunction with the Business Development Director Other Responsibilities • Actively encourage partner companies to provide/ share resources other than volunteers, including the hosting of meetings • Exploit links with other ELBA projects, such as the Employment and ELBP procurement programmes to help support the development of new business • Support the Business Development Director in identifying companies suitable for recruitment to ELBA Relationship Management • Support Community and Education Programme Directors in servicing their respective Forums and, in particular, helping maintain their membership numbers • Ensure that member companies are supported to develop employee volunteering initiatives that meet their targets, priorities and strategies • Anticipate potential relationship and/or delivery issues before they arise so that appropriate measures can be put in place ROLE PROFILE • Emphasise the value for money and efficiency of ELBA programmes in delivering their objectives in quarterly reports and all other communications to members • Alongside the Programme Directors, manage the relationship with key public sector stakeholders including the GLA, local Authorities and National Government departments including DCLG, BiS and the DfE • Represent ELBA at the most senior level on public and/or private forums, committees, working parties etc • Build relationships with main grant funders • Maintain and build strong relationships with key community partners across east London • Help to build the capacity of community organisations through the use of business contacts/volunteers Strategy and Business Development • Contribute to and help implement ELBA’s core business strategy • Develop a long term funding strategy/model • Understand and develop programmes that align with individual partner companies’ strategic aims • Develop opportunities for collaborative project work between the partner companies Communications and Reporting • Expand and improve ELBA’s current communication platform through the ELBA’s website and through our social media accounts including Twitter and Facebook • Research and improve ELBA’s impact measurement and reporting, especially in regard to the JET framework and the London Benchmarking Group standards General • Develop a broad knowledge of regeneration programmes and Local Authority priorities • Develop knowledge of S106 partners and their local commitments • Work with the ELBA Programme Directors more widely across the 6 Olympic Growth boroughs • Represent ELBA at meetings, social events and functions • Make use of ELBAs internal systems, particularly Google Apps and Microsoft CRM to maintain records and report progress • Attend ELBA team meetings, collaborate with ELBA colleagues on projects where appropriate and contribute to the development of ELBA as an organisation • Adhere to and implement all relevant policies, including equal opportunities and health and safety always ensuring that the Community and Education teams are doing so as well • Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Chief Executive 7 Managing Director | March 2015 PERSON SPECIFICATION Experience and Knowledge Education Qualifications • Good understanding of ELBA’s proposition and competitors’ products • Educated to degree level • Evidence of continuing professional development • Experience or understanding of leadership and community development in an inner city, multi racial context Personal Attributes • Proven ability to inspire, lead, motivate and manage staff and volunteers, so that activities are co-ordinated and effectively delivered • Credibility and gravitas to lead an organisation working in an increasingly important field • Passionate about and committed to the aims of ELBA • Successful track record of generating significant ongoing income through the identification and promotion of new business opportunities • Strategic thinker with excellent communication, negotiation, stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills • Experience of setting, working to, measuring and evaluating operational and strategic objectives and associated KPIs • Commercial acumen, with the ability to identify and develop new opportunities • Financially astute with a proven track record of budget holding and cost management, with a commitment to strong budget management and to swift action to address slippage if required • Ability to balance the strategic vision (and planning ability) with the day to day operational needs • Excellent programme management skills with the ability to oversee multiple programmes simultaneously while working flexibly and under pressure • An ability to delegate responsibility appropriately and empower Programme Directors and staff • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to form effective working links with funding partners • Competent with IT and with
