Many kids get bullied all the time both inside and outside school. This can have a very bad effect on them, not only at the time but throughout their lives. Continued bullying has led people to avoid school, stay home and in some cases suicide. It is very important that kids have someone they can trust to talk to. If they hold negative feelings too long serious mental and emotional harm can result. Australia Remember !!!!! DON’T LET A BULLY TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE! 5 6 1 Being bullied ? What Parents can do Know someone being bullied ? Act brave even if you are scared. Hold you head up and try to feel confident. Encourage kids to be verbally assertive Show kids ways to help others Support and listen calmly without getting angry or interrupting. Make onlookers accountable, explain if they watch, that hurts the victim too Get to know their friends Don’t be too quick to give advice. Find out what they’d like to do before you make suggestions. Be a good example Help people you see being bullied Try not to argue with the person. Listen to their story. Build empathy .When you see people bullied in movies, TV or both, ask kids how the victim must feel Never say “get over it”, be tough’’, “stop being a baby”. This may make the child feel more alone and unsupported. Try not to get angry or upset—that’s just what the bully wants. Ignore the bully OR maybe try a comeback like ’Whatever” or “You’re probably right” and walk away. Talk to a trusted adult or a friend about what is happening. Try not to fight back-Show you can control your actions. What kids can do Try not to put yourself in situations where you know you will be singled out. Learn to be assertive. Don’t let the bully control you. 2 Stand up for each other, say “we don't think that’s funny” and walk away Be a friend. Stand up for the kid being bullied Get others to stand up too Go and speak to an adult. Ask trusted adult’s for help 3 Keep the conversation light – getting too involved may discourage the child from wanting to talk about it. Check if there is a bullying policy at school? 4
