we are reminded of our proud resilient ANZAC Spirit and the unwavering mateship forged through that
shared adversity of battle and ,of course, the frailty

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was the Turkish army officer
set with the task of repelling the ANZAC’s, He was
not only a stolid leader of men in battle he was a reformist statesman, and the first President of Turkey.
He is credited with being the founder of the Republic
of Turkey.
Gallipoli - Memorial at Anzac Cove Quote by
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
“Those heroes that shed their blood
and lost their lives…
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.
Therefore rest in peace.
There is no difference between the Johnnies
and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side
here in this country of ours…
You, the mothers,
who sent their sons from faraway countries
wipe away your tears;
your sons are now lying in our bosom
and are in peace.
After having lost their lives on this land they have
become our sons as well.”
Atatürk 1934
One can only be touched By these words from
Mustafa, although we were not victors, understanding the man that bettered us had a passion and
humility few leaders today could equal does bring
some respect to that enemy.

ANZAC Landing
At around 4.30 am on Sunday 25 April 1915, the first soldiers of
the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed
near Ari Burnu on the Gallipoli Peninsula. On the same morning,
soldiers from Britain, France and their colonies launched assaults at nearby Cape Helles and Kum Kale.
The Spirit
The Allies wanted to destroy the forts overlooking the Dardanelles to allow a fleet to
enter the Sea of Marmara and bombard the
Ottoman capital, Constantinople. They hoped
Turkey would surrender, easing pressure on
Russia and depriving Germany of an ally.
Men of the 3rd Australian Brigade were the
first Anzac troops ashore. Approaching the
coast on board Royal Navy warships, they
were woken around 1 am, fed and assembled. The first wave boarded thirty-six rowing
boats and were towed towards the beach until they were close enough to row to shore.
Mostly landing at a place that became known
as Anzac ove, the Australian troops came under fire before they had stepped ashore.
“We thought that our landing was to be
effected quite unopposed, but when our
boats were within about 30 yards of the
beach a rifle was fired from the hill in front
of us above the beach right in front of
where we were heading for. Almost immediately heavy rifle and machine gun fire
was opened up on us. We had to row for
another 15 yards or so before we reached
water shallow enough to get out of the
boats. “
- 10 Battalion War Diary 25/4/15, War
Office Papers, WO 95/4344,
Under increasingly heavy Turkish machine
gun and rifle fire, the ANZAC’s raced inland
into a warren of steep ground, razorback
ridges and scrub-filled gullies that caused formations to either bunch together or separate
into small groups.
The following waves of ANZAC’s came ashore as Turkish shells began bursting over the landing area. Meanwhile, Turkish troops were
responding to the Anzac landing in force. The battle ebbed and flowed,
with the ANZAC’s taking, losing, and then retaking ground in the face
of Turkish counter-attacks. In some places the ANZAC’s were forced
off key locations, such as the hill known as Baby 700, which they
would not retake during the entire campaign.
By the end of that first day, the Turks threatened to force the ANZAC’s into the sea. The situation was so precarious that the Anzac
commanders considered immediate evacuation. However, they were
ordered to dig in by their superior, General Sir Ian Hamilton.
Historian estimate some 2000 Australians were killed or wounded
on 25 April, but there are no precise casualty figures for that day –
the fighting was too confused and casualties were widely dispersed
across the battlefield, the beach and on board hospital ships.
The ANZAC’s evacuated in December 1915, 8700 Australians
and 2700 New Zealanders had
been killed. Gallipoli campaign
cost the lives of around 44,000 Allied and 86,000 Turkish soldiers.

The 2015 ANZAC Day Central

Semaphore Cheer Ups
(L-Corp) Colin Bayly
Before any of our Soldiers had set foot on the shores of Gallipoli we had
all ready lost one of Semaphore’s Own.
Colin Bayly from the South Esplanade, Semaphore was in Liverpool,
England on the outbreak of war and joined
the 10th (Scottish) Battalion of The King’s
(Liverpool Regiment). On the day of Britain’s declaration of war against the Central
Powers, 4 August 1914, the 1st/10th (Scottish) Battalion mobilised and deployed to
Scotland to man the defences on the River
Forth.
They then embarked at Southampton on
1 November 1914 aboard the SS Maidan,
bound for Europe. Bayly was killed instantly
by a high explosive shell at St Eloi in Flanders on 16 April 1915, aged 28. He was
buried in a regimental burial ground established by the Liverpool Scottish, which is
today Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3 War
Cemetery at Ieper (‘Ypres’) in West-Vlaanderen (West Flanders), Belgium.
- Major (retired) Paul A Rosenzweig MA JP
The Semaphore Cheer Ups were without a doubt the Hardest Working Group of
Lady’s in SA if not Australia during WW1.
With out break for over 5 Years they Provided Food, Comfort and Entertainment
to all the Troops In or Out of Adelaide
from their Hut at Outer Harbor. Rain Hail
or Shine they Managed to Meet every
Transport Ship (over 220) and when there
were no ships in they would be Volunteering at the Adelaide Cheer Up Hut. On one
Button Day alone they Raised over 3000
Pounds. The Cheer Up Huts were the
for-runners to the RSL’s
William Thomas Adams
Private (Pte) William Thomas Adams, 7th Battalion, of Port Adelaide,
SA. With three years service in the senior cadets in Broken Hill, and
employed as an engineer before enlisting in August 1914, Pte Adams
left Australia in October 1914.
Landing at Gallipoli as part of the second wave attack on 25 April
1915, Pte Adams was officially listed as killed in action sometime between the 25th April and 2 May 1915.
Pte William Adams was killed three days short of his 21st birthday,
and is buried at Lone Pine Cemetery.
On the 5th of August 2014 Service Member Paul Viner with his family and the rest of the tour group Commemorated Pte William Adams
at Lone Pine Cemetery and on behalf of the Semaphore Port Adelaide RSL he Placed a Plaque on the grave of this Local ANZAC.
as they land on the morning of 25 April
while members of the 7th Battalion
advance up a gully on the left.
The poster calls on the audience to
imagine the physical challenge as well
as the danger from bullets and shells
on that first day, and prompts reflection on the individual story of each
soldier as they step ashore. Their experiences became part of the broader
ANZAC story.
