2015 Junior National Rules & Regulations
Sponsorship & Eligibility
This show is sponsored by the American Salers Junior Association (ASJA), American Salers Association
(ASA) and the Tennessee Salers Association. The show is open to all ASJA members. Members who turned 22
years old before January 1, 2015 are not eligible. No alcohol or smoking will be permitted in barns.
1. Animals must be registered in the sole ownership of the junior exhibitor by May 15, 2015, to be eligible to show.
2. Original registration certificates or copies for each animal must be presented at the time of check-in. Tattoos
found to be missing, illegible, or in any other way incorrect with official ASA records will be disqualified.
3. Entries must meet Tennessee health regulations.
4. Entry fees are $35 per head. Entries must be postmarked on or before June 1, 2015. Late entries will be charged
$50 per head.
5. Cattle check-in will begin Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 12:30pm.
6. Stalls will be assigned to exhibitors according to state. NO BUTT FANS: a butt fan is defined as an individual,
movable fan placed in the aisle or behind a fitting chute.
7. To maintain a high degree of confidence in the show, the ASJA reserves the right to disqualify any animals that
have been fit or treated in an unethical manner. Unethical fitting includes any injection of gas, solid or liquid under
the skin to alter the normal conformation of the animal. This includes any cutting or tearing of the hide, or
underneath the hide, or removal of any tissue in an attempt to alter the shape of the animal. Any attempts to disrupt
or change normal dental development, dying or coloring of the hair coat that alters the natural coloration or
artificial tail or tail head polls will disqualify the animal. Any attempt to change the degree of firmness of any
animal is considered unethical. Artificial means that the filling of cattle internally is prohibited.
8. At any show in which the American Salers Association, no exhibitors, individuals assisting exhibitors, or
member owners at such show shall be allowed any use of paints, hair coloring, conditioners, colored show foam,
graphite, colored powders or any other substances. The Association may adopt and implement various tests
designed to monitor this prohibition including, but not limited to, a “white towel” or “white glove” test. No aerosol
cans or other pressurized containers will be allowed in designated make-up areas.
9. Bedding in the barn will be wood chips provided by the fairgrounds. Straw and hay will be available for purchase
on the fairgrounds. Show supplies will be sold on the grounds the entire week of the show.
10. Exhibitors must be present to exhibit their own animals entered in the show; emergencies will be decided on by
the ASJA Board of Directors.
11. Each member must participate in 3 contests in order to be eligible to exhibit in the ASJA Junior National Show
Arrival & Departure Times
Cattle begin arriving no earlier than Monday, July 13, 2015 and must be in place by Tuesday, July 14, 2015
by 12:00 pm. Contact the ASA office for special arrangements. Cattle will be released following the show.
Prepared Speech Contest (New for 2015!):
The topic for the 2015 speech contest will be: “How can Salers genetics improve your herd?”
1. Members will have a time minimum and a time maximum to give their prepared speech.
-Juniors have a minimum of three minutes and no more than eight minutes to give their speech.
-Intermediates have minimum of four minutes and no more than eight minutes to give their speech.
-Seniors will have a minimum of six minutes and no more than eight minutes to give their speech.
2. Note cards are allowed, but points may be deducted from too much use. (Except for juniors)
3. Members are expected to cite their sources through the speech. (Give credit where it’s due)
4. Judges will be allowed up to two additional minutes for questioning.

State Pride:
● A competition between states (or groups of states if you so choose) to showcase Salers cattle, along with other
special aspects of your particular state.
● You will receive an area set aside for your state to prepare a booth, with one table provided.
● You must provide all other materials for your preparations.

● This year’s theme will be: “Makin Moosic to my Salers”– interpretation is up to your group, but the idea is to
incorporate both Salers and music into your booth!
● Opening Ceremonies – please bring something to represent your state for opening ceremonies. This is at your
discretion - it may be as big or as small as you would like it to be, but it will count towards your State Pride Contest
scores!

No-Fit Showmanship
Junior, Intermediate, and Senior no-fit showmanship contests will be held Wednesday, July 15, 2015.
1. Contestants will exhibit animals in a clean, but unfit condition.
2. Junior, Intermediate, and Senior divisions will be broken down into as many heats as deemed necessary.
The judge will choose the number of individuals asked to return from each heat (finalists). Preliminary
heats will not be placed.
3. ASJA members who did not enter an animal in the National Junior Show are allowed to borrow an animal
from another ASJA member.
4. Contestants will be allowed to wear their choice of attire for the showmanship contest (please save your tshirt provided at Junior Nationals for the Junior National show)

Paul Trueblood Memorial Show-down Showmanship Jackpot:
Juniors, Intermediates, and Seniors are allowed to participate in this contest. For 2015, the showdown
showmanship contest will take place separately from the ASJA Junior National Show.
1) Participants must show their own animal.
2) Participants must fit their own animal.
3) Participants may enter in the show-down showmanship contest on the Junior National registration form and pay
a $10 registration fee, or may enter at Registration.
4. Participants will bring their animal, chute, and any necessary tools or supplies to the designated fitting area, and
will be allowed 30 minutes to fit their animal.
5. All fitting must be done in the designated area.
6. Members will not be required to wear official Junior National shirts for this event.

Team Fitting
Teams will consist of four participants including at least one junior, intermediate and senior individual. A
time limit is set to allow the team to prepare or “fit” the animal with proper grooming techniques. Animals will not
be shown.
1. An ASJA team member participating in the contest must be willing to use their animal and chute for the contest.
2. If there are ASJA members that want to participate and do not have a team, the ASJA Board will place them on
teams.

Team Marketing & Advertising Contest
1. All age levels are eligible for this contest
2. Teams will consist of 3 members from the same age group. Teams will also be decided randomly.
3. Every team will be marketing the same animal, and no live animals will be used for this contest. You will be
provided all the materials, pictures, etc. needed to market the animal.
4. For all age levels: you will give a minimum 5 minute presentation, including questions. The presentation will be
stopped at the end of 10 minutes. Each individual on the team will be expected to speak during the presentation.
The objective of the team is to sell their animal. The following topics should be discussed:
● Pedigree information ● Performance information ● Visual characteristics

5. The judge’s questions will not necessarily be limited to the 3 topics listed above. Teams will be discounted for
using notes, but are encouraged to use reference materials.
6. Points will be awarded as follows:
● Knowledge: 25 points
● Ability to communicate: 25 points
● Team organization: 25 points
● Overall effect: 25 points
7. In addition to the overall marketing process, Intermediate and Senior team will be required to create an
advertisement of their choice with the materials provided. This will also be taken into consideration for determining
your overall contest score, worth an additional 25 points. (Juniors are exempt from this part of the contest)

Bucket Calf Showmanship
Any exhibitor that exhibits a bucket calf will be exempt from both Junior Showmanship and the National
Show.
1. Exhibitor must be able to adequately and safely handle the calf.
2. Exhibitor must be 9 years of age or younger to show.
3. Exhibitors must be an ASJA member.
4. Calves must have been born on or after January 1, 2015.
5. Calves must not have nursed cow after two weeks of age.
6. Calves may be a heifer, steer or bull.
7. Calves must be broke to lead.
8. Criteria for judging:
A. Quality of Calf 10%
B. Showmanship 25%
C. Condition, Health & Grooming 25%
D. Knowledge of Project 40% (what breed, age of calf, feeding practices)
9. Calves must have health certificates.
10. If necessary, classes will be determined by exhibitor’s years of experience in project.
Bull Show
Any Bred & Owned bull born Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2014 will be eligible for the bull show. Any bull calf still
nursing (born after January 1, 2015) is not required to be bred & owned.
● Spring Bull Calf – Calved on or after 1-1-15
● Fall Bull Calf – Calved 8-1-14 to 12-31-14
● Junior Yearling Bull – 1-1-14 to 7-31-14
Optimizer Bulls are also eligible, and the divisions will be the same as the purebred show.
Steers
Steers must be 50% Salers or higher percentage to compete. Registration papers are required. There will be
two classifications in each of the two divisions: Prospect Division – steers must weigh 1,050 lbs. or less. Market
Division – steers weighing 1,051 lbs. or more. Classes will be broken by weight on Thursday, July 16, 2015.
Heifer Show
Salers heifers with 87.5% or greater Salers blood and born on or after August 1, 2013 are eligible. The show
committee will divide the following 6 divisions into no more than 12 classes. Every effort will be made to have no
more than 16 head per class.
● Spring Heifer Calf – Calved on or after 1-1-15
● Heifer Calf – Calved 9-1-14 to 12-31-14
● Summer Heifer Calf – Calved 6-1-14 to 8-31-14
● Intermediate Heifer – Calved 3-1-14 to 5-31-14
● Jun.Yearling Heifer - Calved 1-1-14 to 2-28-14

● Sen.Yearling Heifer - Calved 9-1-13 to 12-31-13
Optimizer Heifers Females exhibited in the Optimizer heifer class must have been born on or after August 1, 2013 and be a
registered percentage female between 50% and 87.4% Salers. Optimizer heifer divisions will follow the same
divisional breakdowns.
Bred-and-Owned Bred-and-owned shows will be separate for Salers and Optimizer heifers. All
heifers exhibited must show the exhibitor as owning the entry’s dam at the time of conception. The exhibitor must
be listed as the breeder on the registration papers. A total of four classes will be broke at the show depending on
entries.
● Optimizer Bred and Owned will immediately follow the Optimizer Show.
● Purebred Bred and Owned will immediately follow the purebred show.
Cow/Calf
Both a Salers division and an Optimizer division will be available. Two classes of cow/calf pairs for each
division: two-year olds and cows 3 to 7 years of age. Cows must be lactating with their natural 2014 born calf at
side. Heifer calves may enter individual heifer classes and Bred-and-Owned divisions. Bull calves may be entered
in the Junior Bull Calf Division. The calf must be registered and meet the criteria for the heifer show or bull calves.
● Any purebred cow with a purebred calf at side will show in purebred show.
● Any optimizer cow with an optimizer calf at side will show in the optimizer show.
● If there is any question, the calf’s percentage dictates the show in which the pair will be.
Divisional Top Individuals
Overall division awards will be made to the following:
 Champion Senior Individual (15-22 years old)
 Reserve Champion Senior
 Champion Intermediate Individual (10-14 years old)
 Reserve Champion Intermediate
 Champion Junior Individual (9 years of age and under)
 Reserve Champion Junior
Winners will be selected based on the following point system:
 Exhibit one or more animals – 10 points
 Exhibit Grand Champion heifer, steer or cow/calf pair – 5 points
 Exhibit Reserve Grand Champion – 3 points
 If the contestants of any age division are in the top 6 of any of the listed contests including Showmanship,
Advertising, and Team Marketing they will receive points for the following:
o 1st Place – 10 points
o 2nd Place – 9 points
o 3rd Place – 8 points
o 4th Place – 7 points
o 5th Place – 6 points
o 6th Place – 5 points
Overall Salers Exhibitor Competition:
Exhibitors that participate in the Prepared Speech, Team Marketing and No-fit Showmanship contests, and exhibit
at least one animal in the 2015 ASJA Junior National Show will be eligible for the Overall Salers Exhibitor
Competition.
 Exhibitor must designate one animal whose show placing points will be taken into account for the Overall
Exhibitor Competition to the ASJA Board.

Point totals will be taken just as they are for the Junior, Intermediate, and Senior Overall Points contests,
but there will be no divisional breakdowns. All age groups will be eligible and considered for this
competition.
The Top 6 overall exhibitors (with capabilities of expanding up to Top 10 depending on funds raised) will
receive their choice of the following, beginning with the #1 exhibitor and working downwards until prizes
are distributed:
o Grooming Chute with Padded Floor
o Stand-up Dolly Show Box
o Blowers
o Fans
o And more to be determined!

Premier Breeder & Premier Exhibitor
The ASJA will present an award to the premier exhibitor and premier breeder of the show. The premier
exhibitor will be determined by the exhibitor’s placement in individual steer, heifer and cow/calf classes. The
premier breeder will be determined by the breeder’s placement in individual steer, heifer and cow/calf classes.
Points are accumulated as follows: 1st Place – 3 pts; 2nd Place – 2 pts; 3rd Place – 1 pt. Maximum number of
placements used to determine the winner shall be limited to three. In the case of a tie, additional placements will be
used.

ASJA Board of Directors Application
During the Junior National, the ASJA will elect new members to serve on the Board of Directors. To apply
you must be at least 16 years old and a member of the ASJA. Members interested in running for the ASJA Board
of Directors must complete an application form and return it to the ASA office any time before July 1, 2015.
Applicants will be asked to provide, three references, a list of their own experiences, relevant projects and
offices held, or club responsibilities, description of any recognition or awards received and achievements through
showing Lowline cattle.
Board members must be willing to travel, at their own expense, to the Junior National Show to attend the
ASJA annual meeting and one additional meeting during their one term of office. Along with the completed
application form, a one-page, typed, single-spaced essay about the goals of an ASJA Director must be submitted.
