Chi Mei Flat Panel Display Manufacturing Facility
Chi Mei Flat Panel Display Manufacturing Facility Client Name: Chi Mei Optoelectronics Project Highlights: • • • One of the world largest fabrication sites; cleanroom area exceeds 270,000m2 Integrated blend of design and construction management Multiple projects with the client ranging from G5 to G8.5 Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of TFT-LCD, the current major flat panel display technology. The company’s main products are LCD TV panel and LCD panel displays for desktop and notebook computers, delivered to IT and home electronic vendors worldwide. CH2M HILL’s Taipei office has provided CMO with integrated design and construction management services for some of the most advanced FPD production facilities. Our services have included: • Master planning • Industrial engineering • Architectural/engineering • Construction management • Construction services As technologies develop in the fast paced TFT-LCD industry, new production lines must be built to accommodate larger substrate sizes. The size of substrate increases by a factor of 1.5 to 2 from one generation to the next. © 2011 CH2M HILL 1 Chi Mei Flat Panel Display Manufacturing Facility The first Generation 5 TFT-LCD production line, with a substrate size of 1 by 1.2 meters, was launched in the fourth quarter of 2002. The current Generation 10 TFT-LCD flat panel facilities are expected to deploy a substrate size of 2.85 meters by 3.05 meters or larger— more than twice the size of a king sized mattress. CH2M HILL has completed several major flat panel display manufacturing facility projects for CMO in Taiwan, including Fab 3, Fab 4, Fab 7 and Fab 8. The Generation type ranges from G5, G5.5, G7.5 to G8.5. CMO Fab 8 is one of the largest fabs in the world, with a three-level manufacturing cleanroom area exceeding 270,000 square meters (about 2,900,000 square feet). The facility is designed to contain advanced manufacturing tools, complex automatic material and product handling systems, utility equipment, production engineers, and support staff. The biggest challenge in designing this type of facility is thoroughly defining project requirements, coordinating the needs from different disciplines, and evaluating and determining the most efficient and cost-effective approaches in a very limited time frame. These activities must occur during design, while much tool and equipment information is still uncertain. This requires experienced architects and engineers working closely together, supported by knowledge accumulated over the course of many projects. Our long and productive relationship with CMO is based on our commitment to understand their business strategies and support them with responsive, reliable, and innovative solutions. We have worked closely with CMO to ensure that each project meets their commitment to construct the most costeffective and efficient facilities in the world, with the quality demanded by the most advanced technology. © 2011 CH2M HILL 1
