A Contemplative Retreat
A Contemplative Retreat
May 22 – 23, 2015
at Church of Reconciliation, San Antonio
Featuring “The Writings and Wisdom of Julian of Norwich” led by
Mary Earle,
and Centering Prayer presentations
About….. Centering Prayer
Centering Prayer is a method of prayer in which we consent to rest in God’s presence. It is a
prayer that moves us beyond conversation with Christ to communion with Him. It prepares us to
receive the gift of contemplation.
About….. Julian of Norwich
Many people are familiar with the phrase “All shall be well” but do not know much, if
anything, about Julian of Norwich, the 14th century English mystic who wrote those
words. Thomas Merton declared her to be “without a doubt one of the most wonderful of all
Christian voices,” and former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams says that her writings
“may well be the most important work of Christian reflection in the English language.”
About…. Mary C. Earle
Mary Earle is a writer, spiritual director, retreat leader and Episcopal priest. A
graduate of the Seminary of the Southwest, Mary has served in parishes in the
Diocese of West Texas, has taught at the Seminary of the Southwest, and is the
author of numerous books. In retirement, her ministry is now focused on
practices for the spiritual life in sickness and in health, spiritual direction,
contemplative prayer, and opportunities for ecumenical and interfaith retreats.
She and her husband, Doug, live in San Antonio with their three Border Collies
and a cat.
7:00 – 9:00 p.m. , Friday, May 22
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 23
The retreat begins on Friday evening with a time of contemplative worship, led by Mary Earle,
including periods of meditative silence. Following the contemplative worship, Mary will present
her first talk on Julian of Norwich.
Saturday morning begins with centering prayer workshops led by COSA members, including time
for centering. This will be followed by Mary Earle’s second talk on Julian of Norwich.
After a break for lunch, there will be a time for contemplative prayer and
meditation on your own, including centering prayer, walking the labyrinth,
and/or journaling. You may enjoy walking the pathway that encircles the
church campus or sitting in the serenity of the courtyard or the sanctuary.
Following our contemplative time, Mary will present her final talk on Julian of Norwich. The
retreat will then close with a group labyrinth walk.
Participation limited to 75
