03/16/15 Mark Your Calendars March 17th: Class Picture Day March 18th: Yearbook Orders Due March 20th: Coffee with Clark March 23rd-25th: Make-Up Days March 27th-27th: Spring Break PTA President’s Note Wow! What an exciting couple of weeks we have had at Root, despite the many snow days! With all we have had going on in February and March, you would never have known we were out for almost two full weeks. A special thank you to all of our Root PTA committees, families and staff for being so flexible and accommodating. A big thank you to our Hospitality Committee for putting on an Oscar-worthy Teacher Appreciation Week. From the red carpet you rolled out every day to the awesome swag you gave out, our teachers truly felt like stars. Thank you to Amy Merriman and Kelly Jones and their awesome committee members Tricia Batchelor, Anna Eckel, Tricia Goodson, Lisa Kirkpatrick, Janet Mahoney, Jennifer Malone, Brooke Miller, Jessica Moore, Betty Nelson, Paige Peden, Nikki Powell, Lisa Setzer, Anne Graves Vinson and Margaret Wooten. Also, a special thanks to all the families who brought in gift certificates, candy, breakfast fare, drinks, etc. Thanks to you all for making Teacher Appreciation week such a blockbuster. Our funding committee has also been hard at work. The Applebee’s Flapjack breakfast was a huge success, and our Box Tops collection was fantastic. Thank you to Alison Hawse, Tiffany Lund, Stephanie Disbrow and Amy Suggs for all their hard work and effort. Last week, we dove straight into reading with our Under the Sea spring book fair. What fun it was to see so many students and families get excited about reading! Thank you all for coming out to support Root. More than 2,000 books were purchased. A big thank you to the book fair committee (Ashley Seamster, DeAnn Alphin, Nancy Torburg, Laurie Lund, Tricia Goodson, Ashlyn Whitford, Margaret Wooten, Neal Goodwin, Tammy Cloutier, Wendy Pedraza, Nikki Powell, Amy Perry, Brooke Miller and Amy Merriman) for such a fun and successful book fair. Also, a special shout out goes to Jen Marion, Heidi Van Brocklin, and Dawn Ellis for helping out with Doughnuts for Dad. For the past two weeks, Root has certainly proven it is a STEM school. The students did an awesome job on their STEM fair projects. Thank you to all those who participated (and yes, parents that includes you!!!). Also, a big thank you to our STEM Fair committee: Mr. Peterson (lead staff), Elizabeth Sparrow (PTA head), Ms. Dozier, Allison Reed, Brooke McDaniel, Craig Fisher, Kimberly Durland, Shana Stutts, Katie Lyon, Jessica McIntyre, Sharon McCallen, Charles Weaver, and Joelle Pemberton. In addition to the STEM fair, Root also hosted STEM Friday on March 6th. It was a great time, and the students thoroughly enjoyed presentations from many area scientists. This would not have been possible without Kimberly Durland, Ms. Dozier and Mr. Peterson’s hard work. We also had many parent volunteers who either presented or helped host. Thank you to Will McDaniel, Brooke McDaniel, Ivey Betts, Taylor Betts, Pam Patterson, Joelle Pemberton, Anna Eckel, Dana Parrish, Sue Jett Taylor, Mandy Patterson, Justin Scheef, Lisa Setzer, Brooke Miller, Elizabeth Cates, Audrey Gastmeyer, Katie Moye, Laurie Lund, and Allison Weatherman. If you missed all the STEM fun or if you still hungry for more, please mark your calendars (again!) for STEM Family Night for April 1st. Hopefully, April Fools will not fool us again, and we can have this fun event after rescheduling it three times...thank you Old Man Winter! We look forward to seeing you around school. And again, thank you to all of you for being so supportive of Root. Cooper Bratton and Sara Katherine Little Coffee With Clark Please join Mr. Clark for coffee Friday, March 20th from 9:15-10am in the Media Center to hear all the latest and greatest things going on at Root. Girls on the Run @ Root Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a fitness and leadership after school program "designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength." Plans are currently underway to make Root Elementary a GOTR location, but we need a show of support to make it happen! If you have a rising 3rd-5th grade girl who might be interested, please email Wendy Pedraza (wcpedraza@yahoo.com) so I can add your name to the list and show what a thriving location we could be! The group would meet twice a week this fall for 12 weeks for a fee of $200, which includes the end of season 5K registration. Scholarships available. We are also in the process of recruiting two volunteer coaches. If you know someone age 18+ who might be interested (runner or not), contact Melanie at melanie@gotrtriangle.org. Coach training provided through GOTR. For more info, visit gotrtriangle.org. Box Tops Winners Congratulations to the 2 winning classes for the spring box top collection, Paysour and Hunsucker. All your clipping wins your class a popsicle party! Remember to keep clipping for our next collection! Come Workout at Barre3 and Support Root Barre3 is teaming up with the Root PTA for a 2 classes for $20 promotion. Look for your voucher in Tuesday folders in the coming weeks. K-1st grade students will bring their voucher home this week, 2-3rd grade students will follow a few weeks later and then 4-5th grade students a couple of weeks after that. For every voucher used, Barre3 will donate $10 to Root. If you haven't tried Barre3 or if you are a regular, now is the time to go and get ready for swimsuit season!
