TOWER TOPICS COMMUNITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH May 2015 MAY EVENTS 5/3 Worship Service 11:00 am JOURNEYING WITH PASTOR MANNY 5/13 MOPS 9:15 am Last Sunday, April 26, we joyfully received ten new members (full and preparatory membership) in our church. Enfolding the Tisseras, the Nonezes, Noemi Bernasol, and Cheryl Gero in our community of faith calls us not only to celebrate God’s faithfulness in making disciples of Christ through our local church, but also to recommit ourselves to our mission as faithful disciples of Christ. I find the following ten guidelines for our daily ministry from The United Methodist Primer a good reminder as we do ministries with our new brothers and sisters in Jesus: 5/16 District Day of Learning 1. 5/5 Trustees Meeting 7:30 pm 5/9 Men’s Group 9:00 am Spring Clean Up 9:45 am 5/10 Worship Service 11:00 am 5/17 Worship Service 11:00 am Orchid Club Celebration 5/18 CPS 12:15 pm 5/23 Interfaith Breakfast 5/24 Worship Service 11:00 am 5/25 Memorial Day Parade 5/28 Prayer Meeting 7:00 pm 5/29 Music @ CUMC 7:00 pm 5/31 Worship Service 11:00 am Realize that you are not alone. God’s grace will sustain you. 2. Be sensitive to the needs of others. Try to put yourself in their place. How might you feel if you were in their situation? What might you do to respond to their needs? 3. Consider yourself on call in terms of those who need you. Make yourself available. At the same time, don’t wait to be asked. Many people who desperately need friendship and help are hesitant to make their needs known. 4. Recognize that you do not have all the answers. You may not change the situation at hand, but you have the compassion and understanding to share. 5. As you minister with and to others, be willing to deal with the unexpected. Remain flexible. There may well be surprises no one can predict. 6. Be willing to accept failure. Everything may not turn out just the way you want it to. You will need to learn to live with an awareness of the incomplete and unfinished. 7. Be willing to accept people as they are, with all their failures and shortcomings. 8. Be willing to tackle one small part of a big problem, realizing that you may not be able to transform the entire situation. 301 Chestnut Street, Roselle Park, NJ 07204 9. Know that ministry involves both giving and receiving. How often I have tried to lend support to someone facing crisis only to find that I came away strengthened by the one I had come to help. In ministering, I was ministered to. 10. Keep your eyes fixed on Christ. Mother Teresa of Calcutta asked that people pray for her so that she would not lose sight of Christ even while ministering to the poor. That is the secret of sharing our gifts and lives with others.i PLEASE PRAY FOR: Marion Bjornsen, Carol Caffrey, Helen Sheldon, Garry B., Alix, Diana Rineer, Don & Jean Apsley, Catherine & Frank Wargo, CUMC our church family, The MOPS Group, Community Preschool ___ To be a transformed and transforming church means that we never cease to learn new life-giving truths about being and doing as the church in relation to one another, our community, the world, and all of God’s creation. In learning, the Church is shaped to listen to and learn from one another, from various disciplines, the local and global world, and even from people of other faiths. In doing, the church is empowered to preach the gospel and lead peoples to know the truth that challenges them to be participants in God’s liberating activity. Let us give our warmest welcome, love, and support to the new members of our church family, Community UMC! Rev. Manuel P. Cruz, Jr. ___________________ iChester E. We held our annual Flag Walk to celebrate our wonderful kids. So many parents, grandparents, siblings and friends joined us as we waved American flags and walked down Chestnut Street! Thanks to the RP Police Dept. for keeping us safe as we crossed each street. May brings lots of learning about the world around us. Each class will be studying the life cycle of butterflies as we watch the metamorphosis first hand. This is always so exciting! After our study is complete, we wish the new butterflies well as we watch them fly away. The Four’s Class will expand their observation of animal life even further as they ride a yellow school bus to the Turtle Back Zoo. Parents and children alike love this day full of fun and exploration! Both of these programs are paid for by the fundraising that we do throughout the year. Thank you to all who support our preschool through our fundraisers, and in lots of big and small ways. You bless both the staff and the students as you generously care and help this ministry! Pamela Henn, Preschool Director MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AND PICNIC! Everyone who wishes to walk in the Memorial Day Parade and represent CUMC, please gather at Sherman elementary school on East Grant Ave/ Sherman Ave at 9:15 am, Monday May 25th. The parade will end at the library, where a service will be held. Our Preschool will also be participating in the parade and Pastor Manny will be doing the closing prayer. After the service, everyone is invited to a backyard picnic hosted by the Casano Community Center, 314 Chestnut street. (In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Casano Center instead of the library lawn.) YOUTH & ADULT BOWLING LEAGUE At 2nd Baptist Church, 200 Locust Street, Roselle, NJ. Words can not express my thanks to the CUMC 'village' for all the love and support shown to me and my two foster children, Lois and Michael! From 'boo-boo' bunnies, donations of children's books and stuffed animals, gifts for the children, braiding Lois' hair (that has been a whole new world for me!), babysitting (official or attending to them during Coffee time), Easter cards, the Pastor's special blessing...the list of the gifts and givers is too long to print! Both children have felt welcomed and loved from the first time they came, and they look forward to coming to church each Sunday. AMEN!!! I am so blessed to be a member of this wonderful, wonderful village! From the bottom of my heart - thank you all for your love and support! Blessings to you all!
