As we near the end of a school year and graduation is around
the corner, it brings to mind – how many graduating seniors
have plans beyond high school and what was their path to
develop those post high school plans? Daily we focus on our
mission to prepare high achieving career and college ready
global citizens. To be college and career ready requires
students to aspire to an occupation aligned with their
passions. Students need exposure to various careers to gain
an understanding of the broad range of opportunities. Please
take the time to watch the RIHS CNA Class of 2015 video
mentioned in the newsletter. It’s great to know that we are
helping our students realize
their career dreams and
goals.

high school, I never imagined
working for a school
district, let alone aspire to
be a superintendent, mostly
because I never understood
that was ever possible. As you

reflect on your journey, most
likely the career path you took was based on some exposure
to a career, some coach or mentor encouraging/pushing,
and that your dream aligned to your passion. We need to
continually expand our students’ exposure to possibilities
so they make the best decision to align their passion to a
meaningful career.
Best practices indicate that when students clearly link their
future aspirations to daily classroom instruction, they have a
better chance at graduating and embarking on their chosen
career path. Our schools have made a commitment to hosting
career days and career fairs to encourage students to think
about their futures. Assuring students that they can aspire
to be anything they desire and assist them to understand
the effective effort and persistence needed to successfully
accomplish their dreams.
I thank you for your ongoing efforts to assist every
student aspire to greatness and linking our daily work with
their future success. Your motivation and coaching makes a
significant difference in the lives of our students. I applaud
you for giving the students the gift of becoming life-long
learners that will ensure that they will be high achieving
global citizens.

he 27th Annual Night of a Thousand Dreams, a
fundraiser for the Rock Island/Milan School District
presents, “A Taste of Rock Island-Milan” at Jumers Casino
& Hotel Friday, April 10, 2015, 6:00 pm. Come enjoy one
of the signature charitable events of the QCA! Admission
will include samplings of signature dishes from some
of the finest restaurants in Rock Island, Milan and the
surrounding area, complimented by fine wine and premium
beer. Attendees will also enjoy socializing, raffles, and
bidding in a first class silent and live auction. General
Admission is $25 and reserved seating is $30.

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Amanda Krahl, Edison Jr. High, who
welcomed a daughter, Madelyn, on Saturday, March
28th. Madelyn was born at 8:45 am and weighed 7
pounds 14.5 ounces and was 19.5 inches long. Madelyn
is now at home and enjoying her big brother Logan and
Mom and Dad (Mike) are doing well.

County Sales Tax Referendum Results
Unfortunately, the 1% county sales tax referendum was not successful. Overall, the entire Rock
Island County election results reflected that 49.65% voted “yes,” and 50.35% voted “no,” with a
difference of 188 votes.
In the Rock Island-Milan District, 4,921 citizens voted and approved the measure with
50.76% voting “yes” and 49.24% voting “No.” In 2014, voters in the Rock Island-Milan
School District defeated the measure with 46.33% voting “yes” and 53.67% voting
“No.”
There were fewer votes cast in 2015 (4,921) as compared to 2014 (5,102) and 2009
(7,042). The countywide results are still being reviewed. There will be a discussion in
the near future as to how/when to proceed with this issue.
Many parents, students and staff worked hard to get the Sales Tax information out to
the public. The grassroots campaign effort, supplemented with paid mail and voter
contact efforts, put the vote in a great position to pass, however still fell short.
Thanks to those of you that voted on the issue and those who also
dedicated your time and labor for the cause! Your efforts did make a
difference in the RIMSD vote!

REMINDER - .if you are on the Rock Island-Milan School District health insurance and you have any
life change event….stop and ask yourself “Do I need to notify anyone?”
If you are on your employers health insurance, the answer is “yes.” You have 30 days from the date
of the qualifying event to notify your employer of a divorce, birth, marriage, adoption or job loss
to make changes to your health insurance coverage. If you miss this 30 day window, you will not
be able to add to your plan until Open Enrollment period in October.

When the high school needed additional workstations for students to participate in the recent PARCC
assessments, Jeremy was able to quickly and effectively prepare the business computer labs for the testing.

Kelley is the first point of contact for all things technology. She has an answer for most of the questions
presented to her and when she doesn’t, she knows where to find a solution. If there was a problem during
the PARCC testing, it was Kelley that documented the issue and routed the questions to the proper
technology staff for a solution!

Melanie is the “Unsung Hero” of PARCC testing in the District. She prepared student data for the test,
worked with ISBE and PARCC to troubleshoot issues, and assisted district test administrators. I’m grateful
to Melanie for the many hours (often after 4:30!) she committed to this project!

Mike did a fantastic job making certain the wireless network was running at full capacity during the recent
session of PARCC tests. As a result of Mike’s preparations, the tests were completed with very few network
issues!

Laura is our “Google Guru” and has set up Google accounts for every staff member in the district and all
secondary students. She prepares workshops to train teachers and administrators to effectively use Google
tools for collaboration and sharing among themselves and with their students.

Calley did an awesome job facilitating the 2nd grade standards meeting on Monday, March 30th, along with
her facilitation partner, Tara Niemeier! They kept everyone on task, made the work fun, answered questions

Seniors Inducted into
National Honor Society
A total of 73 Rock Island High School seniors were
inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS) on
Wednesday, Apr. 8 in a special ceremony before an
audience of family, alumni and friends. Additionally,
82 juniors and 94 sophomores were recognized as
provisional members! To be eligible for NHS, a student
must maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher and volunteer a
minimum of 10 hours in the community. A student’s
leadership and character are also considered.
Overall, the NHS seniors at Rock Island High School devoted thousands
of hours towards volunteer efforts at organizations such as: United Way,
Animal Welfare Center, Festival of Trees, Bald Eagle Days, Girl Scouts, the
Martin Luther King Jr Center and Mississippi Valley Blood Center.

RIHS Student Poetry/Rap Video Online
Rock Island High School students Zhanaya Richardson and Paul Bilori wrote their own poem/rap
collaborative on the dangers of smoking. The two performed it at the March 30 Inservice at Rock

Earl Hanson Principal Alicia Sanders
was proud to welcome a special visitor on
Thursday, April 9 – Stanford University
Basketball Team Member/ Pac-12 ScholarAthlete of the Year and Rock Island High
School Graduate Chasson Randle! Randle
attended Earl Hanson Elementary “back in
the day” and was happy to take some time
and visit with the students while home in
Rock Island.
Randle also took the time that evening to
hold a meet/greet/autograph session at the
Rock Island High School Fieldhouse. About
500 community members attended to say
hello and ask Chasson sign a basketball,
t-shirt, newspaper or other memorabilia.

FOUNDATION
The Rock Island-Milan Education Foundation is looking for a part-time Executive Director to
work approximately 20 hours a week. Qualifications and experiences being sought include:
strong management and organizational skills within a non-profit setting; fundraising; grant
writing; ability to work with individuals, business and community contributors; effective oral
and written communications; public relations and communications; understanding of budget
& finances; and ability to keep flexible work schedule outside traditional workday.
History of work or involvement in the Rock Island-Milan community will be significant

FREE SHREDDING AT RI LIBRARY APRIL 18
Rock Island Public Library is having a free shred event on Saturday, April 18, from 9:30 to
11:30 am at the downtown Main Library, 401 19th Street. The library is partnering with Arc
Industries, a division of The Arc of the Quad Cities area. Participants can drive up and drop
off • 2 containers of personal papers per person (bag, box or plastic tub/tote).

LONGFELLOW BLOOD DRIVE THURSDAY APRIL 30
Longfellow Liberal Arts will host their quarterly Blood Drive from 2:30 - 6:30 p.m. on
Thursday, April 30 at the school. WALK INS ARE WELCOME! Please bring your donor
card or photo I.D. This event will provide much needed blood to the Mississippi Valley
