“Charles Q. Williams Memorial Chapter”
Chapter XXXIV
South Carolina’s Tribute to Special Forces
APRIL 2015
FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Our next meeting will be at 11:30AM on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the Blue Marlin
Restaurant located on the corner of Lincoln and Gervais Streets in downtown
Columbia. Sorry about not being able to schedule our regular meeting in April but our
Chapter officers are committed to some meetings in Charleston over the weekend of
April 24 and 25. We will be attending the 50th Anniversary of Vietnam being held at
Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC. I have already sent a flyer announcement on the
upcoming activities to you in a separate e-mail. Our business there is to discuss the
establishment of a Special Forces and Montagnard display at the Patriots Point facility.
We have both Susan Marlowe and Phyllis Sheffer to thank for making these discussions
possible. For those of you that have not been to Patriots Point lately there is a new
display covering about 4 acres and growing. It is a full-scale model of a Vietnam
Firebase complete with lots of audio/visual effects to include the sound of helicopters, a
50 cal. Machine gun in a tower which has been reworked to make an actual sound of its
firing when the trigger is pulled. Believe me when I tell you it is a first class display.
I also want to make you aware of the upcoming “Gobbler’s Woods” Reunion scheduled
for July 15 – 18, 2015 in Asheboro. It is hosted by Chapter 57 and “Save The
Montagnard People” (STMP). I am attaching a copy of the Agenda and Registration
Form to this newsletter. This event will actually be a mini SFA Convention as a followup to the National Convention being held in Portland Oregon this coming June.
We have received several requests from high schools throughout the State to provide our
Special Forces Medal of Excellence for a deserving JROTC Cadet. If you are interested
in presenting one of these medals and certificate please contact me directly either by email or my phone (mmika2001us@yahoo.com or (843) 422-1425) for more information.
Here are some photos from our last meeting. Hope you enjoy. There are lot’s of great
things going on with Chapter 34.
Meet Susan Marlowe and Phyllis Sheffer
Susan, Rick, Rudy and Phyllis
Yoko Dyke, George Clark, Glenn Dyke Sal Kajon and Tim Campbell
George, Sal Kajon, Susan, Sals Son, Phyllis and A.J. (The Tall One)
We definitely has a surprise at this meeting with the attendance of George and Phyllis
Clark and Sal Kajon and his family. Sal served with the B55 Mobile Strike Force as well
as SOG. He is the highest Montagnard ever decorated in Vietnam holding the award of 2
American Bronze Star Medals. His grandson A.J. pictured above has been accepted to
attend the Citadel beginning this FALL. He will be the first 3rd generation (from the
Vietnam War) to attend a military college. Keep watch on this young man, he will
definitely be going places. His short term goal now is to graduate college, be
commissioned in the United States Military and to serve proudly this great country of
ours. Can’t ask much more than that.
I want to take just a moment to express my personal thanks to Rudy Gresham who has
been working behind the scenes on our behalf with the Patriot’s Point folks as well as
several other things he has done to bring great credit on our Chapter. So the next time
you see him give him a big thanks.
Once again, the next meeting will be held at the Blue Marlin located on the corner of
Lincoln and Gervais Streets in downtown Columbia. Meal selection will be from a
special menu for us. Hope to see you there, so mark your calendars now.
