Newsletter-May-4-2015 - Elimbah State School
Elimbah News & Views Monday 4 May 2015 Volume 2, Issue 3 It is with great sadness that we write this newsletter entry today. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that one of our prep students, Tyler McDonald, his mother, Tamra, and grandfather, Anthony (Tony) died as a result of the unexpected traumatic weather events. Tyler had become a friend to his prep classmates and will be sorely ELIMBAH STATE SCHOOL missed. We have all been affected by the grief of this family’s Ph: 5432 1333 passing. On behalf of our school, we extend our sincerest email: the.principal@elimbahss.eq.edu.au condolences to Tyler’s family at this sad time. Friday’s weather events were extreme and unprecedented and significantly impacted on our school and the Elimbah community. At about 1:00pm on Friday our school became aware of the possibility of increased rain and wind with many parents contacting school to make enquiries and arrangements for their children. All our school phone lines were in constant use and messages were delivered to classrooms as fast as was humanly possible. Thank you to those parents who were able to get to school to collect their children. Some school bus services were cancelled around 2:45pm and some bus services were merged, with one bus leaving a few minutes early to ensure it could still cover the route. The school was able to provide a safe environment for students, parents, staff and other community members unable to get home due to flash flooding. Some of our children stayed at school for many hours with the last children collected by their parents around 10:30pm. A number of staff stayed with the children with some staff staying all night. Office staff, Mrs Kerrie Howden and Mrs Julia Herron, and School’s Officer, Mr Paul Howden, stayed all night and organised food and bedding for students, staff and community members who could not reach their homes. These three dedicated and caring staff were still working up until lunchtime on Saturday so that the school would be ready for Monday. Our heartfelt thanks for a great job - over and beyond the call of duty. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our community members for their generous offers of support with bedding, etc on Friday. All teachers spent some time today giving students the opportunity to talk about their experiences on Friday. There will be continued support offered to students, staff and parents as we try to come to terms with these tragic events. Thank you to everyone for their messages of support and condolences. It truly reflects the amazing community that Elimbah is. Take care. Little did I know that I would be sitting here today rewriting it. Two days normally does not seem like a long time, but when you experience shock, sadness and grief, time seems to go so slowly. The phrase I have heard numerous times is 'it just happened so fast'. Yes the tragic event of losing the lives of loved ones has happened so fast that we are left in shock, still trying to process what actually has taken place. As we come to understand parts of this tragedy, this deep pain -grief- takes hold of us and takes up residency in the core of our being. We all experience it in different ways and our children will experience and express it uniquely also. When children come to me with grief, I try to reassure them that it is important to not keep that 'yucky' feeling locked up in their tummies but to release it and that crying is totally acceptable and normal. As adults we try to be strong for those around us but we too need to grieve. We need to take time out for ourselves to express our feelings and release our grief. We all have our own story to tell and it is important that we do so. So often we wish to go back, erase everything that has happened but unfortunately time cannot be reversed, we cannot go back and undo what has hurt us so badly. Amongst all the grief and pain what do we have left? What we have left are great memories of beautiful people, we have a wonderful community who will walk with us, support us, embrace us and grieve with us. As your chappy it is my privilege to celebrate with you all in your highest highs and walk with you through your lowest lows. The coming days, weeks and months will be hard for us all and I am with you on your journey, my door is always open. With you on the journey... VALUED VOLUNTEERS FIONA, TAROOLA, DALLAS & CRISTELLE The Brekkie Club Team P & C NEWS P&C Monthly Meeting 20 May 2015 at 6.30pm - (please note winter start time) New Faces & Ideas always Welcome! We still need a volunteer (or two) for our Fundraising Coordinators position. This role can be job shared between two people. If we do not get a Fundraising Coordinator, events like our Fathers Day stall, our Carols on the Oval, School Discos etc WILL NOT go ahead!! And the less fundraising we do throughout the year, the less money is available for resources for your children. Did you know that the great Undercover Area where your children sit for Parade and Lunches was funded by your P & C? Projects to benefit your children don’t happen without your help. Please contact Taroola if you would like some more information on what the role entails. When we put the call out for help needed, please do not think that someone else has ‘got’ it. Any little thing that you can help out with, even if it is just half an hour of your time, is greatly appreciated. Without our wonderful volunteers and our fundraising, projects like the Undercover Area and the Learning Terraces would not be achievable. Our children wouldn’t have as many books in the library or as much sporting, technological and musical equipment to play with. We wouldn’t have a great, healthy, 5 day a week Tuckerbox or a Uniform Shop for your one stop uniform shopping. So, please, make the conscious decision next time help is needed to put your name forward. It doesn’t take much to achieve great things! A huge thank you to all who volunteer now. Your hearts make a huge difference in our school! Please forward your feed back to us, we can’t fix it if we don’t know it needs attentionpandc@elimbahss.eq.edu.au Have a great week!
