Mixing graphic design with the unexpected such as sculpture or creative writing defines
my design approach. I prefer to take the unconventional route to conventional things,
exploring multiple avenues when presented with a design problem. The foundation for
my design methodology is always research. It contextualizes every project whether client
based or in pursuit of my own curiosity. Research inevitably teaches me something new
even when dealing with familiar subjects. Communication is key to my philosophy; I do
my absolute best to provide a clear and concise message for the audience.
Fritz Kahn and Tobias Frere-Jones are two designers that have inspired me through their
ability to combine unusual materials and unconventional research methods. Kahn is a
little known purveyor of infographics that tell a story and provide a clear message to his
audience. His usage of various materials is fascinating and something I aspire to use
more through my career. Frere-Jones’ dedication to research took him away from his
desk and out into the world looking in old and peculiar places to build the foundation of
his Gotham typeface. His actions remind me to be creative and look in unconventional
places for inspiration for even the smallest of tasks.
As a writer as well, I pride myself in being able to approach the creative process
from another angle that provides additional insight into design problems. Words are as
powerful a tool as visuals. While some designers work with client-provided copy, I have
the ability to create the copy. Reworking the wording of something can often lead to a
completely new perspective and solution.
Web design is my strength and the media that I am most interested in pursuing. Life
on the cutting edge of design and coding appeals to me and is what I aspire to be at the
forefront of in my career. There will always be a strong desire to learn and be inspired
through my work and the works of others. Whether it be design, fantasy novels, games,
philosophy, or physics—one can learn something from everything.
