City of Orlando Police Department HQ Solicitation for Artists for Public Sculpture MISSION: See Art Orlando’s mission is to enhance the aesthetic experience and cultural image of Downtown Orlando through major Public Sculptures. The installation of iconic works of art throughout the City brings National and International attention to Orlando and adds to the economic viability of the community. The purpose of this Call to Artists is to procure an artist to design a contemporary sculpture to recognize the service of Orlando Police Officers to their community. The artwork will focus on the pride and commitment of Orlando’s officers and will convey a message of honor, appreciation and community service. The sculpture will also provide an appropriate site for ceremonial activities at the City of Orlando Police Department. Artist Design Budget - $100,000. ELIGIBILITY: See Art Orlando requests a design that is contemporary in style. This project is open to local, national and international professional sculptors that specialize in the design, construction and installation of large-scale outdoor sculpture. The artist must have a proven track record meeting budget and time schedule. Consideration will only be given to professional sculptors whose work has been or is currently on display in a public setting. The sculpture should be created of material appropriate to an outdoor environment, must be of suitable construction that will last in perpetuity with minimal maintenance and be appropriate for public viewing. Orlando, Florida has a sub-tropical climate and is hot and humid with intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. Materials with problems of rust and fading should be avoided. Resistance to high-speed, hurricane force winds is important. The sculpture must meet applicable building codes. This local, national and international call for artists will reflect the most current contemporary art being created locally and around the world. The sculpture should reflect the vision and creative environment of the Orlando community and its vibrant culture. INSTALLATION SITE: Orlando Police Department Headquarters: SE corner of the intersection of Orange Blossom Trail and South Street, Orlando, Florida. The See Art Orlando Board will evaluate each artists work based on submission materials and seek more detailed proposals if needed. Specific criteria includes: the artists professional qualifications and proven ability to undertake projects of a similar scope and artistic merit as evidenced by the submitted materials. In some instances, selection may require additional approval of corporate and/or local government representatives. Finalists for this project will be chosen on the proposed sculpture and on the strength of previous work as evidenced by the visual support materials and previous public art experience. Artist will provide explanation of how work will be displayed. Artist will take in consideration that work is appropriate for active pedestrian environments. Artist will provide assistance as needed with installation at permanent site. Artist will attend unveiling of project and participate in publicity and media promotions. Artist shall include all travel and accommodations in the design budget. See Art Orlando will not accept shipments on behalf of the artist. All artwork will be delivered by the artist or the artist’s agent. Artist’s participation in the entry process constitutes a full understanding and acceptance of the conditions set forth above.
