Making Him Known - Redeemer Lutheran Church
Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 Redeemer Lutheran The Third Sunday Church “Making Him Known” of Easter But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 Sunday, April 19, 2015 – 8:00 am Sunday, April 19, 2015 – 10:40 am Our Mission Statement: “As Christians based on the solid foundation of God’s Word, empowered by the Holy Spirit we strive to live out, lift up, and share our faith in Jesus Christ – welcoming all into our family of believers.” Our Theme: Each month this year we are considering how different Biblical characters made our Lord known in unique ways. In April, we are learning about the apostle Peter – who made our Lord known to those who were different. WELCOME VISITORS We have printed out our worship service to make it easier for all of us to follow. Hymns are found in the hymn section of the Lutheran Service Book or in Worship & Praise, the purple supplement. Please visit our “Welcome Center” in the narthex for additional information about Redeemer. OUR THEME FOR TODAY is “Sharing Jesus in a Materialistic World.” While we have discovered that there are many things more important than the physical things of this world, we recognize that many around us only measure happiness by the things they have – or do not have. We Come Into God’s Presence (*) Those who are able are asked to stand during these parts of the service. GREETINGS AND ANNCOUNCEMENTS (We welcome our fellow worshipers.) HYMN “This Joyful Eastertide” ............................................................................ LSB 482 (*) CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (Please stand.) P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. -1- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 C: P: C: Amen. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: C: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. C: (*) HYMN OF PRAISE -2- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (*) SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. P: Let us pray. O God, through the humiliation of Your Son You raised up the fallen world. Grant to Your faithful people, rescued from the peril of everlasting death, perpetual gladness and eternal joys; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (Please be seated.) ANTHEM (8:00 am) (10:40 am) “We Will Lift Up Your Name” - Quartet “Shine, Shine, Shine” – Alleluia Singers -3- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 God Speaks to Us SCRIPTURE READINGS L: The First Lesson for the Third Sunday of Easter is from the third chapter of Acts. 11 While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade. 12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see. 17 "Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. Act 3:11-21 NIV L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. L: The Epistle is from 1 Peter chapter one. 13 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy." 17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person's work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God. 1 Peter 1:13-21 NIV -4- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 L: C: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please stand to sing.) (*) ALLELUIA AND VERSE (*) HOLY GOSPEL L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth chapter. 36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you." 37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have." 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, "Do you have anything here to eat?" 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence. 44 He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, "This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high." Luke 24:3649 NIV L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. (Please be seated.) -5- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 CHILDREN'S MESSAGE (Parents, please feel free to come forward with smaller children.) HYMN “‘How Shall They Hear,’ Who Have Not Heard” ..................................... LSB 831 SERMON “Sharing Jesus in a Materialistic World” - 1 Peter 1:13-21 We Respond To God’s Word (*) APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Please be seated.) God Serves Us His Holy Meal (*) PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. (*) PROPER PREFACE P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: (*) SANCTUS -7- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (*) THE LORD’S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. . . C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (*) THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (*) PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. -8- Redeemer Lutheran Church 869 7th Avenue SE Rochester, MN 55904 (*) AGNUS DEI (Please be seated.) Week of 4-19-2015 Adult Bible Classes DCE CALL COMMITTEE UPDATE SUNDAYS at 9:20 am NEW TESTAMENT APOSTLES Pastor Heining leads this class in the South Fellowship Hall. This class is looking at the lives of the men and women who surrounded Jesus and were the first to share the Good News. The primary source will be the Bible, but we will also consider some interesting traditions. CHRIST IS RISEN INDEED! SO WHAT? The Resurrection of Jesus is the climactic event in the history of the world. Have you ever stopped to truly ask yourself what this climactic event really means and how it changes your life today and the world for eternity? This class will actually be led by a seminary professor - Dr. Jeff Gibbs not in person but close - online! A great opportunity to learn from a man who has been working on answering the “so what?” for over 28 years! Pastor Koglin facilitates the discussion following each video in the North Fellowship Hall. ADULT CATECHISM: Through Confirmation the 10 Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord's Prayer, Communion, and Baptism are looked at in the Catechism. However that is only half of what is in this jam packed book by Martin Luther. The Small Catechism was written for heads of households to teach their family. There are a few sections in the back we don't get time to really look into. That is exactly what we will be doing in this Bible study. We'll get the chance to check out the other three sections of Confession, Daily Prayers, and Table of Duties. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend if they are curious about the less looked at sections of the Small Catechism. Brian Weyers leads this Bible study in the Choir Room/Room 203. 2 On March 18 Redeemer members passed a resolution, to form a call committee for the purpose of calling an additional DCE to serve as Director of Youth and Education here at Redeemer. The call committee held their initial meeting last week, they formed a job description and started the process of collecting names to be considered for this position. At this time we have received names of new graduates, we have also received a number of nominations from within the congregation, and we are looking forward to receiving a list of names of DCEs serving in the field from the district. At the beginning of May the call committee will meet to go through the names and information and start narrowing down the candidates. Once the list of candidates has been narrowed down, interviews will be conducted. When the interview phase is complete a voters meeting will be called and Redeemer will vote to extend a call. Throughout this process the call committee will continue to share information. Please keep the call committee and the congregation in your prayers as we move forward together to seek the Lord’s will. The call committee members are: Bryce Beckman, Dave and Terri Galanits, Rich Gommels, Sam Hildestad, Devin Janssen, Jay Kurtz, Paul and Lori Lewis, Dauline Menze, Lynora Miller, Bernie Nesler, Morgan Nitz, Joel Pralle, Mark Radtke, and Terri Zemke. Virginia Miller is serving as chair of this call committee. Week of 4-19-2015 NEW MEMBER SUNDAY— May 17! The next New Member event will be the weekend of May 16/17. With April being Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, we ponder the fact that these injuries account for an estimated 100,000 physician visits per year. Ninety percent of sports-related eye injuries can be avoided with the use of protective eyewear, such as: safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards designed for a particular sport. Ordinary prescription glasses, contact lenses, and sunglasses do not protect against eye injuries. Safety goggles should be worn over them. Protective eyewear, which is made of ultra-strong polycarbonate, is 10 times more impact resistant than other plastics, and does not reduce vision. All children who play sports should use protective eyewear, not just those who wear glasses or contact lenses; this is especially important for student athletes who have vision in only one eye or a history of eye injury or eye surgery. For children who do wear glasses or contact lenses, most protective eyewear can be made to match their prescriptions. Parents…Currently, most youth sports leagues do not require the use of eye protection. Parents and coaches must insist that children wear safety glasses or goggles whenever they play; you might also consider encouraging your child’s school to adopt a policy on protective eyewear for sports activities. Be proactive regarding your children’s eye care – make sure they use protective eyewear. Information taken from: https://www.nei.nih.gov/sports also http://www.sportseyeinjuries.com CPR/AED TRAINING Gold Cross instructors from Mayo Clinic, Jeff Schultz and Jill Ryan-Schultz, will be at Redeemer to offer CPR recertification and AED training. This outreach event is, in many ways, connecting with people who have little church connection in their past. Here is what I have learned about outreach from this event. Evangelism is as simple as being me. Evangelism is as simple as being me and eating with people. Evangelism is as simple as being me, eating with people, and talking about Jesus when He opens the door. How will you be you, eat with others, and talk about Jesus when He opens the door this week? Live your normal everyday lives with Gospel intentionality – Outreach made simply practical! Acts 1:8 Jesus Makes Himself Known — Through Forgiveness BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 1 Peter 1:18‐19 POINTS TO PONDER THIS WEEK: How have I (and my family) been influenced by the materialis c world in which we live? What have I discovered to be more important than material things? In this month of April we are talking about Peter! Our theme for the month is Making Him Known to those who are Different than us. Especially this week we are looking at how we share Jesus to a materialis c world. The world certainly does teach different than the Bible in terms of what is important to have and collect in life. How many mes have we wanted something so bad and we finally got it. We experience a few moments of bliss and happiness with it. It could be a brand new toy, a car, maybe a promo on. However a er a li le while the newness wares off and there is something bigger, brighter, be er, and newer that we now want. It becomes an endless cycle of ge ng and ge ng and ge ng. We will never be sa sfied by trying to get more and more. There is always something be er on the horizon. The Bible comes at it from a different angle. God sends His son to us and Christ goes through torture, death, and resurrec on in order to reconcile us with God the Father. The one thing in all of crea on we cannot get on our own is perfec on before God. The one thing we could strive over our whole lives is something God did all the work for us. In Christ, our Risen Lord, we have everything we could possible need, and we didn’t do anything to get it! This week remember that as you go out into the world in your job, school, and life that we have received the only thing we ever need, and He wants you to share Him with everyone!
