May the LORD show kindness to you”... As we continue our series of messages on the “Wonderful Women in the Word” we’re sharing the story of Naomi, whose name means “to be pleasant, sweet, delightful, and beautiful”; who after facing famine, the death of her husband, and the death of her two sons says, "Call me Mara (bitter) because Shaddai has dealt bitterly with me" (Ruth 1:20) ” Yet, through it all, Naomi is an illustration of the strong faith, the wisdom (mother wit), and the loving care we are so grateful God places in mothers. The Men of Quinn just want to say THANK YOU! 1. Ruth 1: 3-5 – Now Elimelek, Naomi’s husband, died…and both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband. a. Such it is in our lives as God takes our dark times and through His powerful hand highlights the gold in us. A mother’s strong faith, wisdom, & loving care are made most apparent in the darkest and most difficult times, and for this we say THANK YOU! STRONG FAITH 2. Ruth 1: 8b – May the Lord who kindness (hesed) to you, as you have shown to your dead and to me. a. Naomi never lost faith. The Hebrew word “hesed” expresses Naomi’s prayer that the Lord would show His faithful, covenant-keeping love to the two Moabite widows. b. Naomi says, "Call me Mara because Shaddai has dealt bitterly with me" (Ruth 1:20) i. Some of you have faced circumstances that make you feel like you’ve lost the very core of your inner being. ii. They were so painful, so constant in their grip on our hearts and minds, so emotionally debilitating we forgot who we were 1. Simply found ourselves pulling ourselves out of the bed; 2. Putting one foot in front of the other; 3. Dreading having to function during the day while dreading the aloneness and unending thoughts in our night. iii. You’ll forget your name c. Naomi acknowledges Him as El Shaddai, the Almighty One. 2 Copyrights © 2015 by James M. Moody. All rights reserved. When you face bitter times, God welcomes your honest prayers. God responds with patient love so you don’t overlook the love, strength and resources that God provides in your present relationships. God touches you with God’s finger of comfort so you don’t allow bitterness and disappointment to blind you to your opportunities. So even when your circumstances have been bitter (Mara) on the outside, you’ve managed to remain sweet (Naomi) on the inside and for that we say THANK YOU! WISDOM 3. Ruth 3: 2 – Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. a. The wisdom of Naomi is expressed through her recognition of her kinsman redeemer, “Boaz” and her ever-present knowledge of her “Kinsman Redeemer, Jehovah.” b. A woman who has Christ as her master is the master of every circumstance. c. A woman of God, when pressed by the circumstances of life doesn't push away from the Potter's hands. She trusts God that God is shaping her into a vessel of beauty and honor and proving her with resources of great value. d. God has shaped some beautiful vessels in this house and the Men of Quinn want to say THANK YOU! LOVING CARE 4. Ruth 1: 8a – “Go back each of you, to your mother’s home.” 3 Copyrights © 2015 by James M. Moody. All rights reserved. The loving care of Naomi is expressed through her request of her daughters-in-law to “Return home my daughters. Why would you come with me? It is more bitter for me than for you… (Ruth 1: 11-13a) Even in her desperate situation, Naomi had a selfless attitude. Even though this would mean hardship for her, Naomi didn’t want her daughters-in-law to experience that hardship also. Like Naomi, mothers consider the needs of others and not just our own. As Naomi discovered, mothers know, when you act selflessly, others are encouraged to follow your example. For all of the selfless, considerate, and sacrificial loving care you extend to others we say THANK YOU! INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP 4 Copyrights © 2015 by James M. Moody.
