Principal’s Reflections
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Spring has arrived!
Our first week back from Spring Break was an exciting one, rife with creativity. The district musical, Little Shop of Horrors,
closed before break. It was a visual and auditory delight! Just after break, our students participated in Writers Week. A celebration of writing and creative expression, the week featured professional writers, entertainers, and multiple outlets for student voice. Wednesday April 1st, we hosted Write Night, an opportunity for our students to share their literary works with the
public. It is
important that we foster literacy, creativity and inspiration by featuring the work of our talented students and staff. The capstone fine arts event will occur at the end of the month with an exciting combination of Jazz Night and the opening of the
GCHS Art Show, please come out and support our Fine Arts program.
Events like those offered during Writers Week are part of our ongoing mission to create a strong sense of belonging amongst
our student body, by helping each one find and pursue their individual passions. Each year, we hope all our students find their
voice, set lofty academic goals, and use the skills honed at Grayslake Central to pursue them with conviction.
Our Seniors, the Class of 2015, are winding down their high school careers and preparing to use the skills they have learned to
pursue their dreams in the next chapter of their educational and professional careers. While we will miss each and every one
of them, their indelible marks will remain in legacy they leave and in the passing of the baton of excellence to our freshmen,
sophomore, and junior students. The Juniors wait to take their place as the experienced mentors to their fellow students.
Our Freshman and Sophomore classes will move up a peg, where the academic work takes on a new level of challenge and
rigor. The closing of each school year brings with it the emotions that accompany the closing of one chapter and the opening
of the next.
When the Class of 2019 was here in January, I let them know that they would be a part of a vibrant and active learning community, one that welcomes the sharing of talents, ideas and energy to continue to move Central to new heights. As the foundation for the future of our school, I emphasized to the incoming freshmen that their investment of time and effort in the pursuit of academic and extracurricular excellence will pay off in the future. It is up to all of us to support our students in this
endeavor.
Our students amaze us every day. Thank you for your support of our students as they grow into adults ready to make a difference in the world. I hope the final months are filled with a focused effort as we share the celebration of Ram Pride!

Hello Ram Nation!
We are excited to share a new opportunity for our GCHS students with you!
Teens, are you looking for a way to get involved? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of other
teenagers? Are you considering a career in criminal justice or law enforcement? Round Lake/Grayslake
Teen Court is looking for youth volunteers to serve as jurors and attorneys for the Teen Court Program. As a
teen juror, you will have the opportunity to hear the actual cases of juvenile misdemeanor offenders that
choose to have their case heard by a jury of their peers instead of in the traditional judicial court system.
The minimum commitment is one day per month. Teen Court is held on the 1st Wednesday of each month.
Additional information for this program can be picked up in the Guidance Office.
As a Pre-Prom assembly, all GCHS juniors and seniors will participate in a drug and alcohol awareness
program on April 27th. This program will be provided by a non-profit organization called Your Choice. This
organization was founded by the Lybert family – Sandy, Rick, Ashleigh and Tyler. The Lybert’s goal in creating
Your Choice is to reach out to young people and share their personal story about the dangers of substance
abuse as well as to encourage students to make healthy choices. Tyler began using drugs in sixth grade as a
way to make friends and fit in. By the time he got to high school, his drug use escalated from alcohol and
marijuana to pills and heroin. During presentations, Tyler shares his personal story about his struggle with
addiction as well as the negative impact that it had on his life. Tyler’s mother, father and sister also talk
about what it was like to be a family member to a person struggling with addiction. Tyler entered treatment
at the age of 21 and has been sober for six years. Since founding Your Choice, the Lyberts have been
dedicated to working with families and providing presentations in both school and community settings. They
are passionate about telling their story in hopes that it will help remove the stigma of teen substance abuse
and provide help and hope to teens and families. For more information about Your Choice, please visit

Final Exam Schedule
Second Semester Finals Exams will be administered on Friday, May 22, 26 and 27, 2015. Students are required to be on
campus only when they have scheduled exams. Lunch/studies and study halls will not meet. Busses will run at the
beginning and end of each day. Flex periods have been scheduled to balance exam schedules.

Advanced Placement Testing
Every May, students across the nation participate in Advanced Placement exams as a capstone to their
accelerated high school studies in a variety of subjects. Successful scores on these exams can earn them
exemptions from entry level courses, eligibility for special programs, and/or college credit. Grayslake Central

Commencement 2015
The commencement ceremony for the Class of 2015 is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, 2015, at 1:00 PM. In an
effort to allow the families of graduates adequate time to plan and prepare for the ceremony, we would like to
provide you with some key information.
The ceremony will begin at 1:00 PM precisely, so plan on arriving before that time. All graduates will be given
6 tickets at graduation practice. No additional tickets will be distributed by the school; if you need extra
tickets, your student should check with his or her classmates for tickets they will not be using.
All efforts are made to accommodate special individual needs.
Parking on campus is limited; no double parking is allowed. We have made arrangements for
off-site parking in the past and will continue to do so this year.
Parents, please stress the importance of appropriate behavior to your Seniors during the remainder of the
school year. Remember, all senior activities, including the graduation ceremony are privileges that may be
removed due to inappropriate behavior.
A senior letter, which will include all the important information regarding end of year activities, will be
mailed home in April.
There are many plans for our soon-to-be-graduates of the Class of 2015 and important dates to remember:
 Caps and gowns will be available for pick-up on Thursday, April 23, 2015, during lunch hours outside
of the theater. This is the ONLY scheduled cap and gown pick-up date.
 Senior Finals will take place on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 and Thursday May 14, 2015. The last day
of regular attendance for the Class of 2015 is May 14, 2015.
 Senior Athletic Honors night will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 6:30 PM at Maravela’s in Fox
Lake.
 Academic Honors Night for Seniors will take place on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the
Theater. We will recognize students for their academic distinction. Scholarships will also be
awarded. Seniors who have made the honor roll for 7 semesters will receive their medals.
 The Senior Class Breakfast will be Friday, May 15, 2015 at 8:00 AM. A slide show following breakfast
will be shown in the Theater. Commencement practice will begin at approximately 10:15 AM in the
Field House. After practice, the graduates will be excused for the day.
 On Sunday, May 17, 2015, seniors should arrive at 12:00 PM and report to their assigned room
location.

Dear Parent/Guardian:
I am writing this in regards to the senior breakfast/senior slide show. This year’s senior breakfast/senior slide
show will take place on Friday, May 15th beginning at 8:00 a.m.
In order to make the senior slide show a success, I need parents to send in old photographs of their graduating
senior, along with pictures of their GCHS friends from childhood. If possible, we would love for all parents to
send pictures via email to jbeerbower@d127.org. Sending the pictures makes it much easier to create the
senior slide show.
If you cannot send your pictures through email, you can mail them to the school. Please have the pictures
labeled when sending them through email or in the mail. Please send no more than 3 photographs to Jeanna
Beerbower at : 400 North Lake Street, Grayslake, IL 60030. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope
so your photos can be returned in a timely manner.
All pictures need to be received by Monday, May 4th. Please send them as soon as possible.
I also need parents to volunteer their time to set-up for the senior breakfast. There will be a meeting on April
14th, 2015 at 5:15 p.m. in the cafeteria annex for parents who are interested in decorating. The meeting will be
no longer than 30 minutes. If interested, please email me at jbeerbower@d127.org. If you are unable to
attend, you can still help set-up either May 14th during evening hours or during the morning of May 15th.

News from the Dean’s Office

Student Release:
Please make arrangements in advance if you need to pick up
your student from school early. Call the attendance line
(847-986-3301) and follow the prompts, or send a note with your son/
daughter to the attendance office before the start of school. When
pick-ups are not pre-arranged, it can be very difficult to locate students
and release them in a timely manner.

Dress Code Reminder:
Any article of clothing that is disruptive because of indecency, such as
short shorts, short skirts, low rise pants (showing undergarments),
halter or tube tops (showing skin around midriff) backless tops,
shirts with only one strap, transparent clothing, pants with holes
strategically placed, or any other manner of dress which could cause a
disruption to our educational atmosphere will not be allowed. Clothing
cannot display items that a student cannot legally purchase and/or
possess. If a student is referred to the Dean’s Office for inappropriate
clothing, parents will be contacted.

Communication with Students:
Parents/guardians can communicate with their children during the
school day in emergency situations. Students will not be disrupted
during the school day to pick up anything at the front desk, except in
the case of emergency. This includes: lunches, books and/or money.
Students will not be excused from class to make or receive a phone call
and students may not send or receive text messages during the school
day.

Cell Phone Usage:
Students are permitted to utilize their cell phone and other technology
devices during non-instructional periods of their school day in an
appropriate manner. Unless specific permission is granted by their
instructor, student’s cell phones and other technology devices are to be
off and away prior to entrance into any instruction class and
throughout the duration of the class period. Using the device to take
photographs, cheat, signal others, or otherwise violate student conduct
rules is prohibited. For all offenses, the device at issue, including all
parts, may be confiscated by a District 127 employee.
Cell phone rules apply from the beginning of the school day to the final
dismissal bell in all District 127 building an any school day. The cell
phone policy applies to after-school and Saturday detentions, as well.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

To protect the educational environment, we will not make any deliveries to your student, specifically
deliveries such as balloons or flowers.

Please be cautious of high school and elementary students walking in the school zone areas. While
driving in these areas, always be considerate of all pedestrians, observe the posted speed limits, and
drive carefully. All community members are valuable to us.

The school building opens at 6:30 a.m. for student arrival. Please plan accordingly when dropping off
your child to school.

It is important to be able to reach a parent/guardian in an emergency or other such situation. When you
have new information, such as a new phone number or new emergency contact, please contact the
school immediately so we can update your file.

News from the Nurse’s Office
There are some changes in vaccination requirements for all incoming 12 th graders for next school year (Fall 2015). In
addition to the existing immunizations requirements for students entering 12 th grade, students will be required to
show proof of recent meningococcal conjugate vaccination (MCV). All twelfth graders will need to show proof of
receiving two doses unless the first dose was administered after 16 years of age. In this case, only one dose after 16
is required. This vaccination will prevent your student from a severe form of bacterial meningitis as well as other
Illnesses cause by this bacterium. Some students may have already received this vaccine since it has been
recommended. In this case, all you would need to do is provide the school verification of receiving the
meningococcal vaccine (MCV). Accepted documentation is listed below:



A letter or note signed by your health care provider identifying the date the MCV was administered.
Printout from your provider’s electronic medical record that indicates the vaccine was administered.
Current Certification of Child Health Examination form, specifying the date MCV was administered.
In addition to your health care provider, many local health departments and pharmacies offer the vaccine. The
Illinois Department of Public Health recommends that parents get their adolescent vaccinated now to avoid a last
minute rush during summer. Students without adequate proof of vaccination will be subjected to exclusions.

All absences need to be reported by 8:00 a.m.
Pre-Arranged Absences:
Any student requesting a pre-arranged absence is required to have a parent/guardian contact the
attendance office to excuse his/her absence.
A junior or senior may be excused two (2) days for either a college visit or for a job interview. These dates must be
pre-arranged as described above. It shall be the joint responsibility of the student and parent/guardian to request
homework prior to leaving and the student’s responsibility to turn it in upon his/her return to school. Because there
is a direct correlation between attendance rate and academic success, GCHS District 127 requires students to
maintain a 90% attendance rate. Medical absences do not count against your son/daughters attendance rate is a
doctor’s note is provided and received in the Attendance Office upon students return to school.

Attendees:
One member of each couple must be a Junior or Senior (early graduates included) currently enrolled at GCHS.
Non-GCHS guests:
Guest information forms are available from the folder on the Dean’s bulletin board outside of their office for students bringing nonGCHS guests. Students may get these any time from March 30 through April 10th. They must be turned in no later than April 14th @
3:00pm to the dean’s office. Students must to attach a copy of their guest’s picture ID to the guest form. Upon approval, a guest
pass will be issued that must be shown in order to purchase tickets. Tickets cannot be purchased without the approved guest
pass.
Rules and regulations:
Prom is a school sponsored event so all school rules and regulations will be enforced. While prom is a dress-up affair, clothing must
be appropriate as per dress guide, as stated in the Student Handbook. Public display of affection should be minimized. Students
are expected to dance in a manner befitting a school dance. Dancing in a manner a chaperone deems improper and/or indecent
will not be permitted, and students are subject to removal without refund.
Students who plan to go to Prom must be in school the entire day from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students who have a doctor’s
appointment (or other family emergency) on that day will need a note from the doctor verifying the appointment. All attendance
issues need to be resolved with the student’s dean.
While Prom offers our students an important social experience, it must not interfere with the overall educational process.
Transportation:
All students must ride a charter bus from GCHS to the Westin North Shore. Buses will be dismissed from the Field House in a
staggered manner, so they will be unloading at different times in order to avoid long lines upon arrival at the Westin. Buses will be
leaving GCHS at 5:45 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:15 p.m. Students will receive bus numbers and buses will be dismissed based on bus
number. We will not wait for late arrivals. Please be on time. Couples will be announced as they load the buses in order for the
chaperones to take attendance. We will have one side of the bleachers open so that parents/guardians can take pictures while
students are announced.

Table Information:
Please designate one person from your group to be your group’s contact person and will be listed as “Head of Table” on the
reservation form. This person is responsible for turning in the Table Reservation Form. The Westin has tables that seat 10 people.
The prom committee will make every attempt to assign tables close to one another for groups larger than 10. If a group is larger
than 10 guests, all Table Reservation Forms must have the same “Head of Table”. The prom committee will make every attempt to
seat groups with fewer than 10 people together.
Ticket Payment:
Payment for tickets is expected in full at registration, with cash or checks made payable to GCHS. The price of prom tickets is
$160.00 per couple or $80.00 per individual. No refunds will be given.

Total Image will be taking pictures in the Field House and NOT at the Westin. Pricing information will be available at ticket sales.

GCHS Art Show
The annual GCHS Student Art Show will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2015 and
Friday, April 24, 2015. The Opening Reception will be Thursday night from 6:00 pm—
9:00 pm in the Big Gym.
In addition to the Art Show, the Central Jazz Band will be hosting a concert, Thursday
April 23, in the Theater from 7:30 pm—9:30 pm

GCHS Out and About
Over 100 students in the Regular US History classes attended a field trip to the Grayslake Heritage Center and
Museum on Tuesday, February 10th.
Students toured the newest exhibits entitled “Over There: Grayslake in the Great War” as well as “The Gathering
Storm: Our Community on the Eve of WWI.”
Students explored the various components of the exhibits including a recreated trench, an audio station featuring
dramatic readings of letters from Grayslake soldiers, and examined what life was like on the home front for
Grayslake residents. Students examined primary and secondary sources that detailed both national and local
events, people, and stories, and were able to view authentic artifacts and items from Grayslake’s history which
provided a valuable and unique perspective into WWI. Additionally, students were able to critically analyze letters
from over 15 Grayslake residents who played a role in WWI, offering a first-hand look into the impact on the
community.
