Research Grand Rounds – April 2015 SGH Study on Diabetes in Younger Patients *Note: Photographs will be taken during the event Join us at our April Research Grand Rounds: 1) Bringing your Research Ideas to Patient Care by Dr Henry Ho, Director of Medical Technology Office 2) Medical Informatics: Computational Analytics in Healthcare by Dr Liu Nan, Senior Research Scientist, Singapore General Hospital A SGH study revealed that patients below the age of 40 years manage their condition less well than older patients. The study conducted at SGH is part of an ongoing regional study by the Asia Diabetes Foundation and involved more than 300 diabetic patients. Research has shown that as compared to older patients, younger patients fared poorly in blood sugar level and cholesterol which were two of the three indicators doctors use to determine the condition. Details of the event: Date: 22 April 2015, Wednesday Time: 7.30 to 8.30am (Breakfast will be served at 7am) Venue: Seminar Room L1-S3 Dr Goh Su-Yen, Head and Senior Consultant, Department of Endocrinology, SGH was interviewed for the story. Breast Cancer in Men Many may think that breast cancer only affects women but men can get it too even though it is rare compared to female breast cancer. A team of doctors in SGH looked at patient data over 15 years and noted that about half of all male breast cancer cases were diagnosed only when they were in the advanced stages. This could be because men lack awareness about breast cancer in them, causing them to disregard breast lumps and not get medical attention in time. Dr Preetha Madhukumar, Senior Consultant, Division of Surgical Oncology, NCCS was interviewed. Learn about breast cancer in men. Genetic link to Spread of Colorectal Cancer Discovered The identification of key genetic features correlating to the spread of cancer from the colon or rectum to the liver could enable early detection of colorectal cancer and improve chances of a cure, an 18-month study of 18 colorectal cancer patients in Singapore has revealed. The team led by Dr Iain Tan, consultant medical oncologist at NCSS, learnt that the mutated genes in their colon tumour were mostly the same as those in the liver tumour that develops afterwards. Utilising these genes as a thumbprint for customised diagnostic blood tests for individual patients, cancer recurrence can be better monitored. Read on to find out more.
