READING:
This term we are looking at the author Colin Thiele. The
students will be looking at the stories ‘Storm Boy’ and ‘Pannikin
and Pinta’. Week One of this term will focus on the ANZAC
Centenary.
Modelled and Shared: Simpson and His Donkey, My Grandpa
Marches on ANZAC Day, Storm Boy, Pannikin and Pinta.
Guided: Small groups targeting specific reading strategies
including a predicting, visualising, inferring, fluency and
comprehension skills.
Independent reading of an individual novel.
SPELLING:
Students will learn a variety of spelling rules and strategies
including Look Say Cover Visualise Write Check (LSCVWC),
syllables, memory, mnemonics, base words, segmenting words,
word shapes, word sorts, small words inside spelling words and
activity sheets. Students will also have personal and topic words.
TALKING AND LISTENING
Students will write a short speech on Rostrum topics. We will
teach speech writing techniques and tips for presenting
speeches. Students will research information on Colin Thiele and
use their knowledge of characters from the class texts to
conduct mock interviews.
GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION
Students will recognise how quotation marks are used in texts
to signal dialogue, titles and quoted (direct) speech. They will
experiment with the use of quotation marks in their own writing.
Review of common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns, as well as
verbs, adverbs, and adjectives.
WRITING
During the term our focus is on writing to entertain. Students
will continue to write in their Writers Journal and have
opportunities to develop their skills in narrative, description and
poetry. They will plan, draft and publish written texts.
Students will continue to develop their cursive writing by using
clearly formed joined letters, and develop increased fluency and
automaticity.
Mathematics










Investigate number sequences involving multiples of
3,6,7,8, and 9
Recall multiplication facts up to 10x10 and related
division facts
Develop efficient mental and written strategies and
use appropriate digital technologies for
multiplication and for division where there is no
remainder.
Explore and describe number patterns resulting
from performing multiplication.
Convert between units of time.
Use AM and PM notation and solve simple time

Use scaled instruments to measure and compare

It is suggested that no more than 30 mins be spent on
homework, four times a week. Below is a guide to possible
activities. Parents should certainly exercise their own
judgement regarding homework in relation to other out of
school activities already undertaken by their son/daughter.
Spelling – The students will be given the opportunity to practise
spelling words through the spelling activities grid.
Maths – Mathletics
Reading – Students are expected to read for enjoyment for a
recommended minimum of 15 minutes each day. This term we
would like to encourage children to read a variety of text types.
More information will be included in their Homework Book.
Diaries- Students are expected to record their reading in their
School Diaries and return to school on Friday to be sighted by
the teacher.
